Linda | 915 comments Nancy, I wonder if it would help people with future polls if you could do as you've done before, and put an asterisk next to those we've already discussed./

This took a lot of work! Thank you, Nancy!

It should make it easier to look into some of the list.

Mandy | 41 comments Thanks for doing this list. Good work!

Ella (ellamc) | 300 comments Mods, please move this to where it actually belongs.

A question about those extra points we get for taking part (that seems so wrong when I type it, but OK.) Do they carry over if we can't use them? Or if we participate in more than one discussion and didn't use our point, would we then have two spare/extra points for a later poll?

Finally, if that's the case, do you guys need me to whip up a spreadsheet to keep score? I'm a great believer in google sheets for groups!

I don't know that these are things we have even thought of!

My understanding is that the points don't accumulate, but are a way to weight the voting so that those who don't participate aren't given more precedence to dictate the book choice over those who do interact on the threads.

At this point, I'm still at a Yes/No stage when it comes to bonus points. If someone participated in book discussions this year (or even just this month), they have a point to use for the next vote. But ultimately, yes a spreadsheet would be handy, and motivating for some of us. I was envisioning something like the PlayBookTag group does, which is more complicated but very fun. I'll send you the links and we can move this discussion to DMs.

The exception is Jacinta, who earned multiple points for a challenge. She (and several other regulars) expressed interest in Crime and Punishment, so I think it will be a good choice for the Third quarter big read (if we lower the page number requirement). It's shorter than other big books, but that would give people more flexibility in the summer. Jacinta and Linda teach, so summer is good for them. We could stagger in some extra bonus books at the half-month point.

Gretchen Hi...

I have my 2019 remaining reads mostly planned out based on other challenges. Next year I would like to focus on some of my bigger books. Do you have plans to keep this group into next year? There are books on the GAR list that I would like read. Thanks

As long as we have people interested! Would you like to help moderate? I'm focused on newer books right now, but this group doesn't take much time. I think it makes sense that the most active people have a role in decision making.

What are you planning to read this year?

message 10: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen My books for the remainder of this are mostly related to a couple of challenges and a personal goal. Goodreads summer challenge, several new books to be released this year, clearing more tbr books, and I am still chipping away at Amazons 100 mysteries to read in a lifetime. I'm at 72 completed. As far as co-moderating with...let me think on it. My life is heading toward upheaval as I look for e new job and moving back to my house in California. I don't want to make a commitment then be unable to follow through. I will private message you in the fall ok?

72 is great! If you have some titles, let me know, and we might find some opportunities for buddy reads to match challenges. A lot of my challenges this year involve monthly themes, but I don't get a lot of advance notice.

message 12: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen I am reading 3 books (not at the same time :) ) right now. CJ Box's newest - not a Longmire, Becoming by Michelle Obama and I love this book - up till 0400 this AM reading it, and re-reading Charlotte's Web.

I am not sure about upcoming books. I have to look at my TBR list.

message 13: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen The big books for next year are Game of Thrones, a couple of Greg Iles books, collection of Sherlock Holmes stories, any new releases of my fave mystery authors, more of my Amazon 100 mysteries, and a couple more off GAR for 2018-2019. Many of those books I just have no interest in and a couple don't belong there as you know. Still have not been able to get into Pride and Prejudice and Rebecca and I have tried. That is it for now.

message 14: by Linda (new)

Linda | 915 comments I found I didn't enjoy Rebecca as much as I enjoyed "My Cousin Rachel"- go figure. But they are redoing the movie, apparently

message 15: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen Rebecca makes all sorts of top 100 lists with high ratings so I suspect I need to plow on through. I am determined. I even made a shelf of books "I stRted but put aside". 😛

message 16: by Parker (new)

Parker | 204 comments Gretchen, it took me three tries to get throgh Pride and Prejudice. I FINALLY did it.

Lynn (lynnsreads) Hello I am new to the group. I have not been reading specifically from the American Great Read list, so I thought I would tally how many I had read. I have in my lifetime read thirty-seven of the list books. Of that thirty-seven, seven were read in the last year. Here are my recent reads:

To Kill a Mockingbird
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
Rebecca
The Picture of Dorian Gray
Siddhartha
Things Fall Apart
The Sirens of Titan

Welcome to the group, Lynn. Not many of us have only been reading from this list, and of course it's a pretty new list, so we've all been picking bits and pieces. We're a bit quiet here over the summer, but happy to see new faces.

Check out the upcoming reads & we leave the individual book threads open forever, so feel free to add your thoughts on any of the books you've read to any of the threads.

Looks like you've had a bunch of good recent reads!
