In this fifth book in the 'Cajun Country' cozy mystery series, amateur sleuth Maggie Crozat is suspected of murder. The book can be read as a standalone.

Charming and fun cozy mystery. 4 stars

Araych | 676 comments Watch Your Back Watch Your Back! (Dortmunder, #13) by Donald E. Westlake by Donald Westlake

John Dortmunder #13, OK to read as a stand-alone, but some history of the characters would be helpful.
So in this one there's a rich guy hiding out from his ex-wives and their process servers in Club Med, which means his amazing penthouse full of paintings and jewelry and other very valuable stuff is sitting vacant. But the O J Bar has been taken over by some hard-core Mafia crooks who are turning it into a bust-out joint so there's nowhere for the gang to meet.
Westlake is like a guy juggling chain saws. All these plot lines just buzz along and while all that's going on hilarity ensues.
Absolutely wonderful book, one of Westlake's best. 5 stars.

I am slowly, but surely, re-reading this series. I love Dortmunder and the gang.

When an 11=year-old boy hears that 2 seconds will be added to the clock because of leap year, he becomes agitated. This leads to actions that have long term consequences.

Interesting story. 4 stars

PattyMacDotComma | 920 comments I've enjoyed all the Graham Brack novels I've read so far, and the second in the Master Mercurius historical mystery series is another winner. Untrue till Death takes place in the Netherlands in the 17th century, full of murder and intrigue with the author's trademark humour.
Untrue till Death by Graham Brack 4.5★ Link to my Untrue Till Death review

I've finished Simenon's The Grand Banks Café (1931), and had I not already been a huge fan of the author before, this book would have made me one.

One more Simenon, The Dancer at the Gai-Moulin, before getting back to Ellroy.

Bruce | 3119 comments Nancy, hahahaha! I finished the Grand Banks Cafe last week, and have been listing to the Gai Moulin as well. I’m guessing you’re reading the maigret novels chronologically, as well.

message 2079: by Bruce (new)

Bruce | 3119 comments I’ve noticed with the last few Simenon books, that he gets creative with plots and concepts, while still being realistic. In the Dancer at the Gai Moulin, Maigret doesn’t show up until more than halfway through, and it’s even more different when he does. Agatha Christie did a similar thing, once with a Poirot novel, and once with a Marple novel.

Chronologically, yes, but The Dancer at the Gai-Moulin will be the last Maigret until I'm finished with L.A. Confidential Did you enjoy Grand Banks? I did.

I took today off (dinner in slow cooker even!) so that I could finish The Dancer at the Gai-Moulin. Booyah! Maigret seriously outdoes himself here. I actually enjoyed this more than I did The Grand Banks Café.

I'll get back to reading Simenon's The Two-Penny Bar and The Shadow Puppet after I finish L.A. Confidential.

'The Palace of the Stars' by Australian author Karina McRoberts is the first book in a planned trilogy best characterized as historical fiction mixed with character studies. As advertised, the story has elements of "love, magic, and mystery."

Interesting story. 3.5 stars

Bruce | 3119 comments Nancy, I did enjoy the Grand Banks. One of the better ones, although I haven’t noticed much of a difference in quality between the Maigret books so far. They’re all very consistent, which is all the more impressive considering how much he wrote in one year. Honestly, I can’t think of any other classic mystery writer who was that consistent.
