I have a copy of Project Hail Mary checked out. I'm excited to read it and I love the cover. I'm going to do my best attempt at Sci-Fi September. I don't read much sci-fi, so we shall see how this month goes.

419. It's Sci-Fi September! Are you participating? If so, what do you plan on reading?

message 1504: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments No, I don't plan on participating. I didn't even know that was a thing.

Maybe! I wasn't aware that was a thing either. I think the only Sci-Fi's I've read are the Star Wars movie novelizations. Though I have a few Timothy Zahn and Branden Sanderson's on my TBR.

421. What was the last book you read out of your comfort zone that you ended up really enjoying?

Many people are participating in sci-fi September within the online book community. I don't read sci-fi very much because the genre seems a bit intimidating to me. However, I saw a friend's rave review about A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers and decided to give it a try. It's a short novella, a total of 147 pages. I thought it would be a great opportunity to participate in sci-fi September and slowly wade into the science fiction genre. I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least. I ended up really loving this book. The only "complaint" that I had was that there wasn't much of a plot, but it's also a novella. What made me fall in love with this book was the writing and the characters. I'm excited to continue on with this series and other work from this author.

Jumanji by Chris Van Allsburg, a children's book. I never read children's books, but this was the book the movie was based on so I was curious. It turned out to be quite good.

message 1514: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments Caste by Isabel Wilkerson. I don't typically read nonfiction, but that book was really good. I learned a lot about the system that I didn't learn in school. It's easy to read and digest. I highly recommend it.

Surprisingly The Maiden's and The Silent Patient. I've not read any adult mystery genre because I never found a title that caught my eye and wasn't a bad Sherlock Holmes remake. (Tried a Tom Clancy once, not a mistake i'll make again.) But both these stories were so awesome, I added The Maidens to my book collection at home and i've been keeping an eye out for more mystery genre's I might enjoy.

If you enjoyed those I could offer up some more thriller recommendations. The Tom Clancy you mentioned is more of a mystery genre. The Maiden and The Silent Patient are more of a thriller. I don't read many mysteries, but thrillers are my jam!

422. How did you get into reading? Was there a specific book or series that got you into reading?

message 1518: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments I got into reading while working at a data entry job. I listened to the audiobook for The Alchemist.

message 1519: by Debra Diggs (last edited Sep 08, 2021 06:35PM) (new)

Debra Diggs | 2445 comments My parents were readers. Especially my Dad. My Mom took us to the library all the time. When I was young, I remember enjoying A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle. I also enjoyed Charlotte's Web by E.B. White.

I don't remember specifically. I always enjoyed reading in elementary school and the school librarian at Hunter Hills would help me pick out books I might like, she got me started on The Magic Treehouse series by Mary Pope Osbourn and those were my first chapter books I loved, I read in school mainly to avoid socializing lol but it became an addiction soon enough.

message 1539: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (estewart399_lcpl) | 601 comments Krystyna wrote: "427. What makes you decide to buy a book?"

If I love it and think it's something i'll reread. I rent it out from the library first and then ill decide whether or not its something i want to add to my collection

message 1540: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 372 comments If it gets good WOM reviews by friends w/ similar reading skills. If the cover art or blurb pique my interest. There are also a number of auto-buy authors for me that I will pre-order releases for at first opportunity.

message 1541: by Debra Diggs (new)

Debra Diggs | 2445 comments It could be the story line, the cover, the author, next in series or something else that strikes my fancy. Of course, I always check the library first.

maybe that if something embarrassing happens to one of the characters I get second hand embarrassment and I have to cringe and close the book for a little while lol
