Lamilla | 818 comments I heard a lot of different things about the book, Ann A, seems worth reading!

I finished another two books and with them - my pre-readathon challenges, hurray. I'll go easy on my planned reading for now, to be fresh for the readathon weekend

Yipee! Lamilla. Sounds like a good plan.

message 403: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments Guys, I need your help for the challenge on my bingo board.
Here are 3 books, please select one you think I should read!

1. Охота на маленькую щуку by Juhani Karila by Juhani Karila
2. Серотонин by Michel Houellebecq by Michel Houellebecq
3. Кто читает сердце тьмы. Первый профайлер Южной Кореи в погоне за серийными убийцами by 권일용 by 권일용

I'll start the one that gets most votes

message 404: by Vavita (new)

Vavita | 159 comments Based on the cover , I would say option 1

message 405: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments I can‘t figure out what the third one is. Option 1, Fishing for the Little Pike by Juhani Karila, sound oddly weird and could be fun.

message 406: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments I heard that it is fun to read, too, Cathy

The third one is a non-fiction, here is the annotation: The author of the book is the first profiler of South Korea and a direct participant in the events described. His story formed the basis of the drama "THOSE WHO READ THE HEART OF DARKNESS" - about the criminologists of South Korea who created profiling in the country as a science and investigated the cases of famous Korean serial killers.

I just read a book about supposed serial killer to for a selection from a Horror bingo card, just for fun. Mary Ann Cotton: Dark Angel: Britain's First Female Serial Killer. Great minds think alike :)

I have watched a good number of Neil deGrasse Tyson YouTube videos. He can explain things well. . . . Have you read his Astrophysics for People in a Hurry? Let me know what you think of Accessory to War.

message 413: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments Have fun, ladies! I am totally unprepared… 😝

message 414: by Kate (new)

Kate | 643 comments Don't know if you're still taking votes but I'd go for book 1. It has the highest 5 star ratings of the 3 and I like the sound of a fantasy in Lapland. Hope you enjoy it if you end up reading it.

Ann A (readerann) | 867 comments Looks like you're all ready to go, Lamilla. Hope you have a great reading weekend!

message 416: by Lamilla (last edited Oct 26, 2024 02:52AM) (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments Thank you everyone who stopped by! Let's have a fun readathon

I haven't read anything by Neil deGrasse Tyson yet, Cynda!

Book 1 is leading (3 votes vs 0 for other choices), Kate! I'll announce the winner at the start of the readathon, so there is still chance to choose something else ))

As an opening survey:
My goal for this readathon is to read as much as possible, considering other commitments (I have a book club discussion of Ubik this evening). I would love to finish one or two books, but it looks unlikely.
I'm very curious about Accessory to War: The Unspoken Alliance Between Astrophysics and the Military and Yellowface, hope to start them both.
I'd love to close the bingo board, although I never managed to do it during the 48 hours of the readathon. Couple of lines would be fun
I usually don't stick to TBR, let's see if having it anyway helps me with my reading.

Good luck everyone, see you during the first reading sprint!

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments > I haven't read anything by Neil deGrasse Tyson yet, Cynda!

Me neither! I watched a video and I am leaning towards audio for him. So far he is part of my want-to-read.

Good luck, have fun with the first sprint! I‘ll be in the woods, walking with a friend and her dog… 😝

Lamilla | 818 comments So, starting the first reading sprint with The House of Silk by Anthony Horowitz by Anthony Horowitz. His Holmes and Watson are quite believable, I definitely get the Conan Doyle vibe!

A good start with a good book! Enjoy your reading day Lamilla.

message 423: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments The reading sprint was a success! Reading Horowitz' Holmes made me want to reread some of the original (maybe I'll try tomorrow)
I'm back from my reading club (the discussion was also a success) and I'm too tired for reading today. I'll walk my dog and be back in the morning.

Have a great reading time, everyone!

I posted my hour 18 thread, now to walk the dog and get back to reading! I'll continue with The House of Silk and will try Охота на маленькую щуку for my challenge!

message 426: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments I read 40 pages of Охота на маленькую щуку, I liked what I read. I'll continue with The House of Silk, it is so fast paced I might finish it today

I listened to Музыка и мозг by Are Brean for the hour 20 reading sprint and read to page 136 of Horowitz' Holmes. Now I need to read something for my bingo board, to make it brighter ))

message 445: by Lamilla (last edited Apr 15, 2025 10:37AM) (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments I'll use the remaining days for the pre-readathong challenges:

1.Spring back/into/from Home. Maybe the journey is to or from an ancestral, family, physical or emotional or spiritual home. Here is an opportunity to read all those wild and wacky books where the main character goes on adventures and learn all kinds of stuff. Or maybe you want a go into home story maybe about family secrets which can be a spooky story or a revelation.

2. Spring into Truth. What is something true for you? How do you find some truth? What does a fine job of describing or explaining or somehow illuminating some of your truth? Here is an opportunity to read fairytale and folktales, retellings, and books with unexpected insights.

3. Spring into Power. Who has some power you admire? Is there power or energy that you can put into use in your life? What books describes what you find powerful within yourself/family/work life/community/place of service. Here is an opportunity to read about witches and wizards and old talking trees of the forest.

4. Spring out in song/poetry/words Is there speech moment that speaks to you, enlightens you, brings you peace or joy or hope, or otherwise lights up something in you? Here is an opportunity to read a biography of one of your favorite writers, singers, actors, performers. Or maybe you want to read a play/script. Maybe you would to read a book about the backstory of a movie, song, speech.

5. Spring into Freedom. What brings you joy to experience, to read about, to know is in the world working toward and reaching for good in your family/home/neighborhood/something dear to you? Here is an opportunity to read books on the experience of fighting for good causes and for starting new ways of doing that improve many people's lives.

6. Spring into Joy. What brings you some joy/a great deal of joy/belief that you can find joy? Read a book on the topic ;) Maybe that will too add joy.

Some books that I'm currently reading fit the challenge:
Spring into Power - The Financier by Theodore Dreiser which depicts the main character growing into power
Spring into Truth - Империя боли by Patrick Radden Keefe which is an investigation of the Opioid Crisis in the USA in the 90s
Spring out in song/poetry/words - Урания by Joseph Brodsky - a poetry collection
