Yes, that's the year and month when it was the group read, so not pub date.
Wow, I'm impressed. Is there an easy way to do this, or did you have to type in each book yourselves? Thanks. I like it.
Luckily mods have been tracking this for a bit so we only had to neaten it up! Anna (who will kill me for saying) is really really good at spreadsheets so she's got all sorts of great data for us to work with :-)
When you believe that you're doing a good job "catching up," then a list appears and you realize that you're still behind.
Allison wrote: "Haha! It's inspiration! You're doing great!"Thanks for the encouragement. I'll need it!
Allison wrote: "In case some of you don't receive the group newsletter, please find a link to the spreadsheet Anna and I released today. We'll update sporadically (likely 1-2 times a year), but it's a good startin..."That's a great collection of books. I had read several of them before I joined this group, but I guess I never thought of them as Fantasy. I had just labelled them as fiction. Now I know better!
I've got a whole ready-made list of books to read now, thanks to this list.
Thanks to YouKneeK, I've added the original pub year to the spreadsheet. Convenient for those who are doing the Time Traveler challenge.
I added a column for page count! Please note that the page counts are:
- from the edition that's linked on our group shelf
- most likely the default GR edition
- possibly inaccurate, since some are old, and data changes
- very different between editions
If you notice a glaring mistake with any data in the spreadsheet, please let me know here!
I added filter views to the spreadsheet to help with sorting. They should be self-explanatory. Get to them by clicking the little arrow on the right side of the filter button. You don't have to make a copy for yourself to use the filters.
A downloaded file you mean? I haven’t tested that, but it should work if you make a copy for yourself in Google Drive. File -> Make a Copy if I remember correctly. I’m on my phone so can’t check.
OK I tested it on my iPad (Sheets app), and yeah the filters aren't available. But in case someone is trying to make a copy for themself, it's Share & export -> Make a copy from the three dots. It looks like you can create filters on the Sheets app, but not use the ones I've pre-made. To filter things on the Sheets app, select Create a filter from the three dots. And to sort, select the column you want to sort, then tap it again to open a menu, and you'll find Sort A-Z / Sort Z-A from the end. To be clear, you don't need to use the filter function at all to sort, it's just a convenient way (on the laptop) to save different sort orders.I've never done anything but enter data in a pinch on the Sheets app, which is why I didn't even think someone would use it like that. I always do the Big Stuff on my laptop. But good news is you can still sort it, you just have to do it yourself.
I added instructions for how to make a copy for yourself and sort things to the top of this thread, and I also edited the filter post with better screenshots.Let me know if something is still unclear!
Adding thanks for this spreadsheet! The format is much easier to deal with than GR's interface, so the effort is much appreciated. I now have a "SFFBC-all" tab in a workbook with my other reading spreadsheets.
Because I'm a total nerd and have the sick insomnia, I decided to take the sheet, add some data for my personal reading (if I own it, and if I've read it), and generate some stats.Read: 101
Unread: 172
DNF: 6
owned: 91
Owned and Unread: 16
pages read: 42187 of 115159
Total Sci Fi read: 52 of 141
Total Fantasy read: 49 of 138
if you want to do the same, you can make a copy of my version here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
Just replace my yeses and nos with your own, and then look at the stats tab. (And yes spreadsheet nerds, I could have pivoted but sumproduct is more compact for putting it all together. Plus, I don't get to use it for esoteric things like this much any more)
Aaaah so cool, Lowell! I suck at creating Excel sheets but I can at least steal someone else's and edit with my own data XD
I did actually save a copy of the spreadsheet and marked those I'd read in yellow - I've read 51 on the group shelf. But I know I have a ton more on my TBR list so I think I'll make a column for that now ^^
Thanks!glad to know that someone will get some use out of my random middle of the night spreadsheeting.

Anna has instructions on how to make it work for ipad in Message 23! It should be the same for Lowell's.

The spreadsheet went through a major update this morning. It will update every month from now on, and there are tabs/sheets for different sort orders. Let me know if you notice anything wrong with it!
We also have a new GR account for group books. You can use it to:- Search and browse group books on shelves that can be sorted
- Compare books to see how many and what percentage of group books you've read or have on your TBR
- Look at some yearly statistics
Books will be added on the 1st of the month when the group starts reading them.
Please note this account is not monitored, so do not message it, etc. Please contact the mods by their personal accounts should you need to speak with a moderator.
You can easily find these links in Current Events:

hahaha!
Sorry, SFFBC account is a taciturn creature whose love is lists and objectivity. Subjective "ratings" are anathema to it.

wow, niceI only have 17 on my TBR list and 71 marked as read, but that list doesn't take into account omnibus/collected works books and books I read that weren't in Kindle version like
Storm Front = 6 book omnibus
A Game of Thrones = 4 book omnibus]
The Martian Chronicles = not on my list but I read it years ago
The War of the Worlds = in Complete works of the author
and a lot of others adding up to 107 read
Thanks! I cut and pasted this into a file of my own, then sorted it by title so I can review what I've already read and then go from there for 2020. Of course, I can resort it any way I like :)
Thanks for the Book account, Anna! This way I know that there are 30 books from the shelf I must hunt down, cause I forgot to put them on my TBR :D

I'm going to attempt the 7 wonders challenge and this will help so much. Thank you for doing this.
I'm starting this off handicapped. See, at least 7 books I've read recently aren't here: His Dark Materials plus the newest Pullman. And nothing by Grossman—the Magician's trilogy. It's not like these are obscure volumes by indie authors ;) But extra cool to have this. Thanks.
Haha there's a strange parabola of interest, wherein a book becomes SO POPULAR that nobody wants to read it as a group anymore because they've already read and re-read it so many times! Harry Potter is also conspicuously absent from the group shelf, among other notables. Sorry, you'll just have to find new books with us :D
Allison wrote: "Haha there's a strange parabola of interest, wherein a book becomes SO POPULAR that nobody wants to read it as a group anymore because they've already read and re-read it so many times! Harry Potte..."Ahhhh, gotcha. Means most of what I read probably isn't here either, but I'll dive in for fresh blood. As it were.
