I'd really like to read the Hunger Games trilogy, if only because so many of my students are reading/have read it and I like to be able to talk books with them!

I'm glad I read the Hunger Games when they had it one day at the library. Since I returned it has been always been checked out.
We received a belated Chanukah package from my sister in the mail today, and she bought me Maus I: My Father Bleeds History and Maus II: And Here My Troubles Began, which I've been meaning to read for ages, so I'm very excited about that! She bought my husband Ready Player One, which I hadn't heard of but it looks very interesting and I'll probably read it when he's done.

1. The Einstein Intersection by Samuel R. Delany (Yay! I'm very excited to finally get a copy of this one.)
2. The Merro Tree by Katie Waitman (I am terribly psyched about this, as it's not always an easy book to find. I have been stalking a copy for months, and I've heard nothing but fantastic things about it.)
3. The Vet's Daughter by Barbara Comyns (I put this author on my TBR years ago yet have never read anything by her after all this time. Recently, I saw an interview librarian queen Nancy Pearl did with China Miéville - one of the best interviews with him I've seen yet, available online here: Book Lust with Nancy Pearl, Featuring China Miéville - and he mentioned this book and author when talking about authors he's recently discovered and is loving. The other author he's currently into is Michael Cisco, FYI.)
4. Map of Dreams by M. Rickert (This is another I've been lusting after for a while. It's a collection of short stories themed around dreams.)
5. The Pillow Book by Sei Shōnagon (This is one of my favorite books ever, and I decided I must finally replace the copy I lent and never got back.)
I'm excited, as other than Kindle freebies and one or two Kindle $.99 titles, these are the first books I've purchased for myself since April, 2011. I've been trying to support the library for my reading needs, as well as read books I already own.

[book:The Merro Tree is AWESOME! I got a battered used paperback from Amazon a long while back.

That's what I ended up doing, as well - $.50 + shipping, in (supposedly) "Good" condition. We shall see re: the condition, but as long as the book's intact, you can hardly beat that price! (I always get a bit of a twitch when I pay $1 or less for a book and $3.99 for shipping, but considering the alternative of not reading the book at all, I suppose it's a necessary quirk of book procurement.)

Yeah, I hate when one has to pay more for shipping than the actual item.

I was so naughty and blew my resolution at Thriftbooks christmas sale! So much for TBR pile decimation...:S
Fantasy wise:
Jhereg
Paladin of Souls
By the Mountain Bound
Blood and Iron
Sci-fi:
The Uplift War
Startide Rising
The Children of Men
Lord of Light
A Talent for War
I am Legend
I am now not allowed to buy books until March. Grrr...

Ah, but you were virtuous by recycling used books, and Thriftbooks donates a lot of their profits to various literacy charities, as well as helping libraries fund themselves by selling their old/overstock through them, and all their packaging is "green", thus even less negative impact comes from your purchase than buying somewhere else. Hence, one might say that you made a holiday charitable contribution to literacy and libraries and took in some great books that needed a new home. Surely, in the grand scheme of things, this balances the scales somewhat... (No, I don't work for Thriftbooks! I'm just an appreciator and am good at justifying book purchases. ;))
And you have so many great new reads to get you through to March! Win-win! :D

and they are all pretty much classics, too. So, must-reads.
That being said, I had not heard of this pillow book...and now have something else on my wishlist! lol

So, have you read Sundiver yet? Even thought its the first book of the uplift trilogy, it really could be read as a standalone as it was intended to when it was written.

I picked up
Falling to Earth: An Apollo 15 Astronaut's Journey to the Moon

They have "Good" quality used copies on Amazon.co.uk, as well, for £2.64 and up (plus standard shipping.) So it is, at least, a reasonably feasible possibility if/when you lift your moratorium on buying books. :)

Is there a new version?
I started Mortal Causes after reading it on a link to things to see in Edinburgh. Love Scotland. Also got Seabiscuit: An American Legend which I've had as a sample on my Nook forever. Also Jane Was Here, Blood Meridian and The World As It Is: Dispatches on the Myth of Human Progress. Oh! And Carol Berg's new book, The Daemon Prism.
Just going crazy getting things on my Nook - am having surgery tomorrow and hope to get a lot of reading done in recovery.

Songs from the Seashell Archives, Volume 1
The Incorporated Knight
Cup of Clay
Sung in Shadow
The Stress of Her Regard

Yeah, I had the same reaction to The Hunger Games -- plus I have too many other, more interesting-sounding novels to read.

I read this last spring. Great book! Love the slow build with the mystery.

Good to know. I'm liking it so far.

So I went on a little bit of a bender

Thanks. Am feeling pretty good but not quite up to snuff.
I picked up a pretty hefty paperback, Partners In Necessity, which contains the first 3 Liaden books. I've never read any of these and decided I could read the first three and see if I like them enough to look for more. Won't be reading them any time soon, but it was a good deal and there's room on the shelf.

I've had that for a while, have only read the first one. It was good, and I need to get back to it. It is a hefty sized book!

As much as I like Murakami, I have still not read The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. I want to to it sometime this year, but 1Q84 is up first, probably in the second half of February.

Thanks! Hope you enjoy 1Q84, which I found to be much better book than The Wind-up Bird Chronicle.

The Crippled God
The Victorious Opposition
The Oriental Casebook of Sherlock Holmes: Nine Adventures from the Lost Years

That's an awesome buy. That's about 20 books, isn't it? Have you read them all before? It's one of our favorite series. We read them in published order, but I also did a re-read in chronological order.

I only have read the first five books, and its more about 15 novels.

I also just got two C.J. Cherryh, the fourth book in the Foreigner series, Precursor along with Alternate Realities last week.

I have to say I think the reasons that turn people away from the series is that its not written in chronological order at all or with any one character or story line. People just can't connect to something that changes story line and timeline every two books or so.

Coyote Blue
Changeless
Nightlife
Ender's Game

Oh, I dearly love Thriftbooks. I love their reasonable prices, local distribution center, recycled & minimal packaging, and "percentage of profits go to literacy charities" aspects. They are my favorite online place for used books. (Also: Christopher Moore and Salman Rushdie...Your book haul is officially awesome. ;) )

LOL

That might just be one of the things I like best about the series. Finding the inaccuracies in the histories & seeing the world through different characters is fun & keeps the series fresh. While it jumps around in time, the reader's depth of knowledge of the 'magic' grows logically when it is read in published order. Of course, read once that way, a chronological re-read gives another perspective.

The Secret of Bigfoot Pass
While standing in line to pay for it I found this
The Essential Ellison: A 50 Year Retrospective
Today I was into work so I stopped into Bakka and picked up

I read the first one and it was ok, but I also don't like the premise. Don't plan to read the rest - or see the movie.
