Aimee (pebbles320) I'd recommend The Penelopiad, a retelling of the Odyssey from Penelope's perspective (Odysseus' wife).

The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood

Emily de Boer (emilydeboer) does the prominence of the bird matter? my copy if city of the beasts by isabel allende has a tiny silhouette of a bird on a branch that is not the focus of the cover, but it's a bird on the cover all the same

Anne (annefullercoxnet) | 204 comments I think count it. It is a bird on the cover and that is exactly what the prompt says.

Lilith (lilithp) | 1082 comments Soft in the Head by Marie-Sabine Roger has birds on the cover!

Soft in the Head has a great first line too! "I've decided to adopt Margueritte. She'll be eighty-six any day now so there seemed no point in putting it off . Old people have a tendency to die."

And there's an upside down image on the cover.

Many thanks to the person who recommended this book. I can't remember your post or thread, but I'm in love with this book already. That's why I love this group!

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 608 comments I crossed this prompt off on Monday with White Bird White Bird by R.J. Palacio .

Every time I think I've had enough WWII fiction, I read one and love it. This one actually made me cry because it's just not fair in so many ways.

My original choice for this was The Unhoneymooners and now I'm annoyed because suddenly the search function is down and I can't link, lol.
Anyways, we'll see how the year goes. If I keep up my speed I may come back for this one.

Tracey Ruggles | 2 comments The Astonishing Color of After
By: Emily x. R. Pan
Prompt: a book with a bird on the cover.

This book took me about two weeks to read because it is about a child learning to deal with the death of her mother, never a lighthearted topic. The author’s use of color to describe emotions and actions in the book was unique, fun and refreshing. It was like having an entirely new set of words for various feelings. Great read for a mature young adult but amazing for anyone who has struggled with the death of someone close to them.

Marissa (marissajeanine) | 8 comments Where Things Come Back by John Corey Whaley Where Things Come Back by John Corey Whaley is a great read. It's a YA book and won the Printz and Morris Awards in the same year a number of years ago.

Oh two of my favorite things! Stories by First Nations writers, and horror! And the Arctic! OK, 3 things.

message 124: by Erica (new)

Erica | 1265 comments This works too. The book has a creature called a firebird in it inspiring the cover.

Ruin and Rising (The Shadow and Bone Trilogy, #3) by Leigh Bardugo

message 125: by Tori (new)

Tori (libroperdido) | 41 comments I just finished Flights by Olga Tokarczuk for this prompt (would also work for an upside down image on the cover prompt). It is the most unique book that I've read in, well, I don't think I've read anything like it. It was not always easy to follow and it took awhile to pick up the theme, but I found it quite intriguing.

I recognize my privilege and unconscious bias, and I'm taking this book for what it is, despite the controversy.

Appreciate the recommendation. I'm thinking of reading Among Penguins: A Bird Man in Antarctica by Noah Strycker, so it's good to hear that you enjoyed his writing.

Fell in love with the cover! Very funny guide, and some really accurate depictions of North American birds - author's sarcastic jibes aside. Perfect between a couple of heavier reads.
