Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9973 comments About Face: A Commissario Guido Brunetti Mystery About Face (Commissario Brunetti, #18) by Donna Leon by Donna Leon

Commissario Guido Brunetti has several investigations in this case, related to the Camorra (Italian mafia) making huge profits from Italy's trash problems.

Plot's a bit complicated but it's always great to visit with Brunetti. 3 stars

still reading White Jazz by James Ellroy. I'm hoping to finish by tomorrow. This one's a bit more challenging than the others because it's done only from a first-person pov, and because he's gone pretty dynamite staccato on the language in this novel.

Araych | 676 comments The Ice Harvest The Ice Harvest (The Ice Harvest #1) by Scott Phillips by Scott Phillips

Dynamite fast-paced mystery with scenes of hilarious dark humor. I saw the movie before I read the book and I think this is one of the few instances where the movie is better than the book. 4 stars if you haven't seen the movie, 3 if you have.

I've finished White Jazz which means I've also finished the LA Quartet. Honestly, these four books taken together are some of the very best examples of crime literature I've ever read. Jeez.

Anyone thinking of reading these would be wise to at least start with The Big Nowhere and read your way through the other two in order. I think you could feasibly not start with The Black Dahlia and be okay, but then you'd miss one of the best of the four books.

Araych | 676 comments Last Looks Last Looks (Charlie Waldo #1) by Howard Michael Gould by Howard Michael Gould

Dynamite debut novel from Gould, featuring ex-LAPD cop Charlie Waldo, living as a hermit after a case of his went terribly wrong. Well, he gets pulled back into the movie business and it's a real hoot. Sort of like Carl Hiaasen in Hollywood rather than Miami. I surely hope this is the first of many. 4 stars, highly recommended.

This comic novel is about the greedy 1% who suck in money using financial shenanigans most people don't understand. Giles Goodenough gets caught up in the system with dire consequences. (Not a spoiler. Giles wakes from a coma at the beginning of the book.)

Very funny story. 4 stars

So I finished The Mystery of Henri Pick, and it was lighter fare for me than normal, but there was indeed a mystery to be had although the novel was not truly what I'd consider crime fiction. It did have a great twist though that was somewhat of a gamechanger in my reading of the book.

Once again I have no bloody clue as to what to read next in the realm of mystery/crime. Hopefully one book on my overloaded shelves will call out to me.
