Well then, I think I will continue to resist. Too many other good books waiting!

message 252: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3595 comments In fairness, Logan, I listened to the audio version and I think it was a really bad idea. If I remember correctly, Karen listened to the audio too, though I'm not 100% certain on that. I think it would have been better to read it. There was too much screaming, whining, and "noise" in the audio.

Jenn (engelsigh) | 1339 comments ~Melissa~ wrote: "Jenn wrote: "I'm almost half way through The Dinner by Herman Koch and it is nothing like Gillian Flynn... :( Not even very suspenseful."

Well that sucks....sorry"

The only thing it had in common with Gillian Flynn was that I despised the characters.

message 254: by Logan (new)

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments There are so many good buddy reads getting started that I'm worried I'm going to go overboard! I need to set up a spreadsheet to keep me organized I think. :)

message 255: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3595 comments I agree Logan. I hope that I haven't signed up for more than I can handle. There were a few others that I wanted to read, but didn't sign up for because I knew it would be too much. So many good reads planned.

message 256: by [deleted user] (new)

I just want the challenge to start already!!

message 257: by Logan (new)

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments Yes, me too!!

message 260: by [deleted user] (new)

If you can't tell, I really really like gifs.

message 261: by Logan (new)

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments Gifs make everything better. Keep 'em coming!

message 262: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (engelsigh) | 1339 comments Me too! I don't know if I can make it that long...

What is everyone currently reading?

message 263: by [deleted user] (new)

Lol I do have a rule about making them relevant to the conversation though!

"Taryn's Gif Standards and Rules"

Jenn wrote: "Me too! I don't know if I can make it that long...

I've been reading Gargantua and Pantagruel for what feels like years lol It's so long and I have to usually reread because I a) Don't remember what I read previously and b) Because the language is so ridiculous I have to go back over it. But hopefully I finish it for the challenge because it has a huge page number I think.

What about you?

message 265: by [deleted user] (new)

Also I was going to ask if any of you are members of paperback swap? It's how I'm getting most of my buddy reads lol

message 266: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (engelsigh) | 1339 comments I just finished The End of Everything by Megan Abbott and I'm working on Sister by Rosamund Lupton ...

I have a bunch of partial reads that I could be reading, but I'm waiting for the challenge to start.

I have paperback swap but I haven't used it in forever.

message 267: by Hilary (new)

Hilary (bookboss) I am currently reading Love, Lex (The Undergrad Years, #1) by Avery Aster and I love paperback swap :) I use it often!

I think that probably has a lot to do with it, Kristie. I loved The Knife Of Never Letting Go and I read the text version. I started the second one on audio and had to put it down. The audio with the extra noise was actually irritating me a lot.

message 272: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ I'm finishing up a book for my MM monthly team challenge - yay!! I finished two that I needed over the weekend. Gotta love time in a car with a fabulous hubby that will do the driving :)
We spent the weekend in Iowa for my son who participated in a wrestling tournament. Lots of 8th - 12th grade boys in the Uni-Dome. Great experience for my freshman. Was a beautiful drive with the changing colors.

How did your son do, Melissa? Hope he had fun!

Did you take I80 out to Iowa? If so I think that's the first time I've heard anyone call that drive beautiful. We make the trip back to Nebraska a few times a year and the boring scenery is always the worst part of the trip. :)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments I know is hard to wait. But we preferred to post it earlier, so that way teams would be ready to roll on the go live date.

Thanks to that we had new subscriptions enough to make two new teams

*happy dance*

Plus... look at all the buddy read already settled? It wouldn't be humanly possible to handle all that in a quick way if we waited to be closer to date.

No, we did a straight shot out 90 to US 20 to Waterloo/Cedar Falls IA and went through Galena Il, Dubuque etc. We did it both ways and stopped for a few hours in Galena. The changing leaves were beautiful.

That was my suspicion. We had to drive that route when I80 got flooded a few years ago and it was gorgeous! I'd never been out to Galena before and I'm so glad we got to see it. We want to vacation there.

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments The official start time has been announced! I've updated Post 15 with a link to the countdown clock, and I'll post again here.

COUNTDOWN TO CHALLENGE START

The start time is based on 8pm Sydney time, so for those of us in the US (is that everyone on this team?) that converts to:

Saturday, November 8th at 1am/2am/3am/4am in PST/MST/CST/EST.

That sounds like a nice time. I hope your son did well.

I've been through Galena when we did a trip from one end of RT 66 to the other...but I've never been to Iowa. Is it pretty?

I wish I could still read in the car without getting sick.

We went to a B&B before kids many many many yrs ago after the holidays. Lots of Christmas stuff on sale at the shops. Hubby hated that B&B,lol. Galena was gorgeous and we went across to Dubuque so he could gamble one day. A long weekend should do it. Fall is beautiful.

Well...son got two by's (meaning the other boy never showed up to the tournament and you win by default) his first real match he did pretty good but ended up getting pinned. Second match....yeah - wasn't pretty. The problem was my son didn't pay attention to his weight in the days leading up. He was 1 lb over his wt class which bumps you up to the next one - so he was really wrestling with boys that were about 4-5 lbs of muscle bigger than him. He needs to drop the lb so he can be at the high end of his wt class or bulk up (probably not gonna happen even if I stuff him, lol)

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Oh, Kristin! I'm so sorry to hear about the dog. That is so sad. *hugs* I love the image of you sneaking her into your bedroom and then back out in the yard!! Did your mom ever find out about that?

message 287: by Logan (new)

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments Kristin, my heart just breaks over the news about your dog! I'm so sorry you lost her. Big, big hugs.

message 288: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ Kristin - so sorry for the loss of your dog. Never easy - doesn't matter how old they are they are family. Hugs!!

I'm curious too if your mom ever knew you were sneaking the dog in....sounds like something I would have done.

message 289: by [deleted user] (new)

Kristin- Adding condolences about your dog. Pets are just like family. I have two kitties, and when one of them got really sick as a youngin' I worried over him like he was my kid.

It's nice to remember the fond memories though. My mom was always not an animal person when I was growing up, but when I got my kittens she loved them so much that she went out and got two of her own! It's funny how animals can change minds :)

Today I'm just basically waiting around in my house in anxiety, waiting for some thesis edits from my advisor. So I'm just gonna ask ya'll random questions in the hope that some of you are on goodreads and want to chat.

1. If you had to choose your five favorite books, what would they be? (No cheating! Only one book out of a series if it's your favorite series.)
2. What is your favorite sea creature?
3. Name one of your favorite television shows.
4. What is your favorite hot drink?
5. What is one thing in your life that you would never, ever do?

Here are my answers:

1. The Brothers Karamazov, The Shadow Rising, Sophie's World, The Blind Assassin, The Satanic Verses
2. Octopi because they are incredibly smart! I used to eat them, but after I watched one play, I decided they were too intelligent for me to even consider eating.
3. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
4. This is a tough one for me because I love all hot drinks even in the summer. But I'd have to say coffee probably keeps me sustained.
5. Live in the suburbs- sometimes I have panic attacks thinking that's where I might end up. (This is no offense to anyone living in the suburbs! The buying a house thing and settling down thing just aren't for me).

message 291: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (daughterofoak) | 3473 comments I have so many things I should be doing. GR is going to be the death of me :D.

1. If you had to choose your five favorite books, what would they be? (No cheating! Only one book out of a series if it's your favorite series.)
This is really tough! The Gods of Gotham, Sticks & Stones, Code Name Verity, The Spirit Thief, Honour And The Sword
2. What is your favorite sea creature?
I love everything about the sea. If I had to choose it would probably be a sea urchin just because they're so cool looking.
3. Name one of your favorite television shows.
I have three shows that I can't miss an episode of: The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and Supernatural.
4. What is your favorite hot drink?
Hot tea, unsweetened.
5. What is one thing in your life that you would never, ever do?
Sky dive or rock climb. I am terrified of heights. Even watching people do it on tv is too much for me.

I hope everything goes well with your thesis!

message 292: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you and yay for answering my questions! I am in the process of watching the Walking Dead right now. I tried once before, but the first season was so unlike the comics that it made me mad. Things get better as the seasons go on though. The sad part is that the comic is even more gruesome and soul-wrenching that the show could ever be.

message 293: by Logan (new)

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments Great idea Taryn! Love your answers! Coffee and It's Always Sunny = perfection.

1. Five favorite books: Outlander, Watchers, The Judas Strain, Rest in Pieces, Child 44
2. Favorite sea creature: Manatees!
3. Favorite television shows: Shark Tank, The Newsroom, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones
4. Favorite hot drink: Definitely coffee, preferably espresso
5. What is one thing in your life that you would never, ever do? Fly to outer space. The vastness of it terrifies me. Watching Gravity was like living through one long panic attack.

I thought of answering the same thing for #5. If I had to, I'd go. And maybe even to just face my fear of space. But you're right, I can't think of anything more terrifying (except maybe tornadoes). I'd have to take tons of Xanax.

There's one I buy from a local store called Ruby Sipper. It's a very fruity, tart tea that reminds my husband of the ponche they make in Mexico. I also love lapsang souchong, which is a smoked black tea. Very good!

It's very easy to become obsessed with the show :). The first time I ever watched it I turned it off right after (view spoiler) because I knew it was going to be amazing and I wanted to watch it with my family. We've been fans ever since.
