The Kepler Mission has been essentially doing the same thing for years, though a lot of their focus has been on finding Earth-like planets.

Certainly he has godlike status. But we should also remember Alfred Russel Wallace. He had similar ideas to Darwin, and his publications prompted Darwin to finally publish his works.
Ha ha! This isnt crime fiction ....The consensus is that they developed their ideas independently. Something held Darwin back from publishing, perhaps his religious convictions.
