Monkiecat, Marina actually asked the same thing. I'm really not sure why the software combines it.

I didn't love that it's considered all together either, especially since so many books are set there.

There isn't really a great option for me to break down, aside from doing a separate map that breaks down by county. That would be this one: https://mapchart.net/uk.html

I'm thinking that one is the other extreme and a bit too detailed.

But open to others' thoughts, who are more geographically adept or familiar with the area.

Carmen (TheReadingTrashQueen) (thereadingtrashqueen) | 260 comments I was the first to ask for the UK split but couldn't look at your link before. I think it might be too detailed indeed, but perhaps it can be colored in per country? A lot of work of perhaps, but maybe an option?

I can look at it more this weekend. If I can find a good resource to where I would know which counties are included in each country then I could definitely color in multiple counties per book to equal a country.

message 66: by Marie (new)

Marie | 1060 comments Would knowing just the ones that are on the borders work? That link you posted lets you just touch a county to colour it in. If you can do it that way, the border counties would be the edges, and then you could just fill in the middle. If you have to choose the county names individually, I can't help, but I think I know the edges.

I have no idea if it would work that way, and I can't 100% guarantee the accuracy of my geography, but I'm sure there are few other Brits around here who can correct me if I'm wrong.

The two northern-most English counties on that map are Cumberland and Northumberland - everything north of that is Scotland.

The ones at the border with Wales are Cheshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire. Everything west of them is Wales.

I'd agree with your border counties. I love that UK map though and might start tracking my UK reads by counties for myself!

Yes, it was excellent! I learned a lot without even noticing it, as the suspense was so well conducted and the rhythm so fast-paced. And the main characters were really compelling. I'm already eager to read her next book! :-)

Jody, I'm only using only one location per book so I've placed The Swarm under Germany, 11/22/63 under Texas

Marta, I put Barracoon in Alabama since it seems like it would spend more time there. Let me know if you want it changed to Benin

Perri, I'm putting in GA since my memory is telling me there was the more of the book focused on those years. But someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Anna, I'm putting New York to Dallas under Texas since we have so many for New York already.

The map is now up to date through message 86.

Unfortunately Oceania is not thoroughly displayed on the world map. I can try to expand that with a separate continent map.

I will also start on the UK map tomorrow. It is now black on the map because it is so much higher in count than all the others. I had to keep fixing the key to try to get the colors right and eventually decided to just black it out. It does have the correct count next to it on the list.

message 85: by Nadine in NY (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 2285 comments It's interesting that NY is leading the pack by so much! I live in NY so I tend to read a lot of books set in NY but I didn't realize that everyone else does too!

message 86: by Lizzy (new)

Lizzy | 907 comments Laura, I can see no changes on the maps. Should I be doing something once I open them? Thanks for your help.

I still have to update the links where each continent is broken down. The main map in the top post has been updated.

Lizzy | 907 comments Thanks Laura. I must admit I had missed that top link to the whole world.

message 89: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Thanks Laura. Both of those books fell into the “no distinct main setting”, so I put them all in so the group could decide. The Swarm especially had a lot of different settings (but those three were the main ones).

I just finished it. It is set primarily in Louisiana, but a good part of it is in Georgia as well. I am going to list it for Louisiana.

message 93: by Rachelnyc (new)

Rachelnyc | 943 comments I love this idea! I had to skip the read-a-thon because I was sick and didn't want to drag a team down but was especially bummed I missed it because of the travel theme.

Here are my ATY reads and locations so far for 2019:

Washington (state) Where'd You Go, Bernadette

Canada Heart Berries

Italy The Italian Teacher

Watching You

Ireland Milkman

Nigeria My Sister, the Serial Killer

Barbados Washington Black

Edie | 1143 comments Whoops, this was for an advanced prompt, so it can't count.
Louisiana - An American Marriage. This also takes place in Georgia, but the part of the story that occurred in Louisiana felt more important to me.

message 95: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
Rachelnyc, yes I am going to do a separate map for the UK. But the main map will need to have a total for all of the UK.

So splitting it up when you report it is ideal since it will allow me to apply it to the sub-map. Those that just tell me "UK" will only be reflected on the main map.

I hope that makes sense!

message 96: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (last edited Mar 24, 2019 06:57AM) (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
All of the individual maps have now been updated and there is also a new map of the United Kingdom (message 8)

If you gave me a general location (UK or United Kingdom) then your book is reflected only in the main world map. If you gave me a specific country (England or Scotland) then it is reflected in the specific map of the UK.

If you had given a general location and know the specific country then feel free to let me know and I can add it to the new specific map. Just please clearly tell me that it is an update so I don't add it to the main map a second time.

Wales and Northern Ireland do not have any books yet so they are listed as the country name on the key. This will allow me to still see the borders later.
