Btw, I'm only going to mention one book per slot - I read hundreds of books a year and you-all don't want to see the whole list here.

Also, I hope we talk about what we're reading, at least for the earlier books. For example: as mentioned in the preceding version of this challenge, it's not all that easy to find books set in the first part of the century that acknowledged WWI.

I started The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter today. I'm on page 117 and so far it has been incredibly boring.

Hm, I found The Heart is a Lonely Hunter to be intriguing - I gave it three stars. It's certainly not an adventure. And it does start slow, for sure. Published 1940, so older, so I think participants might want to consider it. I think, if they read My Antonia for the preceding decade challenge, they'd be fine with this. But of course that's just my opinion. :)

Oh, Titus Alone! I love the Gormenghast books! I have the audio versions on audible somewhere and your mention has inspired me to download them again soon. Perfect for long winter evenings.

For the 50s, I just read a nice little story by the author of Miss Bianca stories and Cluny Brown. The Gypsy in the Parlour takes place in the 1870s in Devonshire, and the protagonist is a young girl who gets caught up in a mild family drama. It's pretty much a gentle satire and I gave it four stars.

Just finished a 'too early' book but saw others had listed further back last year so I have too! An AudioSYNC find about which I had not previously heard, Red Badge is apparently an American classic. I'm still not sure whether Crane is promoting war or not - descriptions of broken men are pretty harrowing but our hero finds glory on the battlefield.

I'm sorry. I guess I didn't make myself clear about the timeline for this challenge.
The dates are SEPTEMBER 1, 2014 through SEPTEMBER 1, 2015. What I mean by those dates is that the books must be read between those dates, unless you did the early sign up then you may count the books read during the last week of August.
Please don't list books read years ago. If we all listed books read in the last few years then most of us would finish this challenge in 5 minutes.
The point of the challenge is to motivate you to read NOW. Maybe dust off an old classic that you've been planning to read for years but, for whatever reason, have never gotten around to reading yet.
This isn't a race to see who will finish first, it's an invitation to explore books from the past.
Most of all, have FUN getting lost in your bookcases!

Posting to add my 1980s read, Love In The Time Of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. This is the first of his books I've read and his writing style took a bit of getting into, but that might be because I've been distracted lately. Once gripped, I loved the book though. Beautiful emotive writing and great characters - selfish, flawed and very real.

If you're looking for 1960s books and you like mysteries, give the Martin Beck series by Sjowall and Wahloo a try. These are the original Swedish crime thrillers that inspired the likes of Stieg Larsson and Henning Mankell. I've just devoured the fourth, The Laughing Policeman, and the first in the series is Roseanna. Apart from a lack of technology, the books have hardly dated at all.

King Rat by James Clavell (1962) was a great read, set in Changi POW camp in Singapore. Full of moral dilemmas and remarkably tolerant of both the Asian point of view and accepting of the gay and cross-dressing characters who don't normally show up in WWII books and films. An unexpected gem.

Never saw the movie, but finally read the book Jaws. Interesting flashback to the 1970s.
