Just finished
The Good Doctor by Jessica PayneJessica Payne. Here's my 4* review
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
What a fascinating mix of biography, mystery, and history. The Postcard, by acclaimed French author Anne Berest, is what she uncovered about the disappearance of her Russian Jewish family during WWII. Just remarkable!
5★ My review of The Postcard
A Million Ways: Stories of Motherhood - An anthology by various indie authors.
Loved a majority of the stories in this collection. Good for family drama readers.

Just got done with Shadows of the Lost by Maxym M. Martineau
and it was porn... and a spin-off of another series... Nowhere in the blurb did it say these things, if they had, I wouldn't have requested it. I only gave it two stars because of those reasons and the MCs each had their own pity party for 50% of the book, but the 10% of story did have potential.

Inheritance by late Aussie author Kath O'Connor
A poignant read, but not as impactful as I had expected.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Children of the Sun by Beth Lewis
Loved the premise of this cult fiction combined with sci-fi elements, but some elements in the writing could have been better.

I can't pass up a good sampler, and the latest Buzz Books 2023: Fall/Winter is full of tempting excerpts. I've picked some I like the look of and included many short quotes to tempt you too. These are always available for free online from Publishers Lunch as well. Check the GR blurb for more info.
5★ My review of Buzz Books Fall/Winter 2023
The Half Moon by Mary Beth Keane
This had everything that should have worked for me, and yet it didn't. Disappointed.

The Road To Dalton by Shannon Bowring
This needs more readers - it is such an excellent literary fiction novel, and a debut one at that! I got this from Edelweiss but it is still up for request on Netgalley.

After reading your review I have requested this, Rosh. 🤞❤📚
Just finished Citadel by C.M. Alongi
and I liked it. Wasn't perfect, 3 stars, but it was very well done. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The Girl on the 88 Bus by Freya Sampson
Earlier published in the US as 'The Lost Ticket'. A mixed bag for me, slightly tilted towards the positive side.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Black River by Nilanjana Roy
An interesting Indian noir. Pretty good, but would have been great had the author stuck to the crime investigation elements in the plot rather than trying too much.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The World Outside My Window by Clare Swatman
Why have alcoholic protagonists gone beyond thrillers and entered women's fiction? Such a disappointment.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The Twilight Garden by Sara Nisha Adams
Quite a nice read, though a bit too long.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Got two done this week,
Those We Drown by Amy Goldsmith. I gave it 2 stars. It was ok but could've been a lot better. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...Just finished today, Emergent Properties by Aimee Ogden,
and this was NOTHING like Murderbot! except it was a short story but it was boring. 1 starhttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The Rush, by Aussie author Michelle Prak, is a scary outback, backpacker thriller! Storm, blackout, body lying at the side of the road in torrential downpour ... do you stop or get the heck out of there?
4★ My review of The Rush
Mortal Follies by Alexis Hall
Made a mortal folly by picking this one up. Expected far more from this historical fantasy.

The Clearing by Simon ToyneI'm a slow reader and currently am 60% through this book. I discovered this author with an ARC of his previous novel, Dark Objects. I am enjoying reading this one as the last. The story is gripping, suspense is high, and the protagonist, Laughton Rees, is delightful and opens up about herself more that in Dark Objects. Rees is researching folklore and serial killers and finds more than what she bargained for.
To Catch a Storm didn’t work for me, requiring too big a suspension of belief. ,y three star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Women We Buried, Women We Burned: A Memoir by Rachel Louise Snyder
A good memoir, though I had expected it to focus a bit more on the domestic violence problem and on the author's international experiences, as the blurb seems to hint.

Five big stars for The Connellys of County Down
. Heartwarming and moving. My review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I finished Fearless by M.W. Craven
, and this one is violent! It's not bad, but there's A LOT of killing. I was expecting sci-fi, but that is not what this is! Give me werewolves and vampires. They aren't real monsters, humans are.It was still a good read, but not for anyone under 21.
3 Stars
Here and Queer: A Queer Girl's Guide to Life by Rowan Ellis is exactly what it says it is, BUT, it doesn't indicate how vibrant and detailed and caring it is. This should be readily available in all schools and community libraries for those young girls everywhere who feel so unsure.
5★ My review of Here and Queer... with several of the colourful illustrations.
The Lost Bookshop by Evie Woods
Heart-warming for book lovers, and enjoyable as long as you don't overanalyse it.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The Illusions by Liz Hyder
Historical fiction with a dash of magic. By far, my best read of June 2023, and one of my favourite reads of this year so far.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Dust Child by Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai
An OwnVoices historical fiction focussing on the Vietnamese experience during the war. Mostly great.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Just finished The Never-Ending End of the World by Ann Christy
The main idea of this story, looping, was very creative. Too bad the ending wasn't that great.
3 star read

How It Unfolds by James S.A. Corey is the first quirky sci-fi story in The Far Reaches collection. How many lives can you live in how many different places?
My review of How it Unfolds
A Midnight Kiss on Ever After Street by Jaimie Admans
If you like fairy tale romances in a gorgeous setting, this one will work for you.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
5* for this wonderful book available on NetGalley and Edelweiss
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The Woods Are Waiting by Katherine Greene
Fab cover and atmosphere. Nothing else works.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Sci-fi, mystery. Void by Veronica Roth is an entertaining short story about the murder of a tourist in space.
My review of Void
The Long Game by Ann Leckie is another quirky and still topical sci-fi short story about people and humans - two different things.
My review of The Long Game
Killer Traitor Spy
is a very current Aussie thriller in former journalist Tim Ayliffe's Greater Good series. It's not just Reds under the bed anymore! It's a big world and it's full of spiesI love the series, but this would be just as good as a standalone.
My review of Killer Traitor Spy
The Housekeepers by Alex Hay
This made me realise that heist stories are better watched than read. A decent debut though.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Finished Kane by Dick Wybrow
last night, and while I loved the idea of a wolf/dog getting bitten by a man and the chaos that would create, it didn't happen. But there were still a few funnies.I rounded up my rating to 3 Stars
