Bought the entire Wasteland of Flint trilogy - pretty good, but left some unanswered questions - and another Benjamin January by Barbara Hambly.

Not fantasy. A free man in New Orleans in 1800's. Detective stories. Very good.
It was a booking weekend for me--4 used book stores and LOTS of books, including a copy of this month's BOTM, City of Bones. My project for this afternoon is to enter them in the Library spreadsheet and shelve them...

Probably the best single book covering the beginning of the First World War and the amazing blunders by all the nations involved that created a four year stalemate.
Was holiday shopping and got seduced by free shipping and low prices, bought about 20 books (mostly used) for myself--now just waiting for them to arrive. Will update when I have the titles in front of me.
Wow, how lovely and Christmasy. And also, how I like to do Christmas shopping, I bought myself new gloves, dressing gown whilst getting something for mum.

This looks interesting--I've read several novels of ancient Ireland. Might have to add this to my "looking for" list.

I too added Bending the Boyne: A novel of ancient Ireland to my list! Bronze age Ireland isn't so frequently depicted.
I just picked up a few used books from Shara at Calico Reaction - she's clearing out her shelves to make room for her new books and selling a bunch of the old stuff she didn't want anymore. These arrived today:
Interfictions: An Anthology of Interstitial Writing
Darwin's Radio
Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang
and In Cold Blood
not that I'll have time to read any of them anytime soon, but I'm looking forward to all of them when I do get to them!

My first box of books arrived and it was mostly full of Barbara Hambly books, with one C J Cherryh, also The Sea Thy Mistress, Dreaming the Serpent Spear, and The Solaris Book of New Fantasy.
What Cherryh book did you get? Have you read any others besides Fortress? I'm half way through Fortress of Ice, liking Otter.

I've read Cherryh's Fortress series (which I liked a lot) and her trilogy based on Russian folktales (which I didn't care for at all). I'm collecting the Foreigner books and the one I just got is Destroyer. I have yet to read any of them yet.
I also got the 3 books in Dave Duncan's "The Great Game" trilogy. They came yesterday.

It's been a long time since I've read that one, but I remember it being a lot of fun. My recollections of it are vague though.

I only read the first Foreigner book, for our discussion a few months ago, but I loved it and definitely intend on finishing the series...someday...
The Foreigner series I one that I pre-order, read in a few days and then want more. Most all of Cherryh is like that for me.
Helen wrote: "Finished the Fortress series today, enjoyed it alot."Yes, I love that one. Hope she writes another one of these days.
I'd like another too. I'd like to find out who/what the evil thing was in book 4 that seemed bigger than Hasufin.

Nice, hope you enjoy all the books, especially The Wind Up Bird Chronicles.
I emptied out my book jar (yes, I have a change jar that's earmarked specifically for buying books...I know you all understand!) into the Coinstar machine for an Amazon gift card the other day and my goodies just arrived:
-Invader and Inheritor by Cherryh - can't wait to continue the Foreigner series
-CryoBurn, which is most definitely going to be my next read when I finish my current book!
-The Mind's Eye by Oliver Sacks - his stuff is fascinating!
-and What Chefs Feed Their Kids: Recipes and Techniques for Cultivating a Love of Good Food 'cause I want to raise a good little foodie!

I do the same thing, Shel - got a coin jar that goes into the Coinstar machine and gets turned into Amazon cash. However, I tend to spend mine on money because I get so many books for review that I very rarely buy books anymore.
Case in point: just got Lightspeed: Year One, an anthology with every single story from John Joseph Adams' award-winning online magazine. There are some AMAZING stories in this book!

I need to read that soon, too! It's been languishing on the shelf.

I'm quite jealous that you both have a Miles Vorkosigan book that is as yet unread. I'd give just about anything to have a new one to read!
Laurel wrote: "I'm quite jealous that you both have a Miles Vorkosigan book that is as yet unread. I'd give just about anything to have a new one to read!"Is she writing another? Does anyone know?
Yep, it's been reported that the next book is about Ivan Vorpatril. While I would love to see how the story of Miles continues (especially given the end of Cryoburn), I've been hopping up and down with excitement about finally getting an Ivan story.
Is this "official", I mean about Ivan? I am hopping up and down! He looked so promising in Memory and A civil campaign...
Although, I do hope that Miles makes an appearance. Any scene with Miles and Ivan is eventually going to have me in hysterics!

I'm looking for them at the used book stores but they don't stay in stock very long.

I read the first one and found it ok, but it didn't compel me to read the next two. I guess I really don't like the premise.
I just read a few reviews, and the entire premise with the new structure of the country and the competition thing just turned me off completely. I don't think I could read it just because of that.
I'm planning on reading the Hunger Games as well. If you like the premise, Battle Royale was written before Hunger Games and has a similar premise. It's Japanese translated into English, I haven`t read it yet, but I`ve seen the movie based on the book and it was really good (it`s also Japanese so it`s subtitled).
