Great review. This book seems to depict a very grim future.

Ooh sounds like my kinda genre! I’ve just added the 1st to my TBR list based on your review.
How does it read in terms of thrill/suspense/horror? Does it get pretty dark? (That would be favourable) haha

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9974 comments Very occasionally, you get a lot more than you pay for. This is certainly the case with The Roommate, an audio novella from Dervla McTiernan which is a stand-alone prequel to the Cormac Reilly series. It's free for subscribers of the author's newsletter and a young Cormac Reilly makes a few appearances.

5★s from me

Brenda, at the moment, yes, just like her other prequel, The Sisters, but at least it's a freebie.

The series does get a bit dark and gritty in spots as she's up against some pretty nasty criminals, especially in the second book where she's deep undercover.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9974 comments The First Time Lauren Pailing Died is a brilliant debut novel by Alyson Rudd, but some parts of the back-cover blurb are so misleading that it’s rather distracting for the reader. It’s almost as if the person who wrote it did no more than skim the novel.

I got past that and gave it 5★s
