Nancy, my copy of The Burning Court is a lurid 1973 $.40 Dell masterpiece showcasing the back of a topless woman with a see-through slip dancing at the open casket containing a man.

The First Wave
by james R. BennBilly Boyle #2, OK to read as a stand-alone. Entertaining historical mystery taking place during the Allied invasion of North Africa in 1942. Billy is a young ex-cop on Ike Eisenhower's staff investigating murder, theft and racketeering. Enjoyable read. I liked it very much, 4 stars.

Mardi Gras Murder
by Ellen ByronIn this fourth book in the 'Cajun Country Mystery' series, amateur sleuth Maggie Crozat helps investigate two murders and judges a hometown pageant. The book can be read as a standalone.
Good story with a festive Mardi Gras atmosphere. 3.5 stars

I always enjoy the adventures of Aussie author Sulari Gentill's wealthy artist Rowland Sinclair and his colourful friends in 1930s Australia. In A Dangerous Language, they attempt to warn the government about what the Nazis are really up to. Loved it!

The Right Side of the Line by Susan Wilkins is a timely novella-length addition to her Detective Megan Thomas series, taking place in England during Covid. How times change!

I'll be reading that one as well, so I won't look at your review until afterward. Did you enjoy it?

The Best of Friends by Lucinda Berry
Magpie Murders by Anthony HorowitzThis isn't a thriller, but it is a lovely warm hearted read about three generations of a family. There are secrets, a little mystery, some romance, an unrequited attraction, some dodgy artwork, an epiphany or two, and a vacuum cleaner named Henry.

I've been disappointed in a few of the authors that for years I counted upon for an enjoyable reading experience. Jonathan Kellerman is one of these writers. I've been disappointed in his recent offerings.
Finished A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. Reading something other than genre fiction for the first time in a long time. This was moving but manipulative. Rating - 3/5

Are you enjoying it, Michael? I have had that one on the shelf forever, along with Slade House. I really need to dust them off and actually read them.

My real-world book group read his Britt-Marie Was Here. It was okay. I'm just not a big fan of his novels.

I did.
I'm currently reading this:
Pietr the Latvian
It's my first Maigret, recommended to me by a member of the group.
It's sensational!
Simenon makes every word count, describes events cleverly and creates a real sense of urgency. It's great for excitement but not for blood pressure.
Full review once I've completed it.

Now that you've started the series, you'll want to read them all. Highly addictive.

I finished An Anonymous Girl and loved it!The characters really hooked me, and the plot was well-paced and tight. Not exactly believable if you've worked in the field lol, but still a fun read.
I've been involved in a lot of challenges, both online and IRL, and I haven't gotten to my share of mystery and suspense. :( Fortunately, I was able to read this for a prompt, and rather than use a number generator, I had my black cat who loves Tarot cards to draw a 3 digit number for my Goodreads shelf.
Think I'll have him draw all my reads ~ he did well!
Now I'm starting Behind Her Eyes. I'm enjoying it overall, but I'm at 40%, and it's getting a wee bit repetitive. I hope it picks up!

Thanks for letting me know. I might set this aside for another book I've had on hold.

I just read this one in 2020. Thought it was very good & Maigret seemed so authentic.

I’ve been on a break from maigret so I could catch up with other books, but I’ll be back to them sooner rather than later. Hahahahaha! 🕵🏽♂️
Kingdom of the Blind by Louise Penny took me back to Three Pines, the remote, snowy village in Quebec which seems to have more than its share of murderous events! (No wonder I love it.)
4.5★ Link to my Kingdom of the Blind review

I was going to send you a message to thank you for recommending Maigret, Bruce, so I'll thank you now instead.
You certainly know how to pick a good detective book.
I can't find the thread where the chap said that Chandler was easily the best detective writer. Surely Simenon has to be right up there with the very best?

Maigret reminds me of a big, grumpy bear. Although he's a very lovable bear, you wouldn't want to poke him.

Elephants Can Remember
by Agatha ChristieHercule Poirot #37, OK to read as a stand-alone. More Ariadne Oliver than Poirot. Mrs. Oliver and Poirot look into a tragedy which occurred many years ago. I like the Poirot books very much but I had this one figured out from the get-go. Still, very well done, 4 stars.
Now starting THE SHALLOWS by Matt Goldman, the third book in his ongoing series featuring Minnesota private eye Nils Shapiro. Nominated for the Shamus Award as the Best P.I. Novel of the Year.
The Book of Two Ways by Jodi Picoult.
I'm still speechless. Here is my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I just finished listening to Winter Counts
