Hi, Victoria! You are in luck. Our Genre Challenge for December is Fantasy or Adventure. You might want to check it out. (A shark book would fit in with the Adventure category, if you're interested.)

Marjorie (marjorielest) | 114 comments Hi All,
My name is Marjorie or Margie. After reading a lot of the introductions, I think I am the old lady of the group (just turned 50). I am the assistant manager at a subsidized housing complex. I am married with 7 adult children and 7 grandchildren. Reading is a passion. I usually have three books going at a time. I enjoy different genres. I am looking forward to discussing books with everyone. I also enjoy sewing, cross stitch, hiking and the ocean.

Marjan (marjanlaros) | 7 comments Hi everyone!
I’m Marjan, tomorrow 20 years old, from Holland, now living in the south of Germany with my boyfriend and cat:) Fantasy books are the ones I tend to enjoy the most. My reading goes with ups and downs so I hope I’ll be able to find more motivation here when I’m in a reading slump. At the moment my reading is going great and I’m enjoying it very much.

Fran | 710 comments Hello. My name is Fran and I'm a homeschooling mama of 4. We use a literature based approach, which means we read ALOT. Before I could read I was introduced to "story tapes" (remember cassette tapes) and after learning to read, books became my oxygen. My reading preferences are mysteries, thrillers, and historical fiction, although if you check out my shelves I clearly will read anything. At the very least I rate all my books. I just joined good reads and am looking forward to reading new books and making new friends.

Sure. Just pop in on the threads (which you can find here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...) and after reading the ongoing conversation hop along. Feel free to discuss/ask/share anything you might have regarding the books that you're reading. In case of Challenges, share about the books you're planning to read or are reading for that particular challenge (say we have Fantasy for December, so we all share about what fantasy books we are planning to read, or are reading or have just finished reading and what we think about them. You can even ask or give recommendations.) Just do what you feel like, there are no restrictions :)

For Caraval's buddy read, drop in here to join the conversation: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

XG (believen) Hi!
I'm Xi, or XG if you like initials.
Just finished medical school. I feel like I deserve a break from all my medical textbooks so here I am! Also have a part time job at a bookstore before I start residency next year. I love sci-fi and mystery, but I read everything. Glad to be part of a group!

Scott My name is Scott Aguirre and like everyone here, I love to read. I'm 29 years old and work as a substitute teacher. I love what I do because I have so much time to sneak in a chapter or two at work. I tried Nanowrimo and got punched in the mouth. I'll learn from the obstacles faced and do better next year aha. I also love playing video games in addition to reading and writing. I hope I'm not too crazy over Super Smash Ultimate this coming week and get a handful of books read by the end of the year!

message 438: by Arno (new)

Arno Hello everyone,

My name is Arno and I am a 23 years old student from Belgium. When I have the time I like to read or plan my next holiday. This year my goal is 15 books and next year I want to read 24 books so I joined this group to keep me motivated and give me some reading recommendations/goals.

I try to read a lot of different genres but I tend to gravitate towards Fantasy, Sci-Fi (only recently) and History/Historic Fiction. This Year I also focussed on reading some classics like Dracula, Dune, Around the world in 80 days, Frankenstein... This is probably something I'm going to continue doing in 2019.

Welcome, Arno! Please look at our message boards to see all of our reading challenges . Since you are starting to read classics, you might be interested in the Classics Catchup Challenge: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

A good way to get recommendations: look at these posts and see what books other members have read. I get many recommendations that way.

inactive (circuside) | 2 comments Heylo! I'm Heli, late twenties, Finnish. I'm genderqueer, pan, and polyamorous, in other words not a very conventional person. I'm on disability because of mental health issues and have been all my adult life, which means I have time to read. A lot.

I like magical realism, science fiction, speculative fiction, contemporary lit fic, urban fantasy, both adult and YA, but I often wander outside of my preferred genre limits. I read nonfiction too, currently mostly theoretical physics and philosophy, also love neuroscience and LGBTQ+ studies. I love picking up books that I never thought I'd like to see if I am surprised. Currently reading Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan. My page is a mess and overdue an update on my TBR and categorizing stuff, never mind that, I excel in procrastination.

Hey Heli, welcome to the group. We all are bibliophiles, so we all are unconventional as it is, so I'm sure you'll fit right in. I also have a couple of mental health issues, though people around me try to act as if they (my issues) don't exist (mostly my parents.)
You've got a really wide range of preference in genres so I'm looking forward to your book recommendations. Also, do have a look around. I think you'll love the Genre Challenge we host every year. For this, we have a different genre (sometimes 2) every month. This month is Fantasy and Adventure and January will be Sci-Fi.

BTW, is Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan the one on which the new Netflix series is based on?

message 446: by Dominic (new)

Dominic Hello. I'm Dominic. Just joined the group last month. I read a little of everything. Fiction/Non-Fiction. Just fiction, historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy, horror, mystery, adventure, pulp fiction (kind of a fanatic here), classical literature(is that a thing?). History, science, biography. Can't think of everything that read, am reading, and want to read. Looking forward to the genre challenges.

Ta! Yes, the genre challenge seems intriquing! Maybe next year :D I recently bought 15 books and banned myself from buying more until January because my god. Also, yes, Altered Carbon on Netflix is based on Richard Morgan's book! I actually watched that and wanted to read it afterwards, it's a trilogy, and I think... continued by two more Takeshi Kovacs books after that? Not entirely sure. Neither am I sure if the series was based on the trilogy or the first book. Sorry you have mental health problems, especially that they aren't being taken seriously *sends hugs*
