Billy Boyle #2, OK to read as a stand-alone. Entertaining historical mystery taking place during the Allied invasion of North Africa in 1942. Billy is a young ex-cop on Ike Eisenhower's staff investigating murder, theft and racketeering. Enjoyable read. I liked it very much, 4 stars.

In this fourth book in the 'Cajun Country Mystery' series, amateur sleuth Maggie Crozat helps investigate two murders and judges a hometown pageant. The book can be read as a standalone.

Good story with a festive Mardi Gras atmosphere. 3.5 stars

Magpie Murders (Susan Ryeland, #1) by Anthony Horowitz Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz

This isn't a thriller, but it is a lovely warm hearted read about three generations of a family. There are secrets, a little mystery, some romance, an unrequited attraction, some dodgy artwork, an epiphany or two, and a vacuum cleaner named Henry. I've been disappointed in a few of the authors that for years I counted upon for an enjoyable reading experience. Jonathan Kellerman is one of these writers. I've been disappointed in his recent offerings.

I'm currently reading this:

Pietr the Latvian

It's my first Maigret, recommended to me by a member of the group.

It's sensational!

Simenon makes every word count, describes events cleverly and creates a real sense of urgency. It's great for excitement but not for blood pressure.

Full review once I've completed it.

Lilith (lilithp) | 368 comments I finished An Anonymous Girl and loved it!
The characters really hooked me, and the plot was well-paced and tight. Not exactly believable if you've worked in the field lol, but still a fun read.

I've been involved in a lot of challenges, both online and IRL, and I haven't gotten to my share of mystery and suspense. :( Fortunately, I was able to read this for a prompt, and rather than use a number generator, I had my black cat who loves Tarot cards to draw a 3 digit number for my Goodreads shelf.

Think I'll have him draw all my reads ~ he did well!

I was going to send you a message to thank you for recommending Maigret, Bruce, so I'll thank you now instead.

You certainly know how to pick a good detective book.

I can't find the thread where the chap said that Chandler was easily the best detective writer. Surely Simenon has to be right up there with the very best?
