Sabrina | 393 comments I made more updates. I think I have to make another spreadsheet for the second board (unless Emily gets to it....). If not I'll make it tomorrow.

message 102: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina | 393 comments We're waiting on approval for 3 and 9. The others we still need to accomplish are the last page goal, both audio goals, and the january/december setting.

Today I got through a large chunk of Cress - 410 pages, and about half of Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore on audio.

Tomorrow I'll finish Cress, start Turtles All the Way Down, and probably finish Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore too.

message 103: by Beth F (new)

Beth F | 63 comments Are we supposed to finish Board 1 before starting on Board 2?

If we can start working towards the second set, the book I just finished (An American Marriage) would fit the following new tasks:
#28 - book with a metallic cover (the tree is gilded)
#46 (❄️) - read for 2018 AtY challenge, fits week #52 for a book that was published in 2018

I'm planning a trip to the library tomorrow and will pick up an audiobook so I can begin contributing hours there as well.

message 104: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I've listened to another 4 hours of audio, which completed my portion of audio in Board 2. I've also read 820 pages today (400 of those were very easy - I'm not a complete reading machine 😁).

I've finished two more books (Modern Baking and Basics to Brilliance), which brings my total read-a-thon completed books to 10, and completes my portion of the book total for both boards.

A question for Laura - can we use any read-a-thon finished books for Board 2, or just the ones we've finished since it was added?

Depending on the answer to that, I'll let you know what I can contribute to Board 2.

message 105: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Morrison | 478 comments I finished another two hours of audio this morning while driving. I work tonight, so if I can fall back to sleep I probably won’t get any more reading done today. That’s honestly not very likely though so I should get some more pages in this afternoon.

message 106: by Beth F (new)

Beth F | 63 comments I read 3 more children's books to my kids for task #37.

Here Comes the Tooth Fairy Cat by Deborah Underwood (96 pages)
Rodeo Clown by Nick Gordon (24 pages)
Pinkalicious: Puptastic! by Victoria Kann (32 pages)

+ 152 pages (820 total)

message 107: by Tracy (last edited Dec 28, 2018 11:41AM) (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments The girls and I read a bunch of picture books. If we're doing a second round I guess we can use some there and then maybe just use towards page counts?

The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats The Not Very Merry Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney Julia's House for Lost Creatures by Ben Hatke Rainbow Crow by Nancy Van Laan

total pages: 184 pages

Hopefully I can try and read something for myself tonight. Im feeling ready crawl in bed and hide with books now, so this weekend through Monday.....

I don't see any issue counting any book that was read during the read-a-thon, for either board.

In reality, I would have made harder or more complex boards, I just didn't know how big of an impact the holiday would have.

message 109: by Marin (new)

Marin (marinbeth) | 187 comments Hi all,

Pages since last update: 263 (new total is 881).
Audiobook hours: 2 (new total is 3.25).

Books finished:
The Red House Mystery by A.A. Milne, so this could count for #35: an author's name starting with A

The bottom middle book on the first board is (view spoiler). The bottom left is really bothering me. Is the link (view spoiler)?

message 110: by Kathy Jo (new)

Kathy Jo (kjsotr) | 304 comments I read 150 pages of Out of Africa since my last update. Christmas break has been keeping me busy!

message 111: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina | 393 comments more updates: from the first board, 3,9,12, and 24 are all complete and pending approval
for the second board: 27,28, 35 are all complete and pending approval as well.
29, 34, 40, and 45 can also be completed by books I already read that haven't counted in a category yet. For 29 (reject prompt: hogwarts house) - deathly hallows, 34 (heartwarming book) - what if it's us, 40 (comic book/gn) - captain america and bucky: old wounds and 45 (one sitting) - cap and bucky

I've edited the spreadsheet for the new categories.

Definitely check my work under your names bc I'm sure I missed stuff with the transition!!

As for me I had a very good reading day. I got through the last 142 pages of Cress, another 2.25 hours of Mr. penumbra's, and I started and finished turtles all the way down.

Tomorrow, I'm going to read and likely finish Shadow and Bone. I'll also do more of Mr penumbra's.

message 112: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I can contribute to a couple of the open spots on Board 2.

#42 (1st in a series): Jurassic Park
#44 (Nonfiction): How to Be Black

message 115: by Tracy (last edited Dec 29, 2018 06:30AM) (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments working on #42 now- First in a series (His Majesty's Dragon, and is a book towards my ATY challenge. Also The Giver which was published in January. Will try and get in some audio hours while I clean today. I'm trying to make up for my lack of read a thon teamwork this weekend. 😕

IF by some miracle I can pull this off I also have a graphic novel started (Hey, Kiddo) and my last ATY book Force of Nature was nominated for the GR choice awards this year.

I may switch up my reading order to get in some pages and tasks because I'm struggling with this Temeraire series. Let me know what will be most helpful. It looks like working on the graphic, Giver and Force of Nature first will be more productive.

message 116: by Jody (last edited Dec 29, 2018 09:20AM) (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments i just finished We Are Legion - We Are Bob, which can count for #36 (N-E-W in the title).

I updated my three books in the spreadsheet, and also my page total - I've done another 404 pages, so I've hit my total. Not that that's going to stop me reading!

message 117: by Joanne (last edited Dec 30, 2018 09:33AM) (new)

Joanne | 477 comments I finally finished a book!

Sorry I've been missing. Between getting sick, and the holidays and all the craziness that goes with that, I've barely been reading.

I've finished Purple Hearts (Front Lines, #3) by Michael Grant
So that's an additional 576 pages for me. It's also published in January.

Edit: updated spreadsheet

message 118: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments almost done with the graphic novel

message 119: by Joanne (last edited Dec 29, 2018 09:41AM) (new)

Joanne | 477 comments Is there a post as to which of the book covers we've figured out?

On the second board, obviously the top middle is (view spoiler) and the bottom middle is (view spoiler)

I'm having trouble figuring out the books in the first board though.

Unless I missed a guess, the first board has been updated with all correct guesses, except the bottom middle: (view spoiler)

message 121: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Hi all. I am down with the flu, but managed to read some between fits of coughing...
I finished The Lies of Locke Lamora so we can add:
1 book
206 pages
It also works for:
First in series
Reject prompt: A book in which a character uses a disguise or a false/fake identity
And it is Scott Lynch's debut novel
If those are not used yet.

Joanne | 477 comments Laura wrote: "Unless I missed a guess, the first board has been updated with all correct guesses, except the bottom middle: [spoilers removed]"

Where can I see the answers?

message 123: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Morrison | 478 comments I started Once and for All and have finished 196 pages.

message 124: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments read 205 pages today.

Johanne , feel better soon

message 125: by Kathy Jo (new)

Kathy Jo (kjsotr) | 304 comments My son and I read 10 pages of Grimm's Fairy Tales. Reading out loud is rough on your voice!

I finished another 60 pages of Out of Africa.

Spent the day with my husband so I didn't get much reading done, but enjoying my time off work.

message 126: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Johanne, that's not good news! I hope you're feeling better soon.

How are you finding Out of Africa, Kathy Jo?

message 127: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Thanks. I am feeling pretty miserable, but at least I am able to read some.

Joanne, the text is visible in the board on the first page.

Answers are:

(view spoiler)

The remaining books have not been guessed correctly yet.

message 129: by Jody (last edited Dec 30, 2018 01:07PM) (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I've just finished Storm Front, which works for the debut novel square.

Laura if you get a chance, are you able update our second board? There are a few in there pending - not sure if you are waiting on Sabrina, but she hasn't checked in for a couple of days and it would be great to be able to see more of the board. Thanks!

The ones we have completed & need to be revealed are:

36
42
44
47

I *think* 40 has been revealed - is it a teeny skinny one? If not, we have finished 40 too.

Thank you - I think you have a lot on your plate this time around so thanks for all of your hard work keeping things rolling.

Thanks. For some reason I thought someone had said the first board was finished. I'll have to do some research to try to figure out the remaining books.

message 131: by Joanne (new)

Joanne | 477 comments I updated my book from post 122 on the spreadsheet myself. The "pages" part I figured out no problem, but I wasn't sure on the procedure for the "tasks" portion. I just wrote the name into the published in January area.

message 132: by Joanne (new)

Joanne | 477 comments I figured out a few titles.

Once I realized that all the titles in the first board seemed like (view spoiler), it was easier to search.

1st board

Bottom left (view spoiler)

2nd board
Top middle (view spoiler)

Bottom middle (view spoiler)

message 133: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Great Joanne! I had a hard time with those covers!

message 134: by Joanne (new)

Joanne | 477 comments I had never even heard of a few of the books, so would never have figured them out otherwise. Still can't figure out the bottom right on the first board though.

message 135: by Kathy Jo (new)

Kathy Jo (kjsotr) | 304 comments Jody- I agree with the "it's not what I thought." I'm enjoying the book but it isn't really drawing me in. I'm having trouble following all the unusual names. And then she throws in some random phrase in a different language (French?). But it would work well for the indigenous people prompt for 2019.
I'm trying to work on my Around the World challenge until I start ATY 2019.

What is everyone"s plan for 2019? Trying to figure out if I want to start with some easy ones and get a head start or try to knock out some hard ones.

message 136: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Morrison | 478 comments I finished Once and for All, another 160 pages for me. I don't think it fits any of the prompts.

message 137: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I expected more of a narrative - I wasn’t really drawn in either, and I think that’s the main reason. The stories were interesting but not compelling in a way that made me desperate to keep reading.

Joanne | 477 comments Kathy Jo wrote: "What is everyone"s plan for 2019? Trying to figure out if I want to start with some easy ones and get a head start or try to knock out some hard ones. "

I'll being doing the challenge for the first time in 2019, just joined this past fall, so I'm excited. I've gone through the books I currently have on my radar as reading up next and slotted them in where they fit, sometimes in multiple spots. I'm planning to go roughly in order, picking my next book from the next 2-3 prompts based on what works for all the other reading challenges I'm in.

message 139: by Johanne (last edited Dec 30, 2018 03:18PM) (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Feeling a bit better, but changed plans for New Years tomorrow, so going to stay home, which is fine by me.
Since last I read 3 graphic novels and one short story:
En pakke cigaretter by Johanne Helga Heiberg Gavrilo Princip by Henrik Rehr A Study in Emerald by Neil Gaiman Swing it, Sunny by Jennifer L. Holm
They can count for:
Graphic novel (if that wasn't taken)
1 childrens book (Swing it Sunny)
1 book (Gavrilo Princip)
The rest is pages (since two of them were shorter than 100 pages)
552 pages

Well I try to mix it up. I don't have a sound plan though - I have a shelf of books to read and I'll start off by making a dent in that and see where it fits (I know a large part do) and at the same time start some harder reads. I usually have several books going at once, but otherwise shift between the hard and the easy reads. But it might be a good idea to start off with an easy read to keep up the spirit.

message 141: by Kathy Jo (new)

Kathy Jo (kjsotr) | 304 comments Finished Out of Africa.

Total pages: 1160 pages total!

Long Walk to Water will count as a children's book if we still need them.

message 142: by Beth F (last edited Dec 30, 2018 07:53PM) (new)

Beth F | 63 comments I haven't finished reading anything since my last check-in but I have a few updates to share.

I think the last unidentified book on the first chart is (view spoiler)

+1 hour of audio for The Ocean at the End of the Lane (total 1 hour)
+181 pages from The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, unless somebody finishes something before me it will fit prompt #31 (award winner) and #46 (used for ATY challenge). (Total 1,001 pages)

My plan for tomorrow is to finish at least one of the two books referenced above. The other will be finished on 1/1/19. I'd also like to find time for a fast reread of something easy just to bump up my page contributions.

I updated my page count and audiobook totals on the spreadsheet.

message 143: by Beth F (new)

Beth F | 63 comments Okay, so I also just updated the spreadsheet with the completed books and page counts since Sabrina's last check-in. Please take a look and make sure the numbers look right in case I totally screwed it up (I'm sorry if it's way off base!).

I did not make any changes to the line with the readathon games because I wasn't sure which game corresponded with the correct day.

message 144: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina | 393 comments Hey y'all thanks for updating for me in my absence! I had an unexpectedly busy day yesterday and got no reading done then. I'll go through all the comments I've missed and make sure everything got covered.

I did start and finish Shadow and Bone today! Tomorrow I'll do Siege and Storm and hopefully finally finish Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore. I'm not liking that one as much as I thought I would so it's slow going.

message 145: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina | 393 comments Just went through the comments of the past couple days and the spreadsheet is now up to speed.

Pending boxes: 25, 32, 36, 42, 43 (just completed by me, I really like the cover art for Shadow and Bone ), 44, and 47.

Sorry again for the absence! I try to check in every 24 hours or so but I essentially collapsed into bed last night lol.

Oh and for my 2019 plan, I think I'm starting with The Song of Achilles for the "nominated for or won an award in a genre you enjoy" prompt. I like to read multiple books at once so I'm also going to start The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle on audio for popsugar. Since Jan 1 is still the readathon, I'm probably gonna try to binge Ruin and Rising on that day too. I planned to finish that series before the end of 2018, but I'm only going to be able to finish book 2 tomorrow and I really want to finish the series before I start Six of Crows. I'm very excited for my 2019 challenges!

message 146: by Tracy (last edited Dec 30, 2018 11:37PM) (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments I finished Hey, Kiddo, but i don't think it fits for anything other than page counts .

115 pages.

I think I might set aside Temeraire #1 His Majesty's Dragon ( I kinda want to DNF at this point, but Im at 70% and i heard the ending is the best part, so I'm hoping that I'll feel the same as some others in the challenge groups).Planning on starting Force of Nature, because I think I can get through it tomorrow. I really liked the first book in the series ( The Dry).

I'm not sure what I'm going to start with for 2019? I pulled the first 4 books from each challenge as options and I have 14 holds in at the library. Its a good mix of Middle Grade, Non Fiction, and a bunch of others. I'm really excited about The Book of M, My Sister, the Serial Killer, The Woman in the Window, The Perfect Nanny, and The Marrow Thieves. Also my 2 nostalgia books for pop sugar ( Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret and Behind the Attic Wall). I'm going to try hard to push through this funk I'm in, its not even a reading slump, its just so much stress, because I was so excited about the plans I made for this coming year, and I don't want to let anyone ruin that for me. I think reading counts as self care which is something I really need to focus on right now.

I've also participated in all the games and have some laundry/cleaning to do tomorrow , so may be able to contribute some audio hours?

message 147: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments I have a few (probably daft) ideas for the connections on the boards. (view spoiler)

message 148: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I just realised that Ethan Frome counts for #26 (wintery cover), so I've added that to the spreadsheet.

I also just finished The Little Prince (a re-read), which I can add to my part of the children's book tally.
