Review: This book was not as feel good as the movie but I did enjoy it. I really like the movie but it has been years since I've seen it so I wanted to read the book with fresh eyes. Amy Tan is one of my favorites!

Review: The more of Gail Carriger's books I read, the more I like them. This series took me a book or two to really get into, but now that I know what to expect from the zany world and characters I can just sit back and laugh at all of their antics. Alexia spends the entire book very, VERY pregnant and all of her waddling while ordering people around is quite amusing. Some big, major changes happened over the course of this book and the ending has me itching to read on in the series. Looks like we'll be heading into the 50s soon, though... :)

This book was way better than I thought it would be. Most of the paranormal romance books I pick up to read ends up having the guy who has too much angst and woe is me going on. Makes me want to slap them. And the women?? I'm all for a strong woman but, errrr!, can't you just stop and listen! Makes me want to slap them too.
But this book had the strong, dark male, who of course has issues, but knows when to put them aside and get on with it. The female is strong and independent but knows how to think, not run first, ask later. The HEA came about 2/3rds into the book so I was surprised when it kept going but it didn't make the story drag. It actually set up the stories for the next books.

This book takes place right after Katy had been captured by Daedelus. WE finally get to see the motivations and beliefs of Daedelus, and how far Daemon would go to reunite with Katy.
The writing always leaves me just a little unsatisfied but I do like Katy & Daemon together

Read: Parasite by Mira Grant

Ever since I finished the Newsflesh Trilogy, I have been dying to get my hands on more Mira Grant. She blew me away with her debut series, mixing classic zombie horror with her unique academic background, the blogging craze, and some insane plot twists to create a refreshing, addicting addition to the zombie genre.
Now Grant brings us parasites at their most horrific, but doesn't quite deviate from her Zed roots. The main threat of the story still comes across very zombie-like, with the addition of the possibility for selective attacking and intelligence. Not entirely disappointing, however I was hoping for something other and new from Grant.
I can't help but feel like a good chunk of the story and characters mirror the Newsflesh books. Sal comes off a milder, more excitable Georgia Mason. Her narrative voice feeling all too familiar... minus George's kickass factor. I also found Tansy, bore a striking resemblance to The Fox, a quirky and adorably psychotic character who makes a short appearance in Mira's previous series.
On top of the recycled characters, my last bit of complaint extends to predictability. Where Newsflesh completely threw me for a loop, Parasite uses excessive foreshadowing and not so subtle hint dropping. I knew what was coming... And what's the fun in that?
For the handful of negatives this book had for me, I still enjoyed it very much. As always, Grant's writing is verbose, intelligent, and full of delightful scientific tid-bits. Although her hints were predictable this time around, she still delivers them well and with enough variation that they still resonate with horrific deliciousness.
I'm hoping for a little more umph! from the next book, Symbiont.

I have a really tough decision to make...I took a hiatus from reading the Georgina Kincaid series by Richelle Mead because of certain elements in the plot that really offended my personal morals. I know, I know... I kinda have to expect moral gray areas in a series about a succubus, but honestly the selfishness of the character really irked me. While the series kinda put me off with the last book I read, I hate leaving a series unfinished. This week's roll gives me the opportunity to pick up where I left off. With book 5
Any advice? I'd like to finish the series, but I'm not sure if it will just end up being a negative experience for me. Has anyone on our team finished all the books in this series?

I have finished it. I was satisfied in the ending but I am not a big fan of Richelle MEad's writing. there is always selfish MCs, and the story is full of bad decisions by really flawed characters. Her writing also has a lot of plot holes. But I finished it and if you really think about it, you can guess the ending
Being nosy...I thought it wrapped up nicely.

Book: Eternity and a Day by Aline Hunter (Alternative choice: Author's Name "A")

I don't know what I was expecting in this one, but I was really surprised at how much i enjoyed it. The world was very different, it had all kinds of creatures in the realm, fae, dragons, brownie, selkies, demons, witches/sorcerers, vampires, negromancers--which I don't know what the heck that is, but they were there.
So Runa Charon is the 5th child to a Sidhe but unlike her siblings, she was born to a mortal woman. So she is the family black sheep. When her sister Octavia tricks her into paying for a crime committed by Octavia, Runa finds herself bound to a draigen named Eric Locke. But from the moment Eric saw Runa, he knew she was his chosen, so now he just has to convince the mortal fae girl to have him as a life partner.
This story was well written, and very entertaining. Runa was really likable and wasn't a weakling. Yes, she was a tad gullible on the Octavia front, but Runa learned quick and didn't make the same mistake twice. Eric was also a likeable character. He worked to gain her trust and he was very sweet. I don't know if the author needed every creature in the Lore, but I guess like IAD, the more creatures, the more the author has to weave love stories.

Week 7: Space: 56 - "A" Author by Isaac AsimovFinished: 10/16/14

If you are expecting to read a story to follow the movie, this isn't it. While I get that movies don't follow the books to the letter, in this case, it only followed the name. Period. It uses the term "based from" loosely.
The story is told as a gentleman trying to do research on the progression and use of robots and speaks with Dr. Susan Calvin of U. S. Robots & Mechanical Men Corporation. She then tells a bunch of stories explaining the different situations with the different types of robots and how they function adhering to the three laws. So it's a book of short stories.
Now, I was greatly disappointed that it was nothing like the movie, which is what I expected picking it up, but, once I finished it, I decided it was actually interesting. Each of the stories involved a particular robot and how it was not acting as to be expected, and that became a problem. Then, as the characters thought it through, they discovered how the robot was actually acting according to it's 3 laws. Very smart I tell ya! You have to read it to get it. :)

Review: You know it's a good sign when you're so engrossed in a book that you miss your train stop. Last night I was so anxious to find out what happened that when I finally looked up I had overshot my commute by two stops!
I didn't think I would like this as much as I did. The enemies-to-lovers theme was great, but I'm not so much into the kidnapping stuff. Thankfully, that was less of an issue here than the synopsis led me to believe. Loretta has a lot more agency over her choices, and even though she can sometimes find herself forced into situations, she never loses or gives herself over to the anticipated outcome. I loved that she fought against my expectations and proved to be a feisty and brave heroine.
The only reason I knocked off a star was because the plot ambled around a bit too much for me, especially toward the end. There was a lot of back and forth, repetitious scenes that gave us no new information. Other than that, I really liked this book and plan to read the sequel.

This series has SO MUCH potential! If the author can manage to reign in the absolute mayhem created by her disarray of monsters, myth, and mystery. The story and characters are just going way too many directions at once. The plot is intriguing, but disjointed and in desperate need of some more experienced writing to tie it all together.
As this is the author's first novel, it is understandable it isn't quite where it should be. The structure and style come across very amateurish and the plethora of seemingly random plot points steals away the creepiness I picked this book up for. I believe Anya Allyn really has something here, it just isn't executed well enough.
Yet.
I'm very much hoping her writing only improves with each book because I do intend to continue. My curiosity has been piqued.

Review: Very interesting book, the main message was that technology that goes into mass producing fast food is being used for evil rather than good and we need to demand better from the fast food industry. Which is something that we all know but the majority of the world ignores. I may be a bad person because while I was listening to this book, I was eating McDonalds. BUT I was eating a McFish and he did not mention ANYTHING about fish, just chicken and beef.

I honestly didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did. A fantastic reviewer friend of mine absolutely despised this book. Out tastes in fiction usually mesh really well so I was sure this wouldn't be my cup of tea either. However, I had purchased the paperback and felt bad letting it sit on my shelf unread.
This Is Not A Test surprised me, bringing such a myriad of painful choices and psychological and emotional consequences to the characters. While the zombies aren't the spotlight of the story, they make an eerie backdrop for the wayward teens and their conflicting opinions. Each moment is tense, and when the big plot punches are finally thrown, they truly resonate.
While stand alone novels are wonderful, I'm sad I won't get to see where the surviving characters go from here.
I finished my book yesterday and will get a review up tomorrow, promise!

Review: TIGERS!!!!! Oh man I just loved the mystery in this book. I want to go to a big cat sanctuary and get hugged like Ty. Ty and Zane's romance really blossomed in this one, and the stuff with their families got me a little choked up on multiple occasions. I can't believe I'm nearing the end of this series!

Dr. Eric Najarian has been approached by a group called Caduceus. They promised to get him the residency he is in the running for if he does one little thing for them first. Before that happens, he meets Laura who is looking for her missing brother. Together, they stumble upon and then pursue the actions of this secret group, which includes member high up in the hospital hierarchy.
There wasn't too much medical jargon in this book which made it flow nicely for the medically uneducated. I do think Laura's brother, Scott, could of used a little more fleshing out since he was an important, if somewhat in the background character. I love Michael Palmer books and this is no exception. I plan on reading more of his books.
