Week 6
Spot: 44
Book: No Tomorrow by Tom Wood
Qualification: Victor the Assassin #4
Pages: 487
Finished: 05 Oct 2019
Rating: ★★★★
Review:
Russian gangster Norimov, an old associate of Victor's who once betrayed him, now needs his help. Threats have been made, not just against Norimov himself, but also against his estranged daughter Gisele, who has since gone missing - and Victor is the only one he believes capable of keeping her safe. Accepting the job despite his misgivings, Victor finds himself thrust into an unfamiliar role: That of protector instead of just coldblooded killer. Though of course before he can protect Gisele, he needs to find her first - preferably before anyone else does.
Victor is very much out of his element here, with a civilian along for the ride - which is an interesting departure from his usual lone wolf mindset. I'm glad the author eschewed the usual clichés one might expect from this set-up: While Gisele is definitely an inexperienced civilian entirely out of her depth, she's not just the stereotypical completely useless hysterical female who'll dissolve into tears when she breaks a nail - and I'm doubly glad that Wood also doesn't do what (unfortunately) about 90% of other author might have, namely having Victor and her hook up. Seriously, thank you so very much for not going there! Another excellent read that kept me hooked.

The Last Suppers by Diane Mott Davidson
Date Read: 10/5/2019
How it fits: #4 in A Goldy Bear Culinary Mystery series
Rating: 3 stars
Review: In this book, Goldy is all set to marry Tom, but he disappears about 30 minutes before the wedding starts, after a cryptic phone call that the priest who was going to perform the ceremony was dead. I really liked the recipes in this, but the mystery fell pretty flat - it was all church politics and I just didn't care much. I know all the books don't have the same slant, so I'll keep reading the series, but it is (obviously) not a big rush.

Love Irresistibly
Pages: 274
Qualification: #4 in the FBI/US Attorney series
Finished: 10/6/19
Rating: 4 stars
Review: I think this series benefited from a long break. It’s clear that Julie James has abandoned the romantic suspense genre entirely in favor of contemporary romances involving AUSA/FBI characters. I actually had forgotten that was how this series started until I checked my tags and wondered why the hell I had this listed as a suspense novel when it was anything but. Luckily I had no expectation going into this as it had been a few years since I read book 3, and all I knew was that I liked James’ writing and was in the mood for a smiley cute romance.
And she delivered, as usual. You can tell James lives in Chicago. She writes the setting with such authenticity I felt I was home for a bit. I loved Brooke and Cade, both separately and together. They each had full backstories that made them well rounded and contributed to how well they suited each other to make their future believable. I also appreciated there was no big obstacle to overcome here. They both simply needed to decide whether they wanted a real commitment or not. It was healthy, adult, and refreshing. Loved this one!

Qualification: Frisky Beavers #4

Finished: 10/7
Rating: ★★★★
Review:
Ahhhh I love this series. These characters are so fun to me and I'm only slightly obsessed with the Canadian-ness. I really would not mind a spin off series for just the hockey players though, I'm just saying.
I can't wait for the next book in this series.

Book: Silver-Tongued Devil by Jaye Wells
Qualification: Sabina Kane #4
Pages: 405
Finished: 10/7/19
Rating: 3 stars
Review: The book was pretty slow for the first 3/4s. Sabina doesn't seem to know what to do with herself now that she has her happy ending. Maisie is not recovering well. Giguhl is hilarious as always. But things are moving forward for the peace treaty between the vampires and mages (view spoiler) ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

Week 6: Spot 44

Killer Insight by Victoria Laurie
How it Fits: Psychic Eye Mystery #4
Pages: 288
Finished: 10/7/19
Review: I enjoyed this one! I liked the mystery of it - but had pegged the killer a little bit early. But still a good storyline. I thought it was a good book that read fast. It had been over a year since I read the 3rd book in the series but had no problem jumping right back in with Abby and her crew. A good book that has me excited for getting to the 5th in the series.
Middle of the night here now, so I'm going to sleep. Would someone else please roll if/when Runell gets around to posting her review?

Yay! I was hoping for a 1 because Logan found this ridiculous book but alas, it will have to wait :D
Beth wrote: "Runell just messaged Denise and I that she is dropping out. I was trying to figure out if I should roll or wait until Denise wakes up. What do y’all think?"
It's a good thing you didn't wait for me! XD Got entirely too little sleep this week, so the first time I didn't have an alarm going off at 6 or 7, I promptly didn't crawl out of bed until noon.
I'll see about getting us a back-up player.

Book: The Darkest Day by Tom Wood
Qualification: Victor the Assassin #5

Only 3 more books in the series after this one! That bonus point is making you work for it lol
Mostly the "work" consists of holding off on reading the next one straight away rather than waiting for the next roll! :D
Week 7

Book: The Darkest Day by Tom Wood
Qualification: Victor the Assassin #5
Pages: 400
Finished: 12 Oct 2019
Rating: ★★★★
Review:
Lured into an ambush, Victor finds himself targeted by another professional killer just as good as he is. While he just about manages to get away from her, he has no intention of allowing the possibility that she might come after him again. His search for answers to the most pertinent questions - Who is she? How did she find him? Who sent her? - takes him to New York, where he unwittingly becomes a central part of a conspiracy - and to stop it, he has little choice but to forge an uneasy temporary truce with the woman he came to kill.
While a solid, entertaining read, this one wasn't quite up to the standard set by the previous books IMO - less running and chasing and a little more actual plot would have been nice.

How it Qualifies - #5 in the Jayne Frost series

Book: Pocket Apocalypse by Seanan McGuire
Qualification: #4 in InCryptid series
Pages: 352
Finished: 10/12/19
Rating: 4 stars
Review: Alex and Shelby head to Australia to help her family with a werewolf outbreak. Her family hates Alex and her dad wastes major time in pissing contests with him. The werewolf mystery is pretty interesting and I was thrilled that (view spoiler) This series keeps getting better and I'm excited to go back to Verity's POV, although I am hoping we eventually see the youngest Price child.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

Hard Bitten
Series: Chicagoland Vampires #4
Pages: 350
Finished: 10/14/19
Rating: 4 stars
Review: I really should give this 5 stars for balls alone. I kind of got sucker punched with this one because I had been underestimating the story and the author a little bit.
The first couple of books didn't totally enthrall me. I felt like the world was a little underdeveloped in places, but also confusing at times, like the author knew more than she was clearly explaining, if that makes sense. I didn't totally buy into the stakes or the big picture of Merit's new place in this world she knew nothing about, and then she turned into this badass who is of course more powerful than she should be, blah blah Twilight syndrome.
This book is the first where I really felt like I understood Merit and her motivations for doing her job. I'm still a little confused by the boy drama, but was willing to go along with it. I'll take well written sexual tension any day, even if it seems dumb.
BUT THAT ENDING. Like it's pretty hard to shock me, so color me surprised when some major characters eat dirt in the final showdown. I'm so curious as to where this story goes now and the whole series got way more interesting now. I may need to go back and start over to see if I missed any hidden secrets along the way.
Super fun, so glad I read it. Bring on book 5!

Book: Slap Shot by Kelly Jamieson

Finished: 10/16
Rating: ★★★★
Review:
This book didn't honestly do anything groundbreaking, but it got a high score for something a lot of people probably wouldn't even notice or care about.
The non-ableism of someone with a mental illness.
The writing is great, I liked the romance even if it felt a little awkward at times. What can I say, I love the broken boys.
This was a fun quick read and it's been on my Netgalley shelf for way too long. I'll definitely be going back and reading more books in the series.

Valentine Murder by Leslie Meier
How it Fits: Lucy Stone #5
Pages: 272
Finished: 10/16/19
Rating: 4 stars
Review: I have really enjoyed the Lucy Stone books. This one was fun since it was centered around a library. While these books are technically cozy mysteries, I find them to be not too cookie-cutter cozies. So they're much more enjoyable to me. Lucy is a fun character who just can't keep her nose out of the murders in her small Maine town. I'm always looking forward to reading more Lucy Stone.

How it Qualifies #5 in Jayne Frost series
Date Read: 10/15/2019
Rating: 3.5 Stars
Review: This is definitely a "light" book, which was just what I needed. Jayne Frost is the niece of Santa Claus, and Lives in Nocturne Falls, running the Santa's Workshop Toystore there. A supernatural blizzard comes, the community is invaded by Yetis, and Jayne and her friends have to figure out how to stop it. I really liked all the talk of sweets, and I always love reading about Nocturne Falls and all of its stores and people.
