Welcome Blue Team! This is your team's official strategy thread. This thread is all yours to use as you please.

If you need to reacquaint yourself with the rules for the Team Battleship Challenge, they're all posted over here.

Ultimately, your goal is to blast the five ships hidden on your board out of the water. There is one 5-Block ship, one 4-Block ship, two 3-Block ships, and one 2-Block ship hidden.

Welcome Blue Team, I’m looking forward to reading along with everyone. :-)

I have shamelessly borrowed Laura’s grid and tracker so I can update this to keep track of our progress, including how many guesses our team earns and when we’ve used them.

I can earn guesses for our team by completing tasks but you guys will have to use the guesses as the mods have a map of the ships so I’m not allowed to guess!

Targets
5-Block ship (D3, D4, D5, D6, D7)
4-Block ship (C6, C7, C8, C9)
3-Block ship (H5, I5, J5)

2-Block ship (I12, J12)

Rachelnyc | 943 comments Hi Blue Team! Loving the format of this read-a-thon and really looking forward to it!

I have two books I'm currently reading and four more library books already out that I'm hoping to get to during the read-a-thon. I'll have to look later at which prompts the others fit but You fits the following prompts:

One word title
Thriller
Female author
Published outside Major 5
Red on cover (not sure if it has to be entirely red or if this fits You (You, #1) by Caroline Kepnes

I finished the last book I was reading yesterday and I actually think I'm gonna wait until tomorrow to start the next - saving my reading energy for the upcoming week, haha. YAY! Looking forward to rocking this read-a-thon with all of you!! :)

Good morning team..... I’m confused already lol.
I currently have 2 books started and am less than 30% with both of them . I can’t link here on the app but they are Peony in Love by Lisa See and The Lost Memory of Skin by Russell Banks. I’ll have to check back in when I get out of work, but I’m hoping to finish up those two this weekend for the challenge.

Peony in Love
Lost Memory of Skin

message 9: by Hilde (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 787 comments I am also confused, Tracy, haha. But I guess we learn as we go ;) This is going to be fun!

I am currently reading Liv andre har levd (audio), and have approx 50 % left. So this can fit the "finish a book started before the Read-a-Thon" as well as others.

I am planning to read The Complete Persepolis, which can fit the graphic novel in addition to others. I have read 1 page so far, so will wait to start it until tomorrow.

I will check which other categories these can fill when I get back home from work.

message 10: by Marina H (new)

Marina H | 1315 comments I'm working on My Not So Perfect Life which we could use for the green cover in read the rainbow My Not So Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella .
I've also just started Huset ved Riverton and both books are for the ATY challenge.

I went to the library today and brought home 5 books so I should be all the set!

message 11: by Rachelnyc (new)

Rachelnyc | 943 comments Glad I'm not the only one confused. I re-read the instructions and I guess we don't have to worry too much about which category a book matches since we can have multiple guesses per category?

Marina H | 1315 comments Rachelnyc wrote: "Glad I'm not the only one confused. I re-read the instructions and I guess we don't have to worry too much about which category a book matches since we can have multiple guesses per category?"

The only tasks we need to sort of plan are the ones that require we work together such as read the rainbow, listen to 20 hours audio and a few others like that.
As I understand it each book we read can count for one task unless it's one of the tasks marked ⚡And we don't need to complete every task, though it would be fun if we did 😊.

Hi team, sorry if anyone is finding the game confusing! I’ll do my best to answer any questions so just shout if there’s anything you’re not sure about.

Other than the tasks marked ⚡ we can repeat tasks so as Rachelnyc says, we don’t need to worry if two people want to read a book that matches the same category.

We will need to coordinate for the ⚡tasks though because they can’t be repeated and for some there is a limit to how much each team member can contribute, eg if we want to earn a guess for reading ten books then we need at least five people working on the task as each person can only contribute two books to the total.

Same here! I was sure it started next week, and I think that's actually the week I voted for. In hindsight, this week actually works better for me since I have absolutely no plans for this weekend, and I have next Friday off!

Kathy Jo (kjsotr) | 262 comments Hello team!

Confession time: I started The House of Seven Gables before the last readathon. I decided it was going to be a slow read, so I moved on to get more books finished. I STILL haven't finished it, and I only finished one book since the last read-a-thon. So hopefully I can finish the darn thing tomorrow and count it for started before the read-a-thon. I am using it as my gothic novel for ATY.

I have several short stories lined up, so I should be able to do that too.

Also was planning on working on my middle grade and picture books challenges , so I can cover those tasks easy. I have a stack in my room.

Hi Bryony,

So I have a question for the prompts that can be repetitive. For example, for the author task we need to read two books to get a prompt completed. But for most of the others, it only has to be one (genre prompt for instance). Will you get two quesses for the author task per prompt or just one? Otherwise it would be wiser to chose the prompt where we only have to read one book. Hope that wasn't to unclear.

From what I've read this year I'm going to throw a recommendation out there : The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder. This book blew my mind. I think its a great read for anyone who's into non-fiction and/or works in the healthcare field, or is interested in law in general.

What I loved most about it was that it wasn't the Killer that had me saying " OMFG"!!!!!!!!

message 34: by Kathy Jo (new)

Kathy Jo (kjsotr) | 262 comments Tracy- I read that book last year on the recommendation of a coworker. Definitely recommend it. Amazing his sickness and the way the hospitals covered it up!

I will recommend another nonfiction. Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, about a young man who wanderfps around for a few years and ends up dying in Alaska. (Not a spoiler, he tells us he dies at the very beginning.)

Thank you Tracy, but I am still left wondering. Should the author tasks perhaps have lighting signs since they require multiple books?

message 36: by Marina H (new)

Marina H | 1315 comments We're visiting some friends this evening, so I won't be reading much more this first day.
But I finished My not so perfect life and it can count towards A book for the ATY challenge and A book started before the read-a-thon.
I've also read for two hours straight today. And we could use it as a romance book.

Maybe I'll check in later tonight 😊

Hilde, the intention is that the team needs to read two books to complete those tasks and earn a guess. But of course you’re right that people may want to count books for tasks that offer a guess for completing just one book. Unless we do want to aim to finish all the tasks, of course! :-)

Thank you, Bryoni. I got the intention, but it wouldn't be very clever for us as a team to chose those, as we would earn more guesses by choosing the one book prompts. Unless we wanted to go for all, like you said ;)

I took up the question in the general thread as well, and Laura just got back to me saying that she had changed the rules, and that the author prompts now have a lightning sign:)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2472 comments Mod
oh my good ness, just when I think I've figured it out.....

Bryony, so can any tasks without lightning be overlapped ( one book used for multiple tasks earning multiple guesses?)

For example: I am reading Peony in Love which could fit for
historical fiction or romance
more than ten years old
a spring cover
and/or female author

once finished does it then count for all the tasks finished, and if I read another book by a female author would I then have also completed that task?

Also, for some of the tasks with limitations
again read 2 books by a female author... 1 per member....does that mean I could read 2 books by a female author ( or 2 graphic novels) to win a guess but then not complete that task again? Or does it mean that 2 members each have to read 1 book by a female author to complete the task?

Then some look like team tasks, finish 15 books, 5 members each have to read 3 books for this one?
and
read 20 hours of audio.... 4 people would each have to read 5 hours on audio for this task

Sorry....you poor thing, thats a lot of questions. I hope they make sense.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's opposite, i.e the lightning one are the ones that can be overlapped but not repeated, whilst the others can be repeated, but not overlapped.

I would have gotten through it, but I was distracted by the first amazingly sunny & warm day in months, and took the opportunity to clean off the balcony and do some Spring cleaning. My back aches.

It could count for quite a few of the topics, but the child main character is probably the best one to pencil it in for.

Hannah | 120 comments Happy reading, everybody!!

I've started the read-a-thon with East of Eden, which is probably gonna keep me busy until tomorrow, since it's over 700 pages. I'm on page 256 and loving it so far - beautifully written!

Could be pencilled down for the "published more than 10 years ago" task?

For the games, I've participated in Kick Off, Getting to Know You and Bookish A-Z. :)

Rachelnyc | 943 comments I finished You which fits the following of the overlapping tasks:

Finish a book for the ATY challenge
Book started before the marathon
Book by female author

For other tasks, it could be used for:
One word title
Mystery/Thriller
Book in a series
Book set in the country I reside in

Is anyone good with creating spreadsheets? It's not my strong suit but if someone could put one together, that would probably help keep us organized since there is a lot to track!

Next up for me is A Man Called Ove
