Fall is upon us. There is a chill in the air. The days are shorter, the nights longer, and the shadows take on lives of their own when the wind blows. Time to curl up in your favorite chair with a blanket, a warming drink, the pets and a good book. We want to keep that delicious chill alive, so we're looking for atmospheric, seasonal tales of fear. Quiet horror. Here is a link with 31 suggestions for your reading pleasure.

https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Choose however many you like, or make a list of your own.

Feel free to share your choices with the group, exchange recs, and chat.

Challenge begins on September 23rd.

That's odd.

I think it's fixed now.

message 5: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 71 comments Ooh Jon, this is exciting! Count me in! I'm going to try and read as many as possible of those that I haven't read.

message 6: by Kate (new)

Kate | 3525 comments Thanks, Jon.

I think I'll manage to do 2/3 of these as they would fit in with my challenges.

Definitely Something Wicked This Way Comes (Green Town, #2) by Ray Bradbury and Bad Apples Five Slices of Halloween Horror by Edward Lorn and perhaps Dead Leaves 8 Tales from the Witching Season by Kealan Patrick Burke if I have time.

Thanks for posting this Jon. :)

message 7: by Scot (new)

Scot | 639 comments I have just finished Bad Apples: Five Slices of Halloween Horror, and I'm looking for a recommendation or two from the list. Anyone have one?
I was thinking about reading Dark Harvest.

message 8: by Char (last edited Sep 22, 2014 07:12AM) (new)

Char | 17457 comments Scot, The Elementals was fantastic! Also, Something Wicked This Way Comes kicked butt.
I thought Dark Harvest was just okay.

Have you read James Newman's The Wicked?

message 9: by Char (new)

Char | 17457 comments I'm going to choose 2 books to do, because I have some other obligations in October. So, those two will be:

Bad Apples: Five Slices of Halloween Horror and Falling Angel.

Thanks for doing this, Jon!

message 10: by Bill (new)

Bill (shiftyj1) | 4891 comments Nice list, Jon! I am going to try and get to a few of these.

message 11: by Kenneth (new)

Kenneth (kennethc) | 6 comments What? No Harvest Home by Thomas Tryon ?

message 12: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 12043 comments Mod
Nope.

But if that's your pick, go for it.

message 13: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 71 comments Kenneth, I've just added that too!! Got a lot of books to read, I can't wait!!!

message 14: by Char (new)

Char | 17457 comments Harvest Home was awesome. If I hadn't already read it, it would be on my challenge right now. :)

I hope everyone finds something that will become their favorite seasonal read.
If folks need a little more help, I wouldn't mind posting more suggestions.

message 16: by Josh (new)

Josh I'll be reading Bad Apples soon. Coincidentally, but hey, now I've got people to talk about it with. :)

All of the authors hang out around here too, so that's always cool.

That is cool. I need to look through some old topics and kind of acclimate myself to the group.

message 19: by Char (new)

Char | 17457 comments If you need any help finding anything, or help with anything at all, let me know. :)

I did read your review in Dark Discoveries #28 last night. Well done, sir!

message 20: by Josh (last edited Sep 22, 2014 11:41AM) (new)

Josh Thanks, Charlene. Glad you thought so. :) I'll be sure to ask if anything comes up. Most likely I'll just be posting here and there, reanimating dead topics, that kind of thing...

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 955 comments Fall is definitely my favorite time of year. Sadly Florida doesn't give a 'true fall' but it's the best time of the year regardless, depending on how cool it gets. Like your description of it - makes me want to head home and start reading on the new couch already.

I already had some horror books planned for October - Halloween Man from Douglas Clegg and The Manse are two I had planned already, so I'll take part of the two on the list.

OK. Wicked is a definite because one can never digest enough JN. I will have to give the list another look and figure out a second book.

Josh, you joined a great group. HA is a fun place to kill some time. Char is absolutely right about the authors and they are all great guys.

message 27: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 964 comments Scot, Something Wicked This Way Comes is a wonderful book. I have read it several times. Bradbury is a Halloween fixture in my house.

message 28: by Manuel (new)

Manuel I'd love to join the Challenge!

Is it possible to read other horror themed books for my challenge too? :)

message 29: by Esme (last edited Oct 31, 2014 12:00PM) (new)

Esme | 7 comments Thanks for the challenge, Jon.

I'm going to read 5 4 books on my TBR list:

Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury The Children's Hour by Douglas Clegg The Cormorant by Stephen Gregory Cold Skin by Albert Sánchez Piñol

Manuel, the list is full of some suggestions to get readers started. Feel free to read anything you want towards the challenge and recommend anything you choose for youeself. It may spark some interest from others.

Amanda | 71 comments I think I'm going to try and read as many as possible. Going to struggle with getting a few. Started yesterday and read The Halloween Tree, and now onto Usher's Passing. This challenge will help me read a lot of books that gave been on my tbr for a while!

that's exactly what I was thinking too Amanda!

message 37: by Tom (new)

message 38: by Char (new)

Char | 17457 comments You don't have to, Tom, but it definitely helps. Since The Fall of the House of Usher is a short story, I do recommend reading it first.

message 39: by Tom (new)

Tom | 340 comments Thanks Charlene. I am going to read that next.

message 40: by Robert (new)

Robert Mingee (robertmingee) | 776 comments Thanks, Jon, great list! There are some books here I definitely want to read, and I'm really hoping to do a lot of October reading this year - I'm years behind on the Earthling Halloween series, even though I have them all.

I had never looked at the summary of Usher's Passing, even though I bought the ebook on sale a while back. Definitely sounds like something I'd like.

message 41: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Sandberg (lisasandberg) | 168 comments Great list, some of which are already on my TBR. :)

message 42: by Manuel (new)

Manuel I'm thinking about adding Gods of The Nowhere: A Novel of Halloween to my list. Has anyone read it?

message 43: by Latasha (new)

Latasha (latasha513) | 11970 comments Mod
I have not but it's on my to read list as well.

message 44: by Michael (new)

Michael Jensen (michaeljensen) I'm going to read Dark Harvest, Out, and Cold Skin. Thanks for the suggestion on the last one, Esme!

Thanks! I'll also be reading The Troop but Dark Harvest looked too interesting to resist.

message 47: by Char (new)

Char | 17457 comments The Troop was a LOT of fun. I hope you enjoy it! :)
