message 159: by Eve (new)

Eve Fitzroy | 8 comments Just finished Boyd's elegant 'Blue Afternoon'... I had read it before but enjoyed it maybe twice as much. My own books are not in that league but sell well... maybe my new year res will be to up my style... worry that my readers won't appreciate it, though... there's nothing like a romantic thriller complete with happy ending set it Provence or Tuscany for my fans. Anyway, I thank you all and wish you a happy new year of reading.

message 163: by Bonnye Reed (new)

Bonnye Reed (brf1948) | 53 comments Reading a ARC by Ian Buruma called Their Promised Land. Presented in a memoir type style, this is the story of his Grandparents based on their letters to one another through both the first and second World Wars. Both Jewish Londoners, we see these wars through different eyes. And we see their relationship, the love and support and devotion, as well. An excellent read.

message 164: by Lance (new)

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 327 comments Finished Cuba: What Everyone Needs to Know last month, but didn't get around to reviewing it until now.

It isn't a popular history, nor is it an entirely scholarly work. That in-betweenness may or may not work for you, depending on what you're looking for. Will you be smarter at the end than you were at the beginning? Sure. Will you be able to read it on the beach at Varadero? Probably not. Three mojitos.

I love Jim Butcher - and Harry Dresden. Have you read Lila Bowen, yet? Her protagonist Nettie Lonesome isn't Harry, but she is really good at what she does.... First of the series is Wake of Vultures.

message 167: by Susan (new)

Susan | 193 comments Just finished the short story The Dryad's Shoe by T. Kingfisher . It was a great twist on the traditional Cinderella story.

message 168: by Alone (new)

Alone | 8 comments Just finished the book Mortal Showdown.

Full review at read that also

Set in Ukraine, this James bond meets Godfather kind of novel tells the tale of Mikhail Vorotavich , and contains politics and sex and espionage and violence and all what is required of an out and out thriller. Krasno puts more focus on unraveling the plot and let his characters set the atmosphere through their actions rather than go into tedious descriptions. This has made entire book crisp and give it a to the point feel.

Bonnye, I have not read her yet. I will look her up and possibly add her to my growing list of to-read books. Thank you for the suggestion! Dresden has been a joy to read. I have been blessed to read such incredible books the last year or so.

I NEED to read both of them. Spent weeks trying to de-clutter and got rid of two fairly small boxes of nicknacks to the second hand shop. I need to sort as I dust all this stuff!

In my review, I commented that it is mainly about living frugally and being less materialistic. It isn't really a guide to decluttering.

The one I read years ago and found helpful was Secret Of How To Win Freedom From Clutter Secret Of How To Win Freedom From Clutter by Don Aslett

Michael Brookes (technohippy) The Book of Cthulhu by Ross E. Lockhart

I've just posted my review of the Cthulhu mythos themed anthology The Book of Cthulhu. There's quite a few story reprints here so might not offer as much for the experienced reader in the genre, but if you're just discovering the joys of Cthulhu then it's worth checking out:
