In this domestic drama, long-married spouses are harboring big secrets on the day of the wife's long planned 40th birthday bash.

Intriguing premise. 3 stars

I just took my copy of Black Dahlia off the shelf today, but I won't get to it until Monday. I'm reading Hurricane Season by Fernanda Melchor and it is taking up my reading time at the moment.

I wanted to get a head start because it looks like August will be a busy month for group reads - I'm also trying to fit in Swag by Elmore Leonard, Dreamsnake by Vonda N. McIntyre, and probably The Bad Seed by William March. And you know I don't like to hurry. :-(

Black Dahlia is good so far, but Ellroy's style hasn't fully matured at this point. Apparently it was his editor's insistence that he shorten 100 pages of L.A. Confidential that caused him to edit out every single word that he considered "unnecessary," which led to his unique prose. Black Dahlia is still well written, it just doesn't quite feel like the Ellroy that I was expecting.

I actually decided to start Black Dahlia last night instead of waiting. I've already read it but it's always good to reconnect. You won't need to wait until LA Confidential to see Ellroy hit his stride -- he's all there The Big Nowhere for sure.

Re The Bad Seed -- that's a creepy book. My irl book group read it a couple of years back.

As a result of finishing this collection, I have also read all the stories in these two Beaumont collections as was able to rate and review them as well - both are out of print but well worth picking up if you should happen to find them second-hand:

Dr. Siri #11, not recommended as a stand-alone. Laos, 1979. Dr. Siri and the rest of his jolly crew investigate 3 murders in Laos and also Thailand. I'm a big fan of the Dr. Siri series but I found this story extremely complex and confusing. Maybe I should have been taking notes. 3 stars.

Yeah feels a bit different from the machine gun prose I usually equate with Ellroy. This was the first Ellroy book I read, enjoyed it a lot back then. Still liking it this time around but seems to be missing a gear. Though I am going slow and it only gets better.

I'm enjoying it a lot right now, I just was surprised at the style being different from what I expected. The boxing match is a terrific way to start it off - it really lends an authentic feel to the time period and also throws back to the great boxing stories of the pulp era.

Nancy Oakes (quinnsmom) | 10110 comments Mod
Still working on Hurricane Season, but it's so intense I had to take a break for a while. I hope to finish it today but who knows? A while back Stark House sent me a two-books-in-one called Footsteps in the Night / Beat Back the Tide by Dolores Hitchens. Both are from the 1960s, and I'm two pages shy of finishing Footsteps in the Night. It's one of those books where you're pretty sure you know whodunit as you're reading, but just a couple of pages to the end, I'm not sure anymore. I like when that happens.

Also continuing on with The Black Dahlia by James Ellroy for August's group discussion.

It was a brave decision on Ellroy's part to not actually start the main case till one fourth of the way in. But it works, adds a lot in terms of both atmosphere and characterization.

Araych | 677 comments The Old Man The Old Man by Thomas Perry by Thomas Perry

More an adventure than a mystery. I like Perry's style and I've read several of this books. I liked the hero and his adventures but I had a couple of issues with the book, which pop up later in the story. 1st, the revealed backstory of his girlfriend is absurd and 2nd, the coincidence of him meeting a woman with this history out of the millions of women in the US is ridiculous. Still recommended, though. Deduct 1 star, down to 4.
