Araych | 677 comments The Body on the Beach The Body on the Beach (Fethering, #1) by Simon Brett by Simon Brett

Fethering #1, in which we are introduced to Carole, Jude, and the rest of the inhabitants of the English village of Fethering. Carole finds a body on the beach, which disappears, and meets Jude. They work the case without the cops. This is a cozy, except it's not dull and Brett puts in some nice snarky humor. I liked it.

I've read the first two or three and enjoyed. They are quirky and interesting. I like his Charles Paris series as well.

This is one of my favourite Stephen King books. Enjoy!!

November Road by Lou Berney. Starts really strong , has a strong sense of place but the ending is too sentimental for my liking. Rating - 3/5

I sure wish McCarthy would write more. It's been 14 years since The Road.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9974 comments The Living Dead The Living Dead by George A. Romero by George A. Romero and Daniel Kraus

This 650+ page 'zombie' book is far from a quickie blood and guts horror tome that could be adapted into a two-hour movie. Rather the story, a sobering depiction of 15 years of a zombie apocalypse, would require a mini-series to do it justice.

Very good story. 4 stars

Well, he's 87 so who knows? I remember reading at some point that he'd written another novel, the name escaping me for the moment.

I've finished reading Nostromo, by Conrad and I'm currently rereading An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser. I've been going through my shelves and had forgotten I had these books -- it's like visiting with long lost friends.

Araych | 677 comments The Big Four The Big Four (Hercule Poirot, #5) by Agatha Christie by Agatha Christie

Hercule Poirot #5, OK to read as stand-alone. Hercule tracks an evil cabal bent upon world domination. Not Aggie's best, reads like a series of short stories stuck together. Just OK.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9974 comments A Better Man A Better Man (Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, #15) by Louise Penny

In this 15th book in the 'Chief Inspector Armand Gamache' series, the detective is once again set to become Head of Homicide of the Sûreté du Québec.....and his first new case is a missing pregnant woman.

Largely a legal procedural. 3 stars

In this 21st book in the 'Inspector Wexford' series, the detective investigates two old murders that have just come to light. The book can be read as a standalone.

Interesting characters in this average mystery. 3 stars

Over halfway through An American Tragedy, and I dug out my copy of Adirondack Tragedy: The Gillette Murder Case of 1906 to reread as well. It's the true-crime story that inspired Dreiser's book. The main character in American Tragedy is beyond odious.

Araych | 677 comments Dangerous Minds Dangerous Minds (Knight and Moon, #2) by Janet Evanovich by Janet Evanovich

Knight & Moon #2, recommend reading #1 first. Emerson and Riley save the world. I'm a fan of Evanovich's Plum series but this was just too slow and far-fetched for me. I know it's supposed to be light and fun but it just didn't grab me at all. Not recommended.

Araych | 677 comments Now You See Them Now You See Them (Stephens & Mephisto Mystery, #5) by Elly Griffiths by Elly Griffiths

Stephens & Mephisto #5, possible to read as stand-alone but reading the series in order is recommended. Time has jumped forward 11 years and it is now 1964 in Brighton, England, and our cast is older but perhaps not so much wiser. And someone is kidnapping girls. This is an amazing series and is highly recommended. 5 stars.

Araych | 677 comments Killer Thriller Killer Thriller (Ian Ludlow Thrillers #2) by Lee Goldberg by Lee Goldberg

Ian Ludlow #2, OK to read as stand-alone. Author dreams up doomsday scenario and it comes true. Cute idea written as a cartoon. Completely over the top, supposed to be amusing -- maybe I just wasn't in the right mood. I quit half way through.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9974 comments A Darker Domain A Darker Domain (Inspector Karen Pirie, #2) by Val McDermid by Val McDermid

In this 2nd book in the 'Inspector Karen Pirie' series, the cold case cop looks for a man who disappeared 22 years ago and a kidnapped baby boy who's been missing for over two decades. The book can be read as a standalone.

Val McDermid books are always good. 3.5 stars

Lilith (lilithp) | 368 comments I'm Thinking of Ending Things I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid

Such a beautifully written and poignant book. Yes, it's disturbing and possibly quite scary, but it is also deeply thoughtful and designed so perfectly.
If you find yourself saying, "what did I just read??", go back and read the italicized portions or read it again, as so many posters are saying. It is short enough and engaging enough.

But...If you read poetry, or like to read attentively, or both, you'll find it an easier read. You'll pick up so much from the first page. It's haunting.
Jake is going to stay in my heart for a long time.
