Dead Beat (The Dresden Files, #7) by Jim Butcher
Book: Dead Beat by Jim Butcher
Read: May 15
Rating: 4 stars
Review: So far this has been the most enjoyable of the series. Harry is ssssssllllooooowwwllyyy becoming someone who doesn't lead with is "staff".... BUT still has LONG LONG way to go from being a creep. I await the day where Mr. Butcher doesn't write Harry thinking something sexual or some thought on some woman's body. But I won't hold my breath, I like living. People can say but it's been awhile for him, I'm sorry when he was Susan he was just as bad.

We have a lot of action going on in this book, I feel like Harry is getting himself into one bind or another all the time. Honestly I'm surprised he's in as good shape he is in.

Also,

"Polka will never die, polka will never die!" You go Butters....

How Does It Fit: Shelved 20 times as next-in-series

Review: I don't know why this series reads so slowly for me. I enjoyed it very much, a more complex and interesting story than Ender's Game, which although great, was a bit more one-note to me. Excellent themes of humanity and religion, difficult relationships, secrets, mysteries and lies. Definitely recommended.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments New shelf

Kindle Freebie

Doesn't appear to be a winning shelf for anyone.

If paranormal erotica gets called its going to be a race with multiple teams.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I'll be reading:

(this book is still free and also on Audible Romance-btw)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Updated to here.

Requested our Series stamp.

We still need:

Psychic Abilities: Carrie
Next in Series: Skandia
Kindle Freebie (all of course)

Doing good team.

message 206: by Allison Ann (new)

Allison Ann | 414 comments All this call does is put two more teams in the running if Paranormal Erotica is called. :)

I'll be reading Eternity by Maggie Shayne for Kindle Freebie - shelved 14 times - 352 pages.

message 207: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 716 comments I think this is going to be a tricky one, I have lots on the list but trying to find a book that will satisfy another challenge I'm doing may be tricky.

message 208: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I was thinking earlier, that I don't remember a round where so many teams might be racing to win with one shelf call. Of course it may never come and a different winning shelf could be called. My team is one that will be racing to win if it is called.

I can't stop gushing about this series. Second book was as good as the first. Even better as I knew the world and main characters already.
I think Dina with her Gertrude Hunt Inn must be my all time favorite paranormal characters. Yes, it's a magic house and what a character it is! To host an intergalactic peace summit between three very different and bloodthirsty clans of aliens without serious incidents, you would have to be the best magic house.
Also her owner Dina is just brilliant. Resourceful, clever and she never gives up. Her ability to solve the most hopeless situations is just absolutely kick-ass!

Review: A fairly typical PR. The love is insta-love. And (literally) eternal. :) The ending was quite interesting though and bodes well for the next book in the series, so I will probably eventually continue.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Based on the updated done last week by Sam and if I'm reading it right:

I think there's a good shot that a winning shelf will be called this week. 8 out of the 11 shelves left are winners for at least one team.

Winning shelves:
Auto Buy
2018 reads
vampires
paranormal erotica (multiple teams including us)
strong female
UF
Paranormal Detectives
Series to finish

Of course that doesn't mean that the game will be won if a winner is called: they may not finish.

I have a paranormal erotica book fired up and ready to go. I wish the call came much earlier in the day. It comes after 7pm my time and I'm not a night owl. I also take aqua zumba on Wed nights but I will check the shelf call from my phone.

message 215: by Allison Ann (new)

Allison Ann | 414 comments The call comes at the end of my 15 hour work day, so I basically look at it and read for 5 minutes and fall asleep. I do have a Paranormal Erotica book ready to go. I wish it was a bit shorter, but I will do my best if it is called. :) My summer work schedule is very glad this might be our last week (even though the bookworm in me is sad).

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 716 comments I'm almost halfway finished my psychic abilities book, I should get it finished today. Then it's grind out the freebie, it's only short compared to some of the others I've read so I should be able to fly through that.

message 219: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Forgot to post my Kindle Freebie review. I'll get that up today and do some updating.

I'll check my phone while at the gym tonight. If paranormal erotica is called, I'll skip the steam room and hot tub and come home earlier so I can at least get some read. Not a fan of listening to an erotica book while getting ready for work in the morning. But I can make the sacrifice. I checked out both the audio and ebook version.

The Vampire's Mail Order Bride (Nocturne Falls, #1) by Kristen Painter

4 stars
5/20/19

This was an entertaining little book. I like the world building and the idea of Nocturne Falls. Enjoyed the characters and the banter and such. Great if you are in the mood for a lite-hearted read. I wouldn't have minded it being spicier because there's nothing more than a kiss and mention of sex in this.

This book was very popular some years ago.
I don't understand why. A story of 20 years old alcoholic and sex addict's dysfunctional relationship was not at all romantic but cringey and totally unattractive. Poor little rich kids.

Review: The dream team that is Ilona Andrews have done it again..

/bravo

Ok so first of all, boy am I ever grateful that book 3 is on hold and it tells me I have about 2 weeks to wait because yea this series is that good.

Second of all I'm sorry I doubted, I'm sorry I worried that this book wasn't going to live up to book 1, it has and more. I loved it. Slow starting at first for me, but that good have been me, I think it was me.

There was soo many cute moments in this book. The ferrets and Matilda asking Rogan to hold Bunny while she cleaned his eyes.

And I am interested to see more of Nevada's family and what those sisters can do.

Allison Ann | 414 comments I can't find anything UF so I'm going to follow Carrie and read Don't Judge a Girl by Her Cover (Gallagher Girls, #3) by Ally Carter - shelved 35 times as favorite-series, 263 pages.

message 235: by Skandia (new)

Skandia (sfgirl) | 780 comments I'm going to read Moon Called (Mercy Thompson, #1) by Patricia Briggs for Favorite Series shelf.

Can't even remember how many times this series has been recommended to me but as I wasn't the biggest fan of Alpha and Omega series by Patricia Briggs, I haven't picked it up yet. I guess now is a good time finally to start.

Review: Elizabeth has been looking out for her brother Benny ever since he protected her as young teenager. His life has just gone down hill, from gambling to drugs, and when ever he needs help it's Lizzy he turns to, except this time they both might be in over their heads. The man he owes money to wants Elizabeth to be his for 6 months, Porter her ex and fellow work mate comes to her rescue and the action takes off from there.

We have car cases, guns, rocket launchers and sparks that still fly between Elizabeth and Porter. No One to Trust by Katie Reus is a quick and steamy ride

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Favorite Series:

The Duke and I (Bridgertons, #1) by Julia Quinn

5/25/19

4 stars

A highly entertaining read that introduces us to the vast Bridgerton clan. I read Hyacinth's story awhile back and figured I'd go back and read the series from the beginning. Julie Quinn is fairly a fairly predictable author but usually entertaining and sometimes I want predictable and entertaining. I found Simon a bit annoying not enough to deter too much from my enjoyment. Daphne's ignorance of where babies come from was a little unbelievable even considering the time frame. But maybe many mother's were like hers and too embarrassed to explain it to their daughters.

message 242: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Well, a winning shelf was called for 4 teams but not us.

Urban Fantasy. Gives us another potential winning shelf (paranormal detective) if none of the 4 teams wins this week. But that would really surprise me. But I'll probably read one for it anyway because I happen to have a couple of UF books lined up anyway.

Keep posting your reviews just in case. I'll keep requesting shelves. I was too busy at work today to finish updating and do our shelf requests. I'll try to do it tomorrow.

I'll keep checking for awhile and will request any last stamps we have pending if anyone posts their reviews. I'm half-way through a UF and will post mine if everyone else does and wants to get that last stamp. I think they usually keep it open for about a week.

I already requested our Next in Series and Psychic Abilities stamps. I think the only outstanding ones are the Favorite Series and UF.
