TALLY:

Option 1: Read a book you wanted to read for this challenge but that didn't quite fit the requirements for the task. The book must fit most of the parameters of the task, but miss by one detail.
The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels
DID NOT FIT: 30.2 Option A: read a book (fiction or nonfiction) that has "Classics" as a genre on its main page. It is a classic, but did not reach the 300 page length requirement
Option 2: Read a book you started once upon a time but didn't finish. You must have gotten through at least the first chapter or the first 25 pages.
Ecce Homo/The Antichrist by Friedrich Nietzsch
REQUIRED: I originally abandoned this about halfway through Ecce Homo about 12 years ago (about 50 pages). It is definitely not a re-read.
Option 3: Pick a book from GoodReads Best Book of the Year 2014 nominees and winners.
The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North
REQUIRED: It was a finalist in the Science Fiction category. It is not a reread.

25.9. Pat's task: Narcissus & Echo
NARCICUSS: A. Read a book that is written in first person. A first person narrative means the book is written from one person's point of view, speaking for and about themselves. It is characterized by narrators who explicitly refer to themselves using variations of "I." Example: Bridget Jones's Diary, Storm Front. Required: Include the first sentence of the book that demonstrates the first person perspective (the narrator specifically speaking for and about themselves).
As Chimney Sweepers Come to Dust by Alan Bradley - GOODREADS AUTHOR. 1st sentence: "If you're anything like me, you adore rot." This is the first time I ever read this book.
NARCICUSS: C. Read a book that shows exactly one person on the cover. Required: Include the cover when you post.

The Martian by Andy Weir - GOODREADS AUTHOR. This is the first time I ever read this book.
---------------------------------------------------------------
50.1. Teri-K's task: Let's Start the New Year Off Right
1) Close, But Not Quite
How to Build a Girl by Caitlin Moran. Almost fits task 20.2, option #1, but it's fiction instead of nonfiction.
3) Jump on the Bandwagon
Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng - GOODREADS AUTHOR. Was nominated in the Best Debut Goodreads Author category for the 2014 Goodreads Reader's Choice Awards. This is the first time I ever read this book.
5) Be Resolved
Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay - GOODREADS AUTHOR. I resolved to let myself be "on fire" this year, meaning to follow my passions and learn more about things I feel passionately about, in particular social justice. This book is a collection of critical and personal essays exploring racism and sexism and other issues pertinent to social justice. This is the first time I ever read this book.

Option 3: A book from the Best of Goodreads 2014 list
The Good Girl by Mary Kubica, which was a nominee for the Best of Mystery and Thriller section. This is NOT a re-read for me.

Option 5: read a non-fiction book that is about, or helps with, your new year's resolution
My new year's resolution was to be better informed about different cultures and big events that impacted the world, especially the ones that happened recently in my lifetime. I read Fukushima: The Story of a Nuclear Disaster by David Lochbaum and other co-authors to better understand that devastating event and the impact it had on US and Japan nuclear policies. This book is NOT a re-read.
Die Again and Fukushima are both approved by Teri-K here (post #136 for approval) .

20.6 - Seasoned Reader - Alicia T's task: Deployment
Pick ONE option and read a book that fits its criteria. Rereads and books with the genre "kids" or "childrens" on its main page may not be used for this task (but see note to option 2).
Option 3: Distance Makes the Heart Grow Fonder- If there’s one thing about deployments that I try to convey to my friends, it’s that you have to get creative with your relationship. In today’s world of technology, my husband and I almost have to be archaic with our affections. We write each other hand written letters, I send care packages full of his favorite snack foods, and he sends me flowers for no reason at all. We have to put a lot of thought and effort into making one another feel good emotionally when we can’t physically be next to each other. It’s forced us to think about all the little romantic gestures we can do, so for this option read a book with the genre "Romance" on the goodread’s main page. The genre may be stand alone or embedded.
