Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9970 comments The Burglar on the Prowl The Burglar on the Prowl (Bernie Rhodenbarr, #10) by Lawrence Block by Lawrence Block

In this 10th book in the comical 'Bernie Rhodenbarr' mystery series, the professional thief/amateur sleuth investigates a nefarious scheme. The book can be read as a standalone.

Overly complicated plot but the book provides some laughs. 3 stars

Araych | 676 comments Smoke and Mirrors Smoke and Mirrors (Stephens & Mephisto Mystery, #2) by Elly Griffiths by Elly Griffiths

Magic Men #2, OK to read as stand-alone. Brighton, England, early 1950's, winter. 2 children are missing and Detective Edgar Stephens is tasked with the search. I loved the first Magic Men book; this one not so much. First half is slow going, then things speed up. 3 stars.

Barbara | 1 comments I finished "The Island of Sea Women". This is going around as a popular book club pick. I thought it was pretty bad, mediocre writing, two dimensional characters, not well structured, and episodes of graphic violence, for the faint of heart. After I finished it, I talked to a few other readers who had the same reaction, that they just didn't understand the hype.

Araych | 676 comments The Shallows The Shallows (Nils Shapiro, #3) by Matt Goldman by Matt Goldman

Nils Shapiro #3, OK to read as stand-alone. Very fine entry in the series as Nils is hired to investigate a dead lawyer by his widow, and along the way encounters some very topical social and political issues. Great puzzling plot and fascinating characters. 4 stars, series is highly recommended.

I just finished Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit, a book to be read while it's daytime. I love the Netflix show but got to the book afterward, but it's different enough that I was creeped out. Hence the reading only during the day.

I read a few of John Douglas's books and they are interesting and scary studies of serial crime. The Anatomy of Motive is another good one. I read somewhere that he was the basis for the character in Silence of the Lambs who was the head of the behavior profiling unit.
