Aurora Blazing by Jessie Mihalik
Read: 10/4/2019
Rating: ****
This new release is book 2 of a science fiction romance trilogy that was touted by Ilona Andrews. It’s a charming book and I enjoyed the characters and the romance. The plot is a bit thin and relies a too much on the MCs incredible ability to get out of seemingly impossible situations. Also, it’s been two days since I finished reading it and I couldn’t remember the character’s names so perhaps not the most memorable book ever. But I thoroughly enjoyed it while I was reading it and I’m looking forward to the third book.
Bianca is the daughter of a powerful house who barely survived her arranged marriage to an evil genius. Ian is the director of the house’s security. When Bianca was young and Ian was her bodyguard she fell in love with him and he spurned her so they start off their relationship on rocky ground. Bianca gets attacked and her brother gets kidnapped and the story is Bianca and Ian eventually working together and falling in love while they rescue her brother.

Book: The Bridge Kingdom by Danielle Jensen
Finished: 10/5/19
Rating: 4 stars
Review:
This was an interesting book. Most certainly a romantic fantasy. The ending isn't quite a cliff hanger but it is one of those endings where there must of a book 2 in order to complete or continue the series and finish out the conflict laid out in book 1.
I liked the two main characters. Much of the story is centered around Lara and her wedding to Aren through an arrangement with their two kingdoms. Lara's story starts off with a bang and the book is super interesting except maybe at the point of 30%-50%. It's mostly just her sneaking around hearing half conversations, being the ultimate spy for her father's kingdom. My greatest criticism for Lara is (view spoiler)
Aren was a fun character. He's your classic handsome warrior king but he also has a vision for his kingdom beyond the Bridge. Also, (view spoiler) .
I think what really carries this book is the scenery and the world created within its pages. The characters are good but not anything new but the world is super interesting.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

Shelf #4 Auto Buy

The Mane Event by Shelly Laurenston
Read: 10/12/2019
Rating: ***
I liked the couples in these two PNR series and the humor worked for me. The world wasn’t very well developed, though. On the one hand the existence of shifters seems to be largely secret, but on the other hand shifters seem to often act out in public. My biggest complaint is the lack of much action—there was hardly any mystery or conflict in either of the two stories. This could be because they’re shorter stories, I’m going to try one more full length novel in the series to see if the plotting improves.
“Christmas Pride”
Mace and Dez are a very engaging couple. He’s a lion shifter and the brother of the power sisters who rule the Llewellyn pride. He’s way alpha but also very funny. She’s a human NYPD detective who knew Mace when they were kids but just discovers that he isn’t human. The final scene when all their difficult families and friends celebrate Christmas together is priceless.
“Shaw’s Tail”
I really liked Ronnie, she totally stood up to all of Brendon’s asshole behavior. She’s a wolf and he’s a lion so there’s a lot of dog and cat jokes. A cute romance but short on plot.

It’s a good series for some campy fun.

I am back. Trying to get things updated for us. Will request our Vampire and Favorite stamps later today.

REVIEW:
New author for me. Was drawn right in to this new world of paranormals. Loved the characters, the story and writing. Loved the connection between Pia and Dragos. She is feisty and he is all alpha male. Will definitely be checking out more books in this series.

REVIEW:
I have been loving this series and these characters. This is book 4 of the series and I have read them out of order with no problem. This is Benedict and Christina's story. I loved how Benedict went after what he wanted and didn't let Christina throw away their future together out of fear. I did become a little annoyed with Christina for second guessing Benedict's motives but I understood it was due to her history. Good writing, good characters and fun naughty times.

Where did you your cruise take you? I’ve only ever been in one before but it was a lot of fun! I definitely want to do it again!

Oh fun! My husband and I were booked to go to Jamaica for a week about three years ago and then I found out I was pregnant and that was at the height of Zika virus so we never made it. I really want to go though!

Book: The Blacksmith Queen by G.A. Aiken
Date Finished: 10/14
Rating: 4 stars
Review:
I enjoyed this novel by G.A. Aiken. I am a long time fan and I've pretty much read all she and Shelly Laurenston has published. For quite a few years, I enjoyed her dragons series. It was full of strong, brutal women who did not always have to rely on looks or sultriness or seduction to get their mate. I've always appreciated that. I was excited to read The Blacksmith Queen for this same reason. A blacksmith woman in a fantasy world? Yes please.
It was a fun adventure. Was it very different from how G.A. Aiken wrote her dragons novels? Not really. But were there some fun moments and did I love all the characters? Absolutely. Keeley is such a sweet yet brutal character. I loved her. She was KICK ASS. This was very much her story and not a story about her romance with Cade. Sure there was a romantic element however this is very much the establishment of Keeley's story so I think people will be able to temper their expectations walking in. One of my criticisms of G.A. Aiken before was that we went from a fantasy romance series to a fantasy series with romantic elements. And I can't stand when an author changes the very genre of their series in the middle of it. Anyway, all that to say, this is a good start and it's clear what this series is and what it isn't.
I look forward to book 2.

I’m going to change my selection for fantasy romance to

Reaper by Larissa Ione
I noticed Steph picked this book with one person tagging it. I just got it last week and really want to return to the Demonica universe.

Shelf #5 Fantasy Romance

Reaper by Larissa Ione
Read: 10/18/2019
Rating: 4 stars
These books are so much fun if you can totally suspend disbelief and don’t mind lots of torture and death. I can’t believe I used fun and torture in the same sentence!
At this point, 19 books into the Demonica World, there are so many old characters and couples around it’s hard to keep them straight. The male MC here alone has a bunch of children who have had their own books. Azagoth, the Grim Reaper, is a very dark grey character and really burns things down in the book’s conclusion. It kind of bothered me that he and Lilliana still get a HEA even though lots of people must have died because of his actions. But anything goes for love in this world.

It was awesome! I actually finished it Friday and immediately went into book 2. I'm going to finish book 2 today.

Book: The Bird and the Sword by Amy Harmon

Date Read: 10/18
Rating: 5 stars
Review:
What. A. Story. I loved it from beginning to end. It was such a beautiful story, so poetic. Man I loved Amy Harmon's writing. She's a new to me author but this will definitely NOT be the last I will check out from her. It was just pure gold.
The story follows Lark, a person with a special gift in a world where the gifted are subject to death if anyone ever finds out about them. Lark seems oblivious to someone on the outside looking in but she is so much more. She is smart, has her own well-thought out opinions, is compassionate, and such a fighter. I loved everything about her character. King Tiras had to grow on me but once he did, I loved him. I loved their relationship and loved the general plot of the story (fighting against this scourge of half men/half birds that had a taste for human flesh).
I also love this book for what it's not: it's not YA. It's definitely NA and that nuance makes a difference. Sex scenes are fade to black but still they happened and other very adult things happened. It's not your standard YA that relies on the overused plot device that there is a love triangle that the main female character has to navigate. I also love that this complete story - for these two characters as leads - is captured in this one book. Too often authors try to extend a story that just doesn't have the mettle to be extended over the course of several books. This is especially prevalent in YA/NA fiction. I appreciate that this story is a one and done.
5 stars all around and I immediately started reading the second book.

Shelf #6 Alternate Reality

The Good, the Bad, and the Undead by Kim Harrison
Shelved 4 times
This is my one reread. Kim Harrison is leading a reread of the Hollows books in a goodreads group. It’s leading up to the release of American Demon. For anyone who’s interested there are some pretty good discussions including Kim chiming in frequently.

I will try to get some updating done today on my lunch break. My cable and internet went back out shortly after I announced it was back on. Going on a week now with no service. Not fun.

I read all of the Hollows books in one go back in 2017. It was one of the series that got me hooked on Urban Fantasy. Rereading it now with so much more UF under my belt is interesting and the books hold up well—they are just great fun. The plots are rollicking and I love all the quirky side characters. Rachel, the heroine, is appealing the way a troublesome younger sibling might be. I love her but I wish she’d think through the consequences of her actions a bit more. Reckless and impulsive is an understatement! (view spoiler) ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

READ: To Woo A Warrior BY Jane Cousins 10/23/19 4 STARS
REVIEW: Enjoyed this story. New world and characters to love. Hadleigh is a fierce warrior woman who kicks butt, but she doubts her own beauty because of her knucklehead brothers. Vaughn is also a warrior and he claims Hadleigh before even fully seeing her. He realizes that Hadleigh really doesn't believe that anyone would want to date her. He does his best to woo her and build her confidence.
Great writing, world building and secondary characters.

I switched my Fantasy romance selection to Dark Surrender by Rachel Van Dyken and read Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews for my Alternate reality selection
