For this challenge, we are tackling our TBR piles and TBW lists collectively. Choose a book or books that have been adapted for either a television series, movie, limited series, or streaming feature. Read the book and then watch the adaptation. Tell us how many book/adaptation combos you will be reading/watching for this challenge. For series with multiple seasons, you do not have to watch all the seasons (but feel free to binge away) - just let us know how many episodes you intend to watch for the challenge. Happy reading and viewing!

Thanks to SarahKat for the idea behind this challenge and volunteering to lead!

Sunny | 2311 comments I'm in for four.

It's been around 30 or so years since I last read Sherlock Holmes, so I've decided to tackle both of these:

A Study In Scarlet/The Hound of the Baskervilles

I'll be watching The Sherlock Episodes: A Study in Pink and The Hounds of Baskerville

I end up reading P.D. James once a year and so I'll add another to this year:

Shroud For a Nightingale

And will be watching the 1984 television miniseries starring Roy Marsden as Dalgliesh. It's been a few years since I saw this one.

Finally, I'll read a couple of Morse books:

This one is on my TBR list:

Death is Now My Neighbour

And I read this one last year and won't mind reading it again:

The Remorseful Day

I will be watching the episodes from the Morse series starring John Thaw. I've not seen either episode and am looking forward to watching them.

Duration: 1 July - 30 September 2019

4 of 6 as of September 1! :)
One more than I originally thought I would complete!

I started out with the first 3 and then added #4-#6 due to other challenges, etc., and am calling it quits on this one as of September 28.

1) I was planning to read The Silver Linings Playbook and watch the movie.

✔️2) The Handmaid's Tale and watch an episode of the Hulu adaptation. Read September 27--5/5 stars.
The book proved to be a much better read than I expected, however, the Hulu adaptation (I watched Season 1, Episode 1.) reminded me why I don't have TV in my house. Ugh. It was almost painful. I would much rather be reading...

3) A Dog's Way Home and watch the movie
I LOVE Cameron's writing!

✔️4) Wonder Read July 21--5/5 stars
Watched the movie July 21--5/5 stars. I really liked the movie adaptation. It seemed to follow the book very well.

✔️5) A Raisin in the Sun Read August 11--5/5 stars
Watched the movie August 11--5/5 stars!
Absolutely a literary masterpiece and the movie! Sidney Poitier! Also a masterpiece!

✔️6) Flowers for Algernon Read September 1--5/5 stars
Watched the movie September 1--3/5 stars. I'm really disappointed that they didn't follow the book better. This movie adaptation felt more like a cartoon and I'm sooooo glad I read the book first!

SarahKat | 6224 comments Welcome Sunny and Lynn!

I'm trying for 4 separate books/shows.

The Flash (11 episodes) + 1 Flash comic
Gotham (9 episodes) + 5 Batman comics
11/22/63 (at least 1 episode) + the book

TBD- Possibly Outlander + Drums of Autumn or another comic/show combo

Can you tell I have some catching-up with my shows to do? :)

Catka | 270 comments Hi, sign me up for 5 please.

1/5 Princess Bride - movie waaay better than the book
2/5 War and Peace - book better than this Soviet adaptation
3/5 Good Omens - watched the show first then re-read the book (for the third time). It seems to be getting better with each re-reading and I really enjoyed the visual side the TV show added to it.
4/5 The Portrait of a Lady - listened to the audiobook and then watched the movie with Nicole Kidman and John Malkovich. Book was better, movie was too shallow and strangely sexual
4,5/5 - I watched a movie called The Adjustment Bureau, which had quite an interesting premise (the "Fate" ruling human lives and the possibility/impossibility to break it), so I looked up whether it was based on a book. It wasn't, but it was based by a short story called The Adjustment Team by Philip K. Dick. They only took the idea from the story and set it to the present time and added the chase for the perfect love to it. Still an interesting watch/read.
5/5: Whisky Galore - read the book and watched the movie, both are ok, if you like whisky and/or Scotland, even better.

Catka | 270 comments update msg 33:

2/5 War and Peace - book better than this Soviet adaptation
the movie (in several parts) was over-dramatic, pathetic, artsy to the point of boredom, the characters were too flat, some of the moderated, like the Bolkonski Father, who was much more despotic and crazy in the book. It put too much focus on Pierre Bezuchov, probably because he was played by the director himself, who also participated on the script. There was this weird scene where he wanders around the battleground of Borodino in a white frock coat and top hat looking much hapless and useless like the Discworld first tourist Twoflower.

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just completed my first book for this challenge - The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. I'm incredibly impressed that the author could portray a unique character like Charlie, who today would possibly be diagnosed on the spectrum, and still portray the quintessential high school experience. It's also further proof that high school doesn't really change, just the fashion and technology. I loved the writing. My only criticism was that I wanted to know to whom Charlie was writing. Definitely worth reading! 4.5 stars

Waiting on DVD to arrive from Netflix (yes, I still have an old school subscription and it's not available streaming:)).

How did you like the TV series? I just watched it and missed something and am not sure exactly what it was (except for (view spoiler)) so I am rereading the book now. Other than that, I quite liked it, it was good to get visuals to what I imagined only.

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just watched the miniseries The ABC Murders with John Malkovich and Rupert Grant (a.k.a. Ron Weasley). That was a mind bender when I realized who he was all grown-up! I'm not sure Ms. Christie would have appreciated the adaptation. They took the entire story into an incredibly dark place, which is saying something for a murder mystery. Rather odd, but it is John Malkovich playing Hercule Poirot. I'd give it 3.5 stars. Book was way better!

I finished the Sherlock Holmes book a few weeks back, but didn't get around to watching the corresponding episodes of Sherlock, ( A Study In Pink and The Hounds of Baskerville), until this week ( Mon). I had plenty of time in my schedule; I just couldn't find the mood for watching.

I enjoyed reading the stories again after all these years; and feel I have a better appreciation of them as an adult than I did when I was a teenager. In fact, I probably skimmed over (view spoiler) of A Study In Scarlet when I was younger. Not really caring all that much about that much of a detailed background and finding it a bit boring, stuck in the middle of a book/story featuring Sherlock Holmes. I'm still not sure that it couldn't have been handled differently, making the over-all story better, but Doyle handled it the way he saw fit; and one can not deny that he is a good story teller.

I had no problems with the changing around of the plots to fit the modern day version of things in the adaptations for Sherlock. I found them to be amusing in some instances and thought they were very well done.
