Melindam | 8288 comments Emelie, tineye is an online tool that "helps" you determine the colour percentage of book covers. However, it drove most of us crazy during the Uno challenge, with its colour perception. ;)
It also changed its mind sometimes. What got confirmed as green during 1 month, was pronounced blue the next, etc.

Happy birthday to Pomona Sprout!

In recognition of her birthday and to promote house spirit before Quidditch starts, here are a few puzzles for your enjoyment. They are possible to do on a phone.

no way!!!!!! I tried out the English version of that cover yesterday, and it said red! Clearly you've the knack of getting Mad-Tineye-Moody to play nicely!

:)

I've started reading Last Time I Lied, which is an ARC, due to be published in July, so that's another class task tackled :)

As you guys have been so patient about the Classes tasks, a little sneak peek on the Care of Magical Creatures:

the first part of Care of Magical Creatures will be cover hunt. So, title doesn't count.

The main goal is to "build" your own creature. So imagine you have a wolf on the cover. You can say it has wolf teeth, wolf tail, wolf body, etc.
Or if you want to use the whole wolf, you can say it's a wolf, and then add 4 more characteristics, like it also has serpent scales, or eagle wings, butterfly antennae... etc.

Intruiging, eh?!

Sonia's going to be getting details up today (tomorrow at the outside) - Tower Teams has not been good to her health :(

Tineye is so infuriating!!! Unless you get lucky....then it's great.

The kids have been extra cranky these past few days, so I probably won't be around much until tonight.

Thanks for the update, Cat! Sorry to hear about Sonia :( I hope she's getting enough rest and feels better soon.

Will it be okay to add books we're still reading to the tracking SS and add read date when done? Makes it easier to track all the characters that way :)

Totally cool to add currently reading books to the sheet!

I want the sheet to be usable for you guys, as well as making it easier for Katie & I to report into the official one. So, yeah, add books as you start them / as you finish them. Feel free to snag tasks from the Class Info tab too - just not too many at a time - no more than... 3? feels fair. Be aware though, that I reserve the right to shuffle books about if it seems to fit better somewhere else...

If you add books to the tracker yourself then I don't mind if you don't include all the characters in the completion post.

Please DO include BR / BOM links in the completion post though. And Class options, when we get those...

A couple of points to note!

Non-fiction readers!
Re characters in non-fiction books, the ruling is that typically there won't be characters, except for e.g. memoirs, "where someone is recounting events and situations; then it is possible there would be characters."

I'd assume that a biography will fall into that memoir-type space, but to err on the side of caution, we'll only use the biography subject.

Why "err on the side of caution"? because if we claim a book against a Class task that doesn't fit we'll be awarded -ve points - at least -5, going up to -25 if we unsuccessfully challenge the Class Master!

Questions
Also, a reminder that if you have any questions, bring them to Katie or I here / via DM / on the tracker sheet. We'll either answer them, or take to the mods.
Mods are getting a bit frustrated at having to answer the same question multiple times, and/or chain of questions not being followed, and will penalise teams who ask the Mods questions that have already been answered.

To be clear - asking Katie / me here in the thread is absolutely fine! Katie & I will check the FAQs & with each other and only if necessary one of us will escalate to a Mod. Possible with gifts to placate them!

Katie | 1634 comments Good morning team!! Today is my little girl's last day of her first year of preschool. I'll be gone most of the afternoon, but will check in this evening. I've got a few books to post and will get to that at that point, too. :) Hope you're all having a great day!

Also, there is a BR for the sequel to Red Sister, Grey Sister, starting 1 July.

noooooooooo!

I've only gone and left my kindle at work!

noooooooooo!

I mean, it's not a complete catastrophe, as I have several hundred (meybe thousand...) books at home, plus audio, plus I could in theory read on my phone / ipad. but still....

noooooooooo!

message 176: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2131 comments Oh dear, Cat - at least it's not a Friday, that would be catastrophic. ;)

Hope those withdrawal symptoms are alleviated by other book formats. And the commute is survivable kindleless.

Katie - hope the picnic was/is rain free.

I can't get the June BOMs from the library, so won't be joining those. Still hoping I'll get hold of the May ones in time for points though.

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
Ironically, a Friday might be better - I could commit properly to a hardcopy! As it is I'm all of a pother...
It's not helped by the fact that I've finished my audio so I'm not sure what to pick up - a new audio this evening or a hardcopy....

So I've been catching up with TV shows instead!

message 178: by Katie (last edited May 16, 2018 12:40PM) (new)

Katie | 1634 comments Oh no! Leaving your kindle is the WORST!

The picnic was rain free, but it should have just rained because it was so humid I was sweating instead for a good 2-3 hours. Discomfort doesn't bother kids though, so they were having a great time despite the humidity. So, now it's bathtime for the kids because they're gross...really gross...

Ahhh! That's such an annoying mood to be in. Wanting to read, but not wanting to commit to a hardcopy since you gonna pick up the Kindle the next day anyway, not knowing what audio to start because you just finished one - I feel you!

Katie | 1634 comments Ah, I've only got 4 this time, but I'm getting my first books on the sheet! I'll add to our private sheet later on since it's late and I don't really have time right now to comb through the tasks. :)

I was happily, and excitably, reunited with my lovely Celia (my kindle) this morning! I did get strange looks from one of my colleagues, but she does know about my deep love for Celia, so she rolled with it rather than calling out men in white coats....

I've got just over an hour left on Home Fire, and then I shall be starting a BR of Lincoln in the Bardo

I'm asking the Mods to correctly assign the credit for Mad-Tineye to Melinda - it was genius!
and to call her Melinda, not Melissa.....

We'll get there in the end! At which point, this comment is going to look very odd!

OK, I am not sure I got the History of Magic tasks, but the rest is more or less clear.

Emelie | 415 comments Melindam - I am figuring that we could use any book for History of Magic, as long as the titles together can be strung into a little essay that makes sense.

OK, I've added notes where notes are necessary on this tab

As far as how you guys want to play this we could:

a) Focus on spells now as a team - in our tracker until we've got complete words, then moving into the official for the points
Pros: the sooner we are done, the sooner we can stop tracking @#!!*@ character letters
Cons: might be a bit boring

b) Focus on classes now, putting books that don't work for classes / with priority letters (X, U, Y, I, O, A, E, R - based on difficult & frequency) into the Spells
Pros: a bit more exciting when looking for books
Cons: having to record all those letters

c) Something else: Mix 'n' match? Like.... I dunno - if you wanted to claim a Standard spell as your own to master?

I'm tempted to our backlog into Classes for the moment - I'll do some work on what that might look like and report back....

Please shout if you have preferences, now that we know more about Classes

I wonder about the pairing of
Dark Queen (Jane Yellowrock, #12) by Faith Hunter and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) by J.K. Rowling
for Transfiguration of fierce woman fighter into queen chess piece - both are holding blades too ? - I'm pretty sure that's the queen piece, based on the story and the look - kings are usually pointier of top, right?

Oh, that looks like a perfect match! They are both holding blades and I'm pretty certain it's the Queen piece too, given the story and all.

As for the options, I think I'd favour B. In the beginning it seems the more fun to do, give a little to both Spells and Classes depending where they work the best.

Charms: looks like it needs to be a before and after, and is looking for cover or title

Summoning/Banishing: I'm thinking of clothed person <-> nekkid person matches, which should be an easy fill with our romance reader extraordinaire, Katie!

Who might also be providing a lot of our DADA creatures / baddies!

ETA, though I'm worrying if we might be Cutthroated if we tried it for summoning...
