This week we are putting on our math hats and reading a book that was published in a year that is a prime number. A prime number is "a natural number greater than 1 that cannot be formed by multiplying two smaller natural numbers". Check those publication dates and get to reading!

-----------------------------------
Suggestions:
You can find a list of prime numbers here.

Prime numbers from 1700 to 2020:

18th Century: 1709, 1721, 1723, 1733, 1741, 1747, 1753, 1759, 1777, 1783, 1787, 1789
19th Century: 1801, 1811, 1823, 1831, 1847, 1861, 1867, 1871, 1873, 1877, 1879, 1889
20th Century: 1901, 1907, 1913, 1931, 1933, 1949, 1951, 1973, 1979, 1987, 1993, 1997, 1999

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments I just found this, I like the number 1777 and wanted to look at that. It's Wikipedia so it probably needs checking, but it lists the year in books by year. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_...

Oh Emily! This was one of my absolute favorite reads of 2019. I was so taken by surprise (mostly because I thought I had picked up The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle for my book club selection *face palm*).

It was so lovely and delightful though. I wish I could go back in time before I read it, just so I can read it for the first time, again.

People have been mentioning such great books in this thread. Vanity Fair is a brick but an absolute joy to read. The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America still stays with me, and I read it when it first came out.

SadieReadsAgain (sadiestartsagain) | 452 comments What are you reading for this category? #MeToo: Essays About How and Why This Happened, What It Means and How to Make Sure it Never Happens by Lori Perkins
What year was this book published? 2017
Do you read more contemporary or more classic books? I read all over, but the bulk are later 20th century onwards.

I think the subtitle basically tells you what this book is all about. But I will add that it is a collection of essays from different individuals, including men, so the perspectives and experiences shared or alluded to are mixed. But they all come together with a powerful message, and that is really what the purpose of this book is. As with many anthologies, the pieces are on a spectrum. They range from analytical to emotional, and there are pieces that are stronger than others. But this is a protest book, it is raw and reactionary, maybe unpolished. That doesn't detract from the fact that it is important, and it still managed to be a good read. My only criticism is that it is very US-centric, but it's only a nit-pick at best because the movement began in the US, it's key antagonists are from the world of Hollywood, and unfortunately sexual abuse and harassment translate easily into every culture and language on earth.

message 42: by Wendy (last edited Mar 28, 2020 06:27AM) (new)

Wendy (wendyneedsbooks) | 393 comments I read Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks published in 2011. I read a decent mix of classic and contemporary books, though lately I've been skewing more contemporary.

Lately I've been on a New England history kick, and this book features a puritan girl growing up in a missionary family who befriends a Wampanoag boy, who grows up to become the first Native American to graduate Harvard. It's not the most uplifting book, but after this one I picked up Mayflower: A Story of Courage, Community, and War to get more historical background about the settling of New England and King Philip's War. Geraline Brooks did a fantastic job incorporating research and setting into this book.

As I read more it's getting to be that I'm reading more contemporary books because I've filled in the book spaces of classics that I'd like to read. Also I' reading way more often in the past few years so I can keep up with books as they're being talked about.
