Deb Omnivorous Reader | 1929 comments One of my Readathon books was by an Australian author of YA who was new to me, pretty good writer. Set in America rather than Aus, I would recommend it to readers who like a bit of YA.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments Thanks to Carolyn's review of Broken Man on a Halifax Pier, and to Wollongong City Libraries for ordering it in, I got to read this wonderful book by Canadian author, Lesley Choyce. It's insightful, moving and darkly funny, but it did cause me to burst into tears on the second last page. I'll certainly be looking for more by this author.

Thanks to Carolyn for suggesting this one, just finished and it was really interesting to read it in the current environment and I’m glad I did. Not a review as such, just my thoughts

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments A cantankerous old lady, a newly discovered grandson and a big flock of penguins: Away with the Penguins by Hazel Prior is a delightful, feel-good read, even if it does require some suspension of disbelief for the Antarctic bits.

Good you are whittling down your TBR, Alex. Mine only ever seems to grow. As fast as I read or delete one, two more crop up to take its place.

It takes discipline - not my strongest attribute, and this year I am making notes of reviews I like, the title, author & reviewer, to add to my TBR list, but sticking to the plan of 2:1 existing/new books.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments I'm not sure whether to call One Spring In Paris: A classic historical love story a historical romance when it was written in the year the story is set, 1954. Certainly there's not a hint of sex: the furthest the couple go is kissing and holding hands. It was written by a lady called Euphrasia Emmeline Cox, but she used a pseudonym Lewis Cox, maybe to get it published. The female lead seems easily bedazzled by beautiful dresses and flattery; the male lead has a touch of Fitzwilliam Darcy, tempering his compliments with cold qualifiers.
