The Florida Board on Judicial Conduct tries to take down a corrupt judge who's in cahoots with the Florida Mafia.
Lots of legal shenanigans and danger. 3 stars

I was pleasantly surprised by this entry in the Robert Langdon series.
and I started reading:

The Friends of Eddie Coyle by George V. Higgins

Well, he's 87 so who knows? I remember reading at some point that he'd written another novel, the name escaping me for the moment."
I think it was The Passenger but the release was canceled so I don't know if it was ever finished or not. I have the feeling that when CM eventually passes away he will leave a whole bunch of unpublished stuff behind that will be drip-fed to the fans for years to come.

Compelling, emotional, true -

Finished #10 in the Calladine & Bayliss series

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I've finished a couple of books -- An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser (which, if you discount Dreiser's writing style is pretty good), and Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, which, going against the current tide of gushing reviews, I didn't particularly care for. For one thing, you can figure out what's going to happen early on, and for another, it was more straight-up horrorish than I like.
Rereading Helter Skelter: The True Story of the Manson Murders after reading O'Neill's Chaos: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties, and I'm about to start The Red Right Hand by Joel Townsley Rogers (1945).

Amateur sleuth Kate Davidson is a yoga teacher, doula, and 'mom' to a digestively challenged German Shepherd named Bella. Kate also has a penchant for stumbling across dead bodies.
Amusing cozy. 3 stars

In this 4th book in the 'Ryan DeMarco Mystery' series, the former Pennsylvania State Trooper assists the police in the investigation of a particularly brutal crime.
Not the best book in the series, but worth reading for fans. 2.5 stars

Richard Jury #22, OK to read as stand-alone. Someone is killing young women working as escorts in London and Inspector Jury is on the case. I am a big fan of the Jury series but this entry has several chapters narrated by either a dog or a cat -- absurd! I know it's supposed to be cute but we're trying to figure out murders and we're interrupted by silliness. A generous 2.5 stars.

Oh! I can't stand when that happens! That or a dead person narrating how they came to be in this state (unless it's a ghost story).

You are the second person to tell me that. I will keep a lookout for it.

Perchance to Dream by Charles Beaumont

The Howling Man by Charles Beaumont

And I started reading another Beaumont collection (there is a lot of overlap between his collections, so I have already read many of the stories):

The Hunger: And Other Stories by Charles Beaumont
Most of these stories are not crime or mystery stories; they are more likely to fall under the categories of "science fiction," "horror," or the catchall "weird." But those who enjoy the pulp magazine stories of the post-WWII era will feel right at home here.

My first Vera Stanhope but definitely plan to read them all now.

Michael Kelly #1. Debut P. I. mystery demonstrates an easy breezy style for a hard core murder mystery. I liked it a lot and will read the rest of the Kelly series. 4 stars.
Still reading Helter Skelter and probably will be for a while. My husband just returned from being away for four days, so I can start reading it at night again. It's so intense that every little noise the house made was seriously amplified upstairs, and I would find myself sitting up and listening to every sound. Thi's is a reread, so you'd think it wouldn't get to me like this.

Caleb Rush, a k a Crush, is the coolest dude in L A. Cool job, cool car, etc etc. The first half of this adventure is kind of dumb but fun. Second half is real dumb.

Two very different five star reads in two days!
The very emotional

The most exciting and fun read of the year

This novel harks back to the very early days of detective fiction, when crimes were usually solved by observation and deduction rather than forensics. The premise: a mathematician writes detective stories that illustrate the mathematical permutations of the genre.
Original idea. 3 stars
