I'm Crumb! I got in on the tail-end of UNO last year and am really hoping that I'll get accepted to play this year. Is there anything you experts think I should know? My favorite genres are women's fiction, psychological thrillers, and historical fiction. I can't wait to read the following:
An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendricks
Lost Roses by Martha Hall Kelly
The Lost Girls of Paris by Pam Jenoff
The Farm by Joanne Ramos

Jenny | 2346 comments Jonny wrote: "But seriously...I just joined. What is this UNO Challenge?"

There are instructions and a faq thread to look at, but in a nutshell, Uno is a team card game. Uno hands are dealt to the teams by the moderator, and the team has to read books that fit the cards dealt. Every Uno card has a value attached to it. Numbers become letters for a Spell-it-out challenge. For example, if you are reading a book to cover a 2 card, you will read a book that starts with the letter T. Each hand there will be colored cards dealt which means if you get a red 2, you would read a book beginning with T that has a red cover.
There are also monthly mini-challenges to try to finish in addition to the dealt hand, which may be anything. Perhaps a scavenger hunt, where there will be a bunch of tasks to fill, like trying to find a book with a squirrel on the cover, or a book that has the word "Cuckoo" in the text. The mini-challenges will be whatever the crazy moderators decide for us. *shudder*

Hope that helps.

It's pretty easy, up to the point that you have to find 4 yellow cover books with an I character. At least, that's when I start cursing the book gods! ;-P

Pro-tip - if you like classic Sci-Fi, Gollanz does a line of pure yellow covers :)

Hi Christina,
Like you; I thought the synopsis looked really interesting, but I am also disappointed. The first few pages of the book were intriguing. The middle dragged; I think its why its taking me soooo long to finish! Looking for my next 2019 reads to be a bit more entertaining. I may have to go back and check out all the books everyone 's waiting to read!

Rayne (raynebair) | 201 comments I'm a little bit confused. First timer here.

I guess I don't really get how the random coloured cards come into play. I just thought that we'd get cards that had a color and # combo just like in real uno, but the instructions on the other thread don't read that way for me.

Can I get an example or see an example in maybe an archived thread?

message 135: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Ooh, Mad-Tineye-Moody questions. I have two, and I do not see them in the FAQ.

For audio books we use the default page number, but there is often a different cover from the default edition. Last year I listened to a book that had a yellow cover, but the default edition (paperback) was blue. I argued for the yellow cover, as that is what was published for the edition I was using, but was overruled. Which is right?

Also, there are times when I look at a physical copy of a book and see green, say, but Tineye says blue. Do we only rely on Tineye, or should we argue for exceptions? Last year I had a book with a gold cover that Tineye said was yellow, but I was told that gold won't work. I also had a book that was many colors, and looked sort of brown, but Tineye said was over 50% green. But, since it looked sort of brown, I couldn't use it for green. So I guess my question is when do we rely on Tineye, and when do we not?

I really don't expect a ruling from the mods on these questions, but I am hopeful...

Each hand that is dealt to a team has a few colored cards in it. For those cards you need to match a book cover color and the letter that corresponds to the number of the card. Most of the cards a team gets do not have a color attached to it. I don't remember the exact number of cards in a hand, but if there are 35 cards dealt, maybe 6 of them will be color cards.
So, if there is a red 2 card, you need a book that has over 50% red on the cover, and works for the letter T (T for 2).
The rest of the hand works like a regular spell-it-out, the card numbers correspond to letters.

message 137: by Helke (new)

Helke (mogelpackung) | 1389 comments Jenny, in my other groups the ruling of the challenge mod is law. So when the mod says the cover is yellow it is yellow no questions about it. The only time we can question the ruling is, when the same book gets different rulings.
We also have the rule that you can only use the cover of the book you read if it has to have a main colour . But I think it would make sence to say you can use the average page count for the other editions as page count for the audiobook.

Last year we had a different "group" for (co-) captains/ Mods and If you saw that book is one colour but Tineye says other then we took this book to captain table and we voted - if it's one or another colour. So there is a chance that your book will work or ... not. Also, if the book looks green then it's green, but using Tineye to be sure that this works and your hand/card will count.

About Audiobook - Last year, you could shelf either audiobook edition or default edition. Just pages for Audio were taken from default edition.
But keep in mind that rules for this year can be changed, everything is possible :D

message 141: by Eldarwen (last edited Jan 09, 2019 07:34AM) (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Whoever said that Tineye is the main tool to be used? :-p

Honestly, some covers make it hard, especially when you go down the gold/yellow or the turquoise/blue/green route.

Rule of thumb though: when you look at the cover and it screams a particular colour at you, usually that is the colour you can use it for. Of course, there are covers that yell a particular colour but aren't really just the one colour. Example: Gaudenzia, Pride of the Palio by Marguerite Henry - whenever I look at it, I think "green" instantly, but it couldn't actually be used for a green cover because while that is the colour that sticks out, it isn't 50%.

Tineye is a tool to be used when you're on the fence because there are, say, 2 dominant colours on the cover. Don't make Tineye the rule. Look at the cover. Then go to your team. Feel free to use tineye though to verify a cover you're wondering about.

But honestly, make your own lives (and ours) easier and go with books where it's clear which colour the cover is as much as possible. Not always easy, I know, especially if you want to make one book fit for as many challenges as possible, but.. you get the idea :-)

(Eta: Basically what Elen said :-))

message 144: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments It's good to do it beforehand! Because it does make life easier during the challenge, that's for sure.

But we all know how fickle Tineye can be, hence the Madeye Moody.... :-)) and the reason why we're stretching the notion of "if in doubt or lack of majority votes for a colour, don't use it" - which, I know, can suck at times.

I'm in the same boat. I have issues with color lines, such as where red stops and orange begins etc.

message 148: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments That's where it comes in handy when you have a team of people around you who can weigh in. Sometimes it's pretty hard to figure out which colour it really is when it could be borderline something else.

message 149: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Just waking up, but I would like to second/third what Elen and Eldarwen said.

At some point over the years we have all gone tineye crazy. I think I can pin point it back to Wobble where if it wasn’t over 50% using that tool then you couldn’t use it. But that was a crazy challenge.

UNO was designed to be more laid back. It was designed for those who have never done team challenges before, or veterans who just want something a bit easier. It was never designed as a competitive challenge but is meant to be a social one (hence why I started it in this group).
So if you have a book you think is a certain colour, post to your team thread. If your team agrees you are good to go. If your team or captains aren’t sure they may use tineye. The captains can also take it to the captains group (where the result is binding).

If you have an audiobook you can use the cover you are reading - you can even shelve that edition. It is just the page numbers that come from the default edition to make sure it meets the challenge requirements.
