Lamilla | 818 comments I have an unplanned family visit which will eat some of my time. Still hope to read as much as possible, though

My TBR for the readathon:
Воспоминания великого князя Александра Михайловича by Александр Михайлович Романов (currently reading)
Нищета мозга by Сергей Вячеславович Савельев
Erebos (Erebos, #1) by Ursula Poznanski (currently reading)
Москва место встречи by Lyudmila Ulitskaya (short stories collection, started some time ago but never finished)
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
Fresh Water for Flowers by Valérie Perrin (an audiobook)
The Last Migration by Charlotte McConaghy (an audibook, currently reading)
Accessory to War The Unspoken Alliance Between Astrophysics and the Military by Neil deGrasse Tyson (an audiobook)
plus I might read something else based on my mood

I've done as much as I could for my pre-readathon bingo, happy with the result

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 1435 comments Nice!!

This reminds me I need to get serious on charging more of my items tonight.

I hope you have a great read-a-thon!

Kamilla, I hope you enjoy both your family visit and reading time. . . . .I did not choose a Neil Gaiman this time, but I consistently do because his books are such delights. Enjoy!

message 255: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments I started the readathon with Neverwhere. My copy is, apparently, author preferred edition. Enjoying it so far!

Progress! Enjoy your reading today!

message 258: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments Thanks! Made good progress on Neverwhere - the story keeps me interested . Going to sleep now to continue in the morning

message 259: by Susy (new)

Susy (susysstories) | 2288 comments Sleep well! I'm about to do the same. See you tomorrow !

message 260: by Lamilla (last edited Oct 22, 2023 01:32AM) (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments Started my morning reading with 40 pages of Воспоминания великого князя Александра Михайловича. Interesting, that more than 100 years ago people were feeling exactly the same and called the time they were living in dreadful

message 261: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments I'm one challenge away from getting a line on my bingo board. I'll try to listen to 30 min of an audiobook - Fresh Water for Flowers

message 262: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments Erebos sounds interesting! So does The Last Migration, but maybe a bit too „literary fiction“ for my taste…

message 263: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments The Last migration reads like a memoir of an ornithologist to be honest! I doubt I'll get to it in the next three hours, since I really enjoy Fresh Water for Flowers and I'd like to know what happens next in Neverwhere

I was fast asleep during the half point, so I'm filling the survey now )

Half-Point Progress Report

How many books have you been reading? Have you finished any?
3 so far, including Neverwhere I started in the evening and was really sad to put down to get some sleep!

Are you on track with respect to your readathon goals so far?
Much better than I expected, especially considering that Neverwhere and Fresh Water for Flowers both turned out to be very interesting

Have you eaten real food today? What was your favorite food or beverage so far?
Millet porridge and tea! Extremely easy to cook and delicious )

Have you been participating in any of the activities on our social media?
Missed the reading sprints, hope to participate in a closing one. Checking my bingo board (really close to having a line)

Are you growing sleepy? Do you plan to nap, or stop early, or are you extending the readathon hours to include sleep?
I had a full night sleep and walked my dog before that, so full of energy at the moment

Have you been outside yet today? Have you had much exercise (besides the heavy lifting required to hold your book)?
No excercise apart from walking my dog

How is your readathon going, overall?
Enjoying it very much

message 264: by Vicki Willis (new)

Vicki Willis | 510 comments What a lucky dog! Does your dog stare at you when it is time for a walk?
My dog insists on walking every morning and every night. She helps me get all my steps in for the day!

message 265: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments Vicki Willis wrote: "She helps me get all my steps in for the day!" Mine too! She is a spaniel so needs at least 2 hours a day

Lamilla | 818 comments Closing survey
1. Which hour was most daunting for you?
in the morning time flew really fast and I missed a reading sprint, which was a pity!

2. Tell us ALLLLL the books you read!
continued Воспоминания великого князя Александра Михайловича by Александр Михайлович Романов
started and made good progress on Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
started listening to Fresh Water for Flowers by Valérie Perrin

3. Which books would you recommend to other Read-a-thoners?
last two picks could be good for either Gaiman-lovers or someone fascinated by life and death

4. What’s a great thing we could do during the next Read-a-thon that would make you smile?
works already for me as it is

5. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again?
Would you be interested in volunteering to help organize and prep?

I'm a regular by now, enjoying this time very much

message 267: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments Overall I'm happy that I had a variety of books and formats to choose from and I enjoyed 3 books I read. I also had time for a walk outside, cooked and did some other chores, so it was a balanced weekend for me. Next time I would love to have more time for reading, but life does sometime get in the way )

Oh good. You are enjoying Neverehere. It is a good book. Now I am becoming curious about How the Marquis Got His Coat Back. Let me know what you think after you finish reading ☺️

Sounds like a good readathon weekend, Lamilla! Indeed, sometimes life gets in the way. One can not foresee everything but I do tend to plan ahead my weekend, let certain people like my parents know only to call me in case of life or death emergency.

See you in April hopefully!

message 270: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments I really enjoyed the BBC dramatization of Neverwhere! I never read the book.
Neverwhere: BBC Dramatisation

The comic was pretty good as well… Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere

Oh, yes, the TV adaptation of Good Omens is fantastic…

Lamilla | 818 comments Thank you ladies!

Cool down week:
23.10: I managed to finish the main part of Воспоминания великого князя Александра Михайловича by Александр Михайлович Романов yesterday, now going through letters and journal entries.
ETA: finished Воспоминания великого князя Александра Михайловича, solid 5 stars. Listened a bit of Fresh Water for Flowers by Valérie Perrin and now back to Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman

24.10: Finished Neverwhere. Maybe I'll try something from my readathon TBR next

25.10: I started Нищета мозга by Сергей Вячеславович Савельев from my readathon TBR (still not a match for "Present" of my "Time" challenge! Works for "timeless" section, though). Also continuing with Erebos (Erebos, #1) by Ursula Poznanski

26.10 Finished Нищета мозга. Continuing with Erebos (Erebos, #1) by Ursula Poznanski and listening to Fresh Water for Flowers by Valérie Perrin

27-29.10: Continuing with Erebos (Erebos, #1) by Ursula Poznanski . The book is as exciting as the game it depicts

"Time" challenge

✔ Past - Воспоминания о России
✔ Present - Erebos
Future - The Last Migration (currently reading)

✔ In Time - Страницы моей жизни
✔ Out of Time - The Child in Time

My list:

Level One: Space: Cardinal Directional
DONE East - Когда причиняют добро (author is from South Korea, which is part of the East Asia)
DONE West - На Западном фронте без перемен (West in the title)
DONE North - Здесь была Бритт-Мари (Sweden is in the Northern Europe)
South - Богоматерь Нильская (set in Rwanda, Africa)

Level Two: Perpendicular
DONE Up - Сато (deals with the officer of the space fleet trapped on Earth in a body of a small kid)
DONE Down - Что-то не так с Гэлвинами (the book studies schizophrenia, so talks a lot about our brain, which is deep inside us)

Hi Lamilla. Have you participated in Jaime's keyword challenge which is listed in the April 2024 Pre-readathon thread?

message 283: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments Hi Cynda, no, I haven't

message 284: by Cynda (new)

Cynda | 1654 comments Mod
It is described in the same thread where you found the directional challenge. If you are not on the sites Jaime names, just post there or here on your thread.

message 285: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments i don't think I would do any more challenges before the readathon itself. Just finished 200 pages a day - that was tough!

message 286: by Cynda (new)

Hi Lamilla, did you find the bingo board? I know there's a version on the Facebook group if you're a member of that.

message 288: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments Hi Kate, not yet. I'm not a member of the facebook group, the site is banned here :)

Lamilla | 818 comments Ladies, I would need your help with one of the challenges from my bingo board.

Here are three books from my TBR:
Delivery Room by Sylvia Brownrigg Accessory to War The Unspoken Alliance Between Astrophysics and the Military by Neil deGrasse Tyson The Radetzky March (Von Trotta Family, #1) by Joseph Roth

Please comment your selection. I will read the book that gets most votes :)

message 292: by Kate (new)

Kate | 643 comments The Radetzky March looks really interesting. I'd go for that one.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 1435 comments If I were picking for myself, would go with Delivery Room

message 294: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments The Radetzky March. The therapist's couch is not my thing. I wouldn‘t want to read about real war.

message 295: by Vavita (new)

Vavita | 159 comments This one sounds interesting: The Radetzky March

message 296: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments The Radetzky March is a leader at the moment! I'll wait till the start of the readathon, in case some more votes come and change the result

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 1435 comments

Susy (susysstories) | 2288 comments Happy readathon!

message 299: by Lamilla (last edited Apr 13, 2024 04:52AM) (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments Almost there indeed!
I'm opening the readathon with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Harry Potter, #6) by J.K. Rowling , which I started some time before the event

Next I'll go to Марш Радецкого (Von Trotta Family, #1) by Joseph Roth which got the most votes. It would have been my choice as well!

message 300: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla | 818 comments The first reading sprint went well! I managed to stay focused for the whole hour - luckily, there were no distrations. I went through a couple of chapters in both books.

Now I'll have a break with a cup of tea and a nice piece of cake. It's called "Fairytale", was a hit in my youth
