Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments New beginnings and growth.. how about The Midnight Library? Or Starling House? Also new beginnings and death…

Lamilla | 818 comments I like how you connect things, Cathy! I'll look it up. Several days are still left, so I'm optimistic )

I'm reading the following books at the moment:
The City & the City by China Miéville (reread)
Upgrade by Blake Crouch
Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End by Atul Gawande
The Lucifer Effect: Understanding How Good People Turn Evil by Philip G. Zimbardo (this one is huge and the topic is heavy, I doubt I finish it soon)
Wayfinding: The Science and Mystery of How Humans Navigate the World by M.R. O'Connor (adventure/science party here!)

If I find party in any of them, I'll include it in Level one challenge (looking not promising so far :D )

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments Wood… have you read the Liveship Trader trilogy by Robin Hobb? Ship of Magic is the first one. Very good, but long. The wood has certain properties and the traders bring their wooden ships to life…

message 355: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments I need to add it to my reading list, thank you, Cathy. I read The Inheritance, I think I liked the writing style

message 356: by Cathy (last edited Jul 22, 2024 11:12AM) (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments Hmmm, if you get hooked on the series, I will get told off by my buddies for leading you to the second trilogy in the Realm of the Elderlings… 😜
But I read Assassin's Apprentice afterwards as well and survived… 😏

message 373: by Nona (new)

Nona | 138 comments I adore The City and the City and I just bought a used copy of Embassytown last weekend. I'm not planning on reading it this weekend because I've got too many books already on my TBR, but I've heard good things. Hope you enjoy it!

message 374: by Susy (new)

Susy (susysstories) | 2288 comments Love Blake Crouch's books, havent read this one yet though.

The City & the City is still my favourite out of two! I adore Mieville's imagination, both books are 10/10 on this for me

Susy wrote: "Love Blake Crouch's books, havent read this one yet though.

My favourite of his is Dark Matter!

Cynda wrote: "Reading Count of Monte Cristo, Lamilla? Hats off!"
I don't think, not in the coming years. When I read it in adolescence, I wasn't impressed, and now the size just intimidates me ))

message 379: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments So, my final update:

I read from Embassytown in the evening, yay! And that was it for the readathon for me. Overall I read from 3 books, hasn't finished anything.
I participated in 2 reading sprints (both with Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End) and filled some squares on my bingo board (but got no line)

message 380: by Cathy (last edited Jul 28, 2024 01:51AM) (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments I did participate in 3 sprints, I think, but didn‘t mention it specifically.
I don‘t think I ever read The Count of Monte Christo, but Im not sure. I did have a go at The Man in the Iron Mask, but couldn‘t get into it.

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments That was fun! See you during our next shadow reading weekend…

message 386: by Lamilla (new)

Glad you like it Lamilla :) In the spring, I will do something similiar, choosing idioms with the word "spring" in them.

message 392: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments I'm on a book-buying ban for the whole of October and November. Naturally, I splurged on books on the last day of September :D

My pre-readathon is going well, I finished one book already and I'm over the half for two others.

message 393: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments Good to read, have fun with your planned books!

message 394: by Lamilla (last edited Oct 10, 2024 06:45AM) (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments I'm done with Feynman and I also finished another non-fiction Как быть стоиком: Античная философия и современная жизнь by Massimo Pigliucci. With these books I closed two lines in the Chinese Elements challenge. Another book I'm reading, a murder mystery Совы охотятся ночью by Anthony Horowitz fits Metal element and also is a part of Fall challenge. Fingers crossed I finish it before the end of the pre-readathon.

message 395: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments I started Когда-то там были волки which fits Fall in love challenge (love for nature and animals) and Чисто британское убийство which addresses murder and publics admiration with it. I updated both challenges, very happy with my progress (and with the books I'm reading)!

message 396: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments Interesting choices. I‘m not much into literary fiction. And I rather read the crime novel than read about its history or its author. Although knowing about the author and the time period a book was written in obviously adds a lot to the understanding of a novel.

Good choice: Once There Were Wolves :) Another GR friend said that wolves play an important part of ecological health. Some years ago I read Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver which had a wolf and perhapa other apex predators. (Household cats are.apex predators--amazing.)

That's true! I'm not too happy with the book, her style is too dry for this topic (same with here Jane Austen bio I read previously)

Cynda wrote: "Another GR friend said that wolves play an important part of ecological health.
The book focuses a lot on wolves, so I watched a video on small miracle the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone park. It was amazing!
