Sorry, Christelle, somehow I missed your comment. :( You are right, debating about it face to face would be great. LOL. Yeah, I don't really think this author's writing style is for me (although I really liked the first half and thought it would work this time for me), but Claire Davis's is not for me, either. LOL. We are on the same page there. ;-)

Okay, I'll grab my coffee and then I will start, since you all will leave me eating your dust anyway. ;-)

Christelle Hello Simone : I'm there as well :-)
I hope you enjoyed your nap after taking care of Jamilah. Get comfy and let's resume together.

I hope that I won't read too fast. But you know me, when I love a book, nothing can stop me, LOL. And I sincerily hope that you will get back your initial enthusiasm : it's always better to end on a satisfying note than on a disappointed one :-(

Let's go !!!!

Simone - on indefinite hiatus - Seems like here's a heavy thunderstorm coming our way, there's a warning on the internet and I already hear thunder in the distance. If you don't hear from me for a while my internet is gone, okay?

No problem, Simone. And I won't say more not to jinx it :-(

Simone - on indefinite hiatus - I need a hug! I hate thunderstorms... *ugly crying*
Okay, I don't want to sound b*tchy again, but I think what's bothering me here is that it's all a bit convenient. Colin's money, his job... I would be interested in how they would fare if that wouldn't be the case...

Christelle Reading about HIV always reminds me the movie "Philadelphia". I've seen it several times and keep crying like a baby at the exact same scenes !!

Simone - on indefinite hiatus - Christelle wrote: "Reading about HIV always reminds me the movie "Philadelphia". I've seen it several times and keep crying like a baby at the exact same scenes !!"

Ahem... *cough*... I haven't seen it once. :( But only because I'm not a fan of Tom Hanks. ;-)

LOL : of course, it's convenient ;-) It's for the sake of writing a fiction. Don't you think it was convenient for Royce to get a boyfriend who had a plane, a thief at hand and so on to help him get his mother back, LOL !!!
If only it was so easy to stumble on your true mate with everything needed to make life easier, it would be so great. Bit in the fiction world, it happens, yeah !!!

I didn't like Tom Hanks at all before that movie (like : oh...with Tom Hanks, it's a no then) but he really impressed me in that one. And there's Denzel Washington, mmm....

LOL. Of course you are right. But for me there's a difference in fiction... The other series is pure fiction, but this one here has a touch of 'real' to it and I just wish the author would have found a different way than to make it sound like Hernán hit the jackpot with Colin. ;-)

Josy Hi, ladies!
I just got back home and Amy is already sleeping, lol! Poor girl is exhausted.
I got 3/4 through chapter 23 and I'm at 67% at the break in the chapter. How are you doing so far?

I hope you all had a great day/morning!
I wasn't online all day so I hadn't had time to read through your comments yet. Sorry!

Simone - on indefinite hiatus - Christelle wrote: "Simone wrote: "Christelle wrote: "Reading about HIV always reminds me the movie "Philadelphia". I've seen it several times and keep crying like a baby at the exact same scenes !!"

Granted, that's a good reason. LOL. But I would rather go for Antonio Banderas, hahahaha.

Christelle Hello Josy **wave**
Glad that Amy had a great time (still laughing that she had a date).

I am at 63%. Simone and I started only a few minutes ago :-)

I can imagine that she's done with the world for today. LOL. I'm still in chapter 22 at 63%. :)

True! It's just that she didn't give so much as a peep today, that had me worried a bit. :)

~BIG hugs~

Actually, I was thinking about this last night and I'm still not sure what I'd have preferred and I can't make up my mind.
On the one hand, I love that it's so convenient because I know that Hernán has the best chances to get help and achieve his goals. I want this for him so desperately that I don't mind him having some "divine" help and everything falling into place for him. It's fiction and romance, after all, and authors write what, ultimately, will make them happy.
On the other hand, I wondered what other immigrants would make of this, who aren't so lucky in the end.

You are right! Of course it's good for Hernán to get what he needs, but the whole thing leaves a slightly bitter taste as 99% of the immigrants won't have so much luck. Despite knowing this being fiction and all...

Simone - on indefinite hiatus - Starting chapter 24 now and I'm glad(view spoiler)

It's hard for me to make up my mind about this because I never was in a situation like this and I hope I never will be and I don't want to presume what people who have been are thinking and feeling.
Maybe they take strength from a story like this or maybe they are angry and feel the injustice. I just don't know. And because I don't, I have decided to take it as it is without judging.

For me, it's easier to judge the "convenience" of a story when I know it's pure fiction. Somehow, knowing large parts of this story are true, makes it more difficult and I don't feel I have the right to judge. I'm sure that's hypocritical and unfair to "pure fiction" stories but that's how I feel.

Also, sensitivity readers have read the book and corrected some things and who am I to say they are wrong?

It didn't even cross my mind as to what other readers who might have had this experience would think about it. Sorry. It's just for me that everything is too convenient. Like I said to Christelle, I divide fiction into pure, where I'm able to suspend my disbelief and into 'real' where I'm not. I'm just saying that I would have wished for the author to make it feel a bit more real to me.

Josy Simone wrote: "Like I said to Christelle, I divide fiction into pure, where I'm able to suspend my disbelief and into 'real' where I'm not. ..."

I do, too, but for me, it's easier to judge pure fiction. Here, the author has free rein and can write everything in a way that it makes it sound real and believable.
I don't know which parts of this story are true and which are fiction and embellished. The author only mentioned that chapter 16 and 19 aren't based on RL and he mentioned that the journey to the U.S. is mostly real but I don't know if the author's friends met some rich guy who helped them. And I don't feel good judging someone's real life. Does this make sense? I don't know how to explain it better.

It's okay, Josy, you don't have to explain. We already agreed on seeing things differently sometimes. LOL. I'm not judging someone else's life here, I'm judging the book. I haven't read the blog post or whatever by the author, so I don't know what's real or not either. All I'm saying is that the outcome here is a bit too convenient for me to fully buy it. :)

Hi, sorry I just got here and was reading all the comments, I'm a little confused because the last message I read said that we were starting at 4 p.m. your time and 10 a.m. my time, it's only 9:30 here now so I actually thought I was early. Anyways, it looks like I'm way behind again so I'm just going to go read and see if I've got a hope of getting caught up with you all and I'll pop in later to see what's how it's going for everyone.

Update: hey guess what I just realized collectively our mathing yesterday sucked...because 4 p.m. your time is in fact 8 a.m. my time. So as I said I'll just be over in the corner reading trying to catch up.

I get it! I felt the same until I thought about it last night when I was trying to calm down after being so pissed off, lol!

I'm making sure to always read the dedication and author's note if they are at the beginning of a book. I really don't know why Kindle books don't open at the title page but at the first chapter.

Nope, just means I should have gone back to Ontario sooner because if I was there we would have been on track!!! Damned rednecks who can't function with daylight savings time...we're blaming it all on the rednecks...ok?

Also...I looked at the 4 p.m./10 a.m. and it looked fine to me...just sayin'...more proof that I got left too long amidst the rednecks...they're rubbing off on me seriously next thing you know I'm going to be going out shopping for a double wide.

No, I made a mistake, I assume it :-)
As for daylight savings time, it's all an illusion and one of this stupid regulations that is hard to get ride of. So fortunatley, there is a chance that by 2 or 3 years, there won't be a summer/winter time in Europe, YEAH.
