Finalist 1996 Shamus award for best novel. New Orleans, half the story takes place in 1965 and half in 1995, when the book was written. Very well done mystery regarding a black militant and the NOPD search for a serial killer. Pay attention, lots of moving parts here, but well worth it. 4 stars, highly recommended.

Matt Scudder #6, OK to read as stand-alone. Multiple price-winning mystery novel, deservedly so. Scudder gets caught up in 3 mysteries and works them all, more or less. This is a fairly early entry in the series and Scudder is still drinking. This is atmospheric and personal mystery writing done at a very high level. 5 stars.

When a toney prep school in Indiana experiences murders and suicides, the media takes notice; a profiler and cold case expert come to town to help sort things out.

Good book (if a bit complex): 3.5 stars

Araych | 677 comments Wild Thing Wild Thing (Peter Brown #2) by Josh Bazell by Josh Bazell

Peter Brown #2, series should be read in order. ( 1st is Beat the Reaper) Mafia killer turned doctor Peter Brown is now known as Lionel Azimuth and is hired to accompany an expedition to a lake in Minnesota to verify the existence there of a monster. Craziness and danger ensue. Sad to say this is the last book Bazell has written to date. Absolutely wonderful insanity mixed with a sort-of mystery. 5 stars, highly recommended.

In this 13th book in the 'Isabel Dalhousie' series, ethicist Isabel tackles problems related to her niece's engagement, and deals with a dying man's unusual request.

The book has the author's usual thoughtful musings. 3.5 stars

Rowland and his mates are in 1930s London, trying to elude the Nazis. It's a great mix of high and low society, politics, and murder in pre-war England.
