The 'Read-Whatever-You-Want' Challenge

This will be a team reading challenge which will run from September 1st 2019 to September 30th 2019. Results will be announced on October 1st-2nd 2019.

To complete this challenge, participants will be split into teams. Each team will read books of their own choice (which fit the challenge guidelines), and points will be awarded based on the length of the book, and whether you have buddy-read your book.
You may also choose to take part in this challenge as a solo participant ☺

How it works:

The idea of this challenge is to sit-back, relax, and read whatever you want ☺

What this means:
* You may read fiction/non-fiction/graphic novels/poetry/middle-grade books.
(there are still different points scores for some types of book as detailed below)
* You may re-read books, irrespective of how long it has been since you last read the book.

*****Please note, I am trialling a new points scoring system this month, so please check message 4 below so that you know what to expect*****

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90956 comments Mod

Rules/Guidelines:

* Books must be read between the 1st of September and the 30th of September inclusive. Books started before September may be used, but you will only earn points for pages read in September. Please let us know how many pages you have read in September when posting your review.

* Books must be at least 50 pages long, without illustrations/photographs/diagrams etc.
-- 75 pages minimum for middle-grade and children's books.
-- 150 pages minimum for poetry, books written in verse, manga/graphic novels, books which have some illustrations, and plays.
-- Books which are mainly illustrations, such as some children's books, picture books, and some non-fiction books etc. cannot be used as part of this challenge.

* Middle-grade, and children's books without illustrations/photographs will earn 1 point for every 75 pages due to the reduced word count. This applies to all books which are tagged 'middle-grade' or 'children's' more times than they are tagged YA. This includes Goosebumps books, The Wind in the Willows, the Magisterium series, and The Secret Garden to name a few.

* Books which are illustrated or have photographs will receive 1 point for every 150 pages. If your book has an illustrator listed or is tagged 'illustrated', then it will fall into this category. This includes books such as The Spiderwick Chronicles, A Series of Unfortunate Events, books by Roald Dahl, Doll Bones, Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children Series, A Monster Calls, The Little Prince, and Charlotte's Web to name a few.

* Manga, graphic novels, plays, poetry, and books written in verse will receive 1 point for every 150 pages due to reduced word count. If your book is tagged 'Sequential Art', 'Graphic Novels', 'Comics', 'Manga', 'Poetry', 'Verse', 'Play', or words to that effect, then it will fall into this category.

* If your poetry book or graphic novel does not meet the minimum page count, we will allow you to add together the page counts of 2 or more books to make it to the minimum page count. Books must be posted at the same time, and must be less than 150 pages each.

* If you are reading novellas which are less than 50 pages long, you may also add together the page counts of one or more novellas of less than 50 pages, to get to the minimum page count of 50 pages. Books must be posted at the same time.

* You are welcome to read physical books, ebooks, and audiobooks for this challenge, and you are also welcome to read in any language as long as you provide us with an English translation of your review/updates either as part of your review, on your team's review thread, or by personal message to myself.

* If for any reason you are unable to publish your review on Goodreads, it can also be sent to myself via personal message. Please continue to post on your team's review thread as normal, stating 'review sent to Sarah by personal message' after 'Review:'.

* Re-reads are allowed in this challenge, irrespective of how long it has been since you last read the book. You will need to write a new review or updates though please. We recommend that you post on your review '2019 re-read', or something to that effect so that we can easily see what your new review is.

*A review or 4 detailed updates will be required for each book read.

*Buddy reads must have a minimum of 4 comments to count, and comments must be detailed, and about the book. We also expect you to discuss the book with your buddies, not just post updates and leave.

* Buddy reads must take place within this group (YA Buddy Readers' Corner ♥) to gain the extra points. You can see which buddy reads are already planned each month here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

* You should not start a buddy read more than 7 days before the start date, or more than 14 days after the start date, or the last comment on the thread, whichever is later. If you do need to change the date, check with your buddy as they may also be able to start early/late with you.

* Group Buddy Reads can be joined to earn buddy read points, but only GBRs for September 2019 will count.

* If you are using a 'series' buddy read thread, it is still expected that you will be reading the same book in the series as your buddy, at roughly the same time. If a buddy read thread is reset for book 4 in a series, then it is expected that people will be reading from book 4, and if updates are posted for books 1, 2, or 3 they will not be counted as you do not have a buddy reading those books with you.

* If you are joining a series buddy read thread, and it is more than 14 days since anybody else on the thread finished the book that you're reading, then the buddy read will not count.

* Please post the link to your buddy read along with the book you are reading and the start date on the 'Planned Buddy Reads' list for the correct month - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... If you continually schedule buddy reads and fail to post them on the planned buddy reads thread for the correct month, then we won't continue to give buddy read points. It is important that buddy reads are posted on the planned buddy reads list so that everyone is given the opportunity to join.

* There are no set books which need to be read, any book which fits within the rules will count, so books can be chosen by the reader. Please check with us before reading if you are unsure whether your book counts or not.

* Bonus points will be given as detailed in the 'points' section below.

* Higher page count editions may be used when claiming points for pages, but page counts for iphone/ibook editions will not be accepted, and neither will page counts for audiobook editions, or 'flipback' or dwarsligger editions, or other 'mini' editions (you are still welcome to read in these formats, but must use a different page count). We will also not accept a page count which is more than double the next highest for that book. (ie: if there are 4 editions at 200 pages, and 1 edition at 2200 pages, we would not accept the 2200 page edition as it is more than double the next highest at 200 pages.)

* We request that you leave us a link to the edition with the page count that you are using if the book has multiple editions with different page counts.

* Please do not go back and alter posts once they have been counted, if you need to make a change, please make a new post on your team's review thread, with a link to your original post, and then explain the change, for example; a higher page count edition has been found, or a buddy read needs to be added, and please include links.

* We will be tracking the number of books that people are reading, to see whether they are reading the minimum number of books required for the level of team that they are on. If over a period of several months you are consistently reading less than the required number of books, we will ask you to move to a lower level of team, or go solo. This is because it is unfair to other team members if you continue to sign up for a medium/serious team, yet are only reading 2 books a month.

* Our regular challenge rules can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

*** If you are not sure if your book counts, please ask before you read it. Questions can be posted on this thread, or sent by personal message to myself.***

*****Please note, I am trialling a new points scoring system this month, please see below*****

Points :

Books - *1 point per 50 pages*

*50 - 99 pages = 1 points
*100 - 149 pages = 2 point
*150 - 199 pages = 3 points
*200 - 249 pages = 4 points
*250-299 pages = 5 points
*300 - 349 pages = 6 points
*350 - 399 pages = 7 points
*400 - 449 pages = 8 points
*450 - 499 pages = 9 points
*500 - 549 pages = 10 points
*550 - 599 pages = 11 points
*600+ pages = 12 points
(maximum of 12 points per book)

Middle-grade/children's books (without illustrations) - *1 point per 75 pages*

*75 - 149 pages = 1 points
*150 - 224 pages = 2 point
*225 - 299 pages = 3 points
*300 - 374 pages = 4 points
*375 -449 pages = 5 points
*450 - 524 pages = 6 points
*525 - 599 pages = 7 points
*600+ pages = 8 points
(maximum of 8 points per book)

Graphic novels/manga/poetry/plays/books written in verse/books which have some illustrations - *1 point per 150 pages*

*150-299 pages = 1 points
*300 - 449 pages = 2 point
*450 - 599 pages = 3 points
*600+ pages = 4 points
(maximum of 4 points per book)

* Buddy reads DOUBLE your points score for pages, so a 300 page book + buddy read = 12 points. 600 page book + buddy read = 24 points. (Bonus points for buddy reads will only be given if the buddy read has taken place in our group.)

*Mods will keep track of each teams points, using the following system -

Team Name:

__________|_Books_|_Buddy_|__Page____|__Total
__________|_Read__|_Reads_|__Points__|

Name______|___0___|___0___|_____0____|_____0
Name______|___0___|___0___|_____0____|_____0

Bonus Points_____________________________+00

Team______|___0___|___0___|_____0____|_____0

Please note - we will be tracking how many books you have read, but you will not receive points for this column. This is to allow us to see whether you are reading the minimum number of books required for the level of team that you have requested to be on. You will receive a '1' for every book over 100 pages long, or for every 300 pages of graphic novels, poetry etc, that you have read. If you consistently ask to be on a Serious or Medium team without reading the minimum number of books, you may be asked to drop down to a lower level team.

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90956 comments Mod

This challenge will be a team challenge. When signing up please let us know if you want to join a 'Serious' team (reading 12 books or more each), a 'Medium' team (reading 8-12 books each) or a 'Just for fun' team (reading any number of books each).

***Please only sign up for a 'Serious' or 'Medium' team if you are able to read the minimum number of books for that level of team, so 3 books a week for Serious, and 2 books a week for Medium.

This means that so far this year someone in Serious would have read at least 87 books, and someone in Medium would have read between 58 and 87 books.***

You may also sign up as a solo participant, and will compete against your other solo competitors, as well as those people in teams. An individual leaderboard will be published at the end of the challenge.

Teams should be posted by August 25th at the latest. If you wish to join a 'Serious' or 'Medium' team, please sign up as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. You may join as a solo player, or join a fun team (where possible) at any time.

Thank you! ☺

Q - Just a few questions 😁. So, I started a buddy read with Sawkill girls in August, but I haven’t gotten very far and won’t. Will it be okay for me to restart the boom September 1 and still use that buddy read? September one will be 13 days from the last comment and I plan to read the whole book that day and respond to other comments.

Also, Saving June by Hannah Harrington was a group buddy read in July but no one joined. Is is okay if I request it again for September buddy reads even though it was technically a group read?

A - yes it's fine to restart Sawkill girls as it will be less than 14 days since the thread was last commented on ☺ For Saving June you'd have to find a new buddy as the GBR threads are dead when you get to the next month. If you find a buddy though just comment on the planned buddy reads for September and I'll reset the thread ☺

Q - Sarah with the manga do we still have to divide by 3 to give you an accurate page count or does the new page count make from where we dont gotta do that?

A - if you just post the highest page count, we'll divide it by 150 to work out how many points it will be ☺

Q - Hii, I have a query. I'm currently reading Children's Writers' and Artists' Yearbook 2019 (it won't load to add the book as a link right now). The book has over 70 essays inside it. Mainly, though, it has pages and pages of agents contacts, which I'll be going through but not actually reading. It also also has some areas I won't be reading at all. I obviously don't want to count the pages I won't be reading or just flipping through, but can I count a portion of the novel (the page count for the essays) or is it best not to count it at all, for this challenge?

A - Hi, just post it the same way you would a DNF or a book that was only partially read this month, so just let us know how many pages you read this month when you post your review ☺

Q - Question regarding buddy reads. If we partake in one that has been requested and reset but the others who were supposed to participate fail to or fail to post more than one time, do we still get credit for it? Just curious if I should bother continuing to post in one that the other person seems to have decided against!

A - Yes, the BR still counts. Even if the other person(s) is unable to participate.

A - Yes, as long as it was originally planned with a buddy, we will count it ☺

Q - Question: I am buddy reading IT but I am doubting I will be able to finish. Can I get page points for what I read this month and more if I have to continue into next month? And how would that work being a BR? I am trying but it is soooo long and I don't want to hurt my team by not reading my 8 books due to this.

A - @Jamie: Yes you can get page + BR points for that you read this month, and the same for next month. Just type out a review (doesn't need to be linked, just type it on the page so you don't need to mark the book as finished) and then link the pages and BR thread as usual, just saying how many pages you read each month so we can apportion the points :)

A - I just want to point out that you will have to make 4 buddy read comments about the book in both this month AND next month to get buddy read points both times. If you make buddy read comments in September, but not in October, then you will only earn the buddy read points for September. You also have to write a new review if you finish in October with new details as well x

Q - Hi, I have a question about this rule: " If you are reading novellas which are less than 50 pages long, you may also add together the page counts of one or more novellas of less than 50 pages, to get to the minimum page count of 50 pages. Books must be posted at the same time. "

If I read a short story collection where all the stories are separate books in Goodreads, can I add them up and get points for the whole thing? Specifically, I'm talking about the Forward Collection (https://www.goodreads.com/series/2708...). All the books together have a total of 277 pages, but if I combine them to pairs that have 50+ pages each, I only get 4 pairs, which would be a point less. So I was wondering if I could get points for the overall page count or not :)

A - If you read the whole book then yes you would just count the one combined edition :)

A - Are these novellas actually available as one book? I can only find them available as individual novellas, and if they're not actually available to buy as one book with one ISBN, then we would only be able to count them as the individual novellas x

Q - So can we add novellas and graphic novels togather to make 300 pages or do you perfer we keep graphic novels with graphic novels and novellas with novellas? I hope this all makes sense.

A - You can add novellas and graphic novels together, as long as novellas are less than 50 pages long, and graphic novels are less than 150 pages long. That's points-wise. Books-read wise, you can add together novellas less than 100 pages long, and graphic novels less than 300 pages long, to get a 1 in the books read column. Does that help?

It doesn't really matter if you want to add novellas and graphic novels together as long as they meet the minimum page counts I just said ☺ You don't have to keep them seperate ☺

Q - 1. Do I have until 11:59 pm my time to post reviews on the last day of the month? Wasn't sure how that works being in all different time zones..

A we run the challenges on Goodreads time zone, which is PST. All challenges officially start and finish on PST, but we do allow people to start early if they are on an earlier time zone, as long as they finish on their own time zone too.

As for finishing, the challenge ends on PST, and any reviews posted after that time won't be counted. This means that you can finish early, but you cannot finish late.

Q - 2. If I am halfway through any books at the end of the month can I post still for those pages to count? How does that work as far as posting a review and any buddy reads that were going on?

A - Pages read of books that aren't finished by the end of the month, can be used to claim points. You can choose to write either a mini review the same way you'd normally post a review, you can write a mini review on your team review thread, or you can submit status updates. For buddy reads we still need to see detailed comments, although we will give a bit of wiggle room on how many comments. The minimum would be 2, but if you've read more than 100 pages we would expect more.

Q - So for A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #2) by Sarah J. Maas that we have set up for the first should we use the separate thread for it or can we continue using the series read along considering thats where we set the BR up?

A - Any active series threads, and any series threads already added to the calendar can continue to be used until November 1st. Any that are not active, or have not been added to the October Calendar cannot be used for buddy read points from Octboer 1st x
