Review: Bowen Knight, after getting grievously wounded, comes back to life in the care of a scientist that has put a chip in his brain to block all psy telepathy. This is what the human world has been trying to achieve. But this depends on three separate injections of experimental drugs and all does not go according to plan.

He wakes from the first surgery, to find the cook leaning over him. The cook? Even though he needs to concentrate on the experiment, he is distracted by Kiai. Kiai is only comfortable in the blue water but when she becomes close to Bowen, she must make a choice.

Very fast paced and very well done story but I have to admit I really didn't like the blue water people very much until about half way through the book.

Book - Sapphire Flames by Ilona Andrews
Shelf - Alternate Reality
Pages - 352 pages
Date Read - Nov 1
Rating - 5 stars
Review - Read the in between novella first!! I'm always surprised when books like that are critical (IMO) to truly understanding what's going on in the 'first' of a series. Sapphire Flames reintroduces a key character from the novella who I was very excited to see again, her power is very interesting. The time jump and Catalina's knowledge about her siren ability are a little less jarring with the information the novella provides as well.
I loved this book. I loved Catalina and Alessandro, I loved the story line, I loved seeing all of my favorite side characters, I loved it all. It was so much fun seeing Catalina grow into her own and develop as a character (the novella partially reassured me-and, of course, I knew Ilona Andrews wouldn't steer us wrong-but Catalina's fade into the wallpaper personality didn't excite me to read about). ...But it wasn't Nevada and Mad Rogan. And I really, really missed that. It felt like someone had washed my favorite jeans and they just don't feel the same but you can't say why.
I am eagerly looking forward to the next book. I want my favorite jeans to fit right again and I'm hoping that will happen with a little more time. Still 100% a five star read.

Review - This is my one reread (mini review of Kill the Queen - I am not a mood reader but I couldn't seem to ever be in the mood to read this book. I know and quite enjoy Estep's writing and storytelling, so I honestly have no idea what my problem was. I had no issues with the book but could no seem to want to read it.)
I love Slave to Sensation. It kicks off an amazing series full of some of my favorite fictional couples. Sascha darling and Lucas are.... ughhh I love them. They are everything I enjoy in a romance.
I'm coming to realize that I really enjoy 'trailblazer' stories and heroines. I would love Sascha and Meg (from The Others series by Anne Bishop) regardless but their stories stick with me a little more than future heroines because they were so brave to 'go first'.

Of Blood and Bone (Chronicles of The One, #2) by Nora Roberts
Book: Of Blood and Bone
Author: Nora Roberts
Series: Chronicles of The One #2
Pages: 453
Qualifies: On the SOS Bookshelf Magic under dystopian - added 11/27/18

Read: 11/6/19

Review: Fallon Swift, prophesied to be The One to lead the forces of Light against the Dark, grows to the age of 13 on the farm with her witch mother, Lana and her human husband, Simon and three brothers. The world has been devastated by a plague called The Doom released by the Dark. The survivors are attacked by gangs of violent roaming Raiders and bigoted Purity Warriors opposed to Magickals. At 13, Mallick is sent by the Light to take Fallon for training. The first half of the book deals with that, and her return to start building her force. The story alternates with action in New Hope a village growing a tolerant society, defending their land and rescuing like minded people, human and magickal. The rest of the book brings these two groups together with a climax centered around an internal spy and the attempted destruction of all they are building. The feel of this book is as a bridge. All of the characters have been fleshed out. There are clashes, both physical and of personality, as people adjust to their place in the future. There are scenes of conflict and battle as they push outward and meet various enemy forces. But it all feels like a bridge to something bigger, obviously what we will get in the last volume. Looking forward to it.

Review - Kate Daniels is a mercenary in a reality where magic ebbs and flows. When it is up, technology fails and when down there are all sorts of issues. Trying to find the killer of a man that she knew, Kate works with a pack of shapeshifters. Is the packmaster a bear, as is rumored or something else. She also works with the head necromancer that controls all the vampires in the region. Each has lost things that have raised the tension between each other. As Kate works to find out who is behind all the issues, she must also hide her true strength.

I found this an enjoyable book but I didn't really like Kate until at least halfway through the book. There were a lot of interesting characters in the story though and I will read the next one as well.

Sandy | 279 comments Book - Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost
Shelf - Kick Ass Herione
Pages - 358 pages
Date Read - Nov 8
Rating - 4 stars

Review: Cat is a half vampire - wait what? half vampire/half human - the results of her mother's rape at the hands of a vampire. All her life, she has been different and not just in the fact that she is illegitimate. Her mother has raised her to kill vampires. All Vampires. But when she meets the bounty hunter, Bones, she finds herself teaming up with him to train and trap rogue vampires. Will she learn that there are good vampires as well as bad ones like the one that caused her birth?

This was a really good book and in it you saw Cat begin to grow and change. The fly in the ointment is her mother who does not love Cat for what she is but continually reminds her of the evil within her.

Cat gives up way too much for her mother...but the book was really well done and showed some imagination in her character. I will read on in the series.

Book - Firefighter Griffin by Zoe Chant

Rating - 3 stars
Review - I've been really enjoying quick, yummy reads from Zoe Chant. Firefighter Griffin is the third book in the Fire & Rescue Shifters series and, unfortunately, my least favorite of the eight or so Chant books I've read. This probably isn't entirely fair but the book felt unnecessarily 'heavy'. When I pick up these short paranormal romances, I'm looking for something familiar, light, steamy, not much thought required. Firefighter Griffin had a lot of custody, absentee parent suddenly interested etc drama and I just wasn't in the mood for that at all. I would have probably loved this book if Reiner (Danny's biological father) had just decided to continue staying away. In a non-quickie romance, I might have enjoyed the added depth to the difficulties of parenting but meh. Some of the decisions made really bothered me.

Review - Imogen is an insurance clerk trying to save to open her own bakery when after working late, she finds her boss in tears at her desk. Her engagement party director has just quit and left her without dessert for her engagement party the next day.

Imogen volunteers to do the desert and realizes with the money she is promised she will be able to open her bakery this year. However, at the engagement party she meets a lady that suggests she try out for a bake off competition to be the head of the bakery at the royal water palace.

She makes her desert and wraps it up preparing to send it off the next day but her apartment burns down and she looses everything including the desert she made. Yet the next morning, while answering questions for the fire warden she gets an envelope stating she was chosen. With the passport provided she makes her way to France with just the clothes she can buy from the airport and finds that she ends up in a magical island. But wait - she too is magical. Everyday people one person gets eliminated - however - it wasn't supposed to be by murder.

I really liked the book but at times the confusion and thoughts sounded more like a young adult / teen than a grown woman. For that I gave a 3 and not a four. Because I did enjoy the world building in this story I will read on...

Review: When 17 year old Katy Swartz moved to WV from FL just before her senior year she was not thrilled. Nor was she enchanted by her hunky but obnoxious neighbor, Daemon Black. His twin sister, Dee was another thing though. She was beautiful and super friendly. Katy made a couple of other friends but soon found that the Black's and their friends, Thompson triplets, did not mix with everyone else. And something was really different about them. The push/pull relationship with Daemon results in an argument that almost gets Katy killed but Daemon literally stops time to save her life. As Katy inevitably is drawn into their secrets her life is for ever changed. The beginning of the book was a little slow setting up the world and very immature teenage angst. However, when the drama began it got considerably better and the dialog more thoughtful. Looking forward to see where this goes next.

Review: When Tessa's aunt dies in America, and her brother sends her a request to come to him in England, Tessa sells all her worldly possessions and travels across the sea to meet up with her brother. She is met at the dock by two of her brother's landladies with a note in her brother's hand that they can be trusted. She finds to her dismay and horror that these ladies mean her vast harm and have undertaken the training of her in a power she never knew she had.

Jem and Will, two boys that are fighting against the evil in the city, rescue her and take her to their headquarters. There she joins the fight against this evil of demons and vampires because they swear to help her find her missing brother.

This was a really good book with the characters growth highly visible ( Tessa's especially ) and some back stories flushed out as well. I found the book very entertaining and some surprising twists along the way. The automatons, I could have done without, but they did play a good part of the story. I will read on because there are many story threads left open. Great characters and enjoyable.

Review - I am madly in love with this series, I was so sad when I thought it was over with the third book. But the Eon and humans have teamed up again and I thoroughly adored Allie and Brack. Kiss Of Eon was everything I have enjoyed about these books. Equal parts actual interesting, creative story and absolutely steamy, delicious romance. And don't forget the stubbornness and banter! I really enjoyed the beginning tension between Brack and Allie, I think it's one of the things Hackett really shines at writing.
I was glad to see the overarching plot progress with the alliance between humans and Eon. I love the original 'trilogy' but I'm ready for more progress and for complete Kantos destruction.
