Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments Morning team! Sounds like we’ve had a great start to the readathon.

As Rachelnyc suggested, if anyone is good with spreadsheets and wants to create one to track our progress that would be great. Otherwise I’m happy to keep track in post 2 of this thread but that might not be the easiest way for everyone to see where we’re up to. I’ll check in later today and update with everyone’s progress from day one, unless anyone has volunteered to make a spreadsheet before them.

Rachel, Laura is posting a list of all the games in the team challenge thread so you can always check there for the latest list.

Happy reading today everyone. :-)

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments Hi again team. We have earned our first guesses:

One team guess for finishing three books started before the readathon
Three guesses for Kathy Jo (for reading a poem, reading for 2 hours straight and finishing a book or story in one sitting)

Books started before the readathon can’t be used for the genre, title, cover tasks, but they do count for pages read and hours listened to.

We don’t have to use the guesses all at once, but when you are ready to use a guess please name the square you’re guessing and i will tell you if it’s a hit or miss.

I’m going to work on updating the games tracker now. One request to make the record keeping easier, if you’re contributing to the total pages read or hours of audiobook, please could you post your total for the readathon so far (so not just pages read that day). Thank you! :-)

message 53: by Marina (new)

Marina | 1312 comments I've been reading for 2 hours straight yesterday. Does that earn me a guess? I've also read for at least 2 hours today but I guess it can only count once for each member

message 54: by Hilde (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments Hi Blue Team :)

I have listened to 3,5 hours of audio so far (yesterday and today).

message 55: by Rachelnyc (new)

Rachelnyc | 943 comments Bryony wrote: "Books started before the readathon can’t be used for the genre, title, cover tasks, but they do count for pages read and hours listened to.."

Hi Bryony. Was this rule mentioned anywhere? Not that I'm spying but I believe the other teams are using books started prior to the read-a-thon as long as they weren't more than 75" completed already.

message 56: by Rachelnyc (new)

Rachelnyc | 943 comments My stats as of now:

Read 175 pages
Read for 2 hours straight
Recommended a book
Read a poem (Raven by Poe)
Participated in all games so far

message 57: by Bryony (new)

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments Rachelnyc, it was mentioned in the team challenge intro thread:

Those books can be used to count towards the page count (4,000 pages) or potentially the 2-hours straight.

But you have to start a book during the read-a-thon in order to count it towards any other prompt.

I’ll check in with the other mods to make sure each team is following the same rules.

message 58: by Bryony (new)

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments Thanks for your update everyone, we have these new guesses:

Marina - one guess for reading two hours straight (you’re right that each person can only earn this guess once)

Rachelnyc- two guesses for reading two hours straight and reading a poem

message 59: by Bryony (new)

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments Sorry for any confusion. Laura has just posted this helpful summary about what books started before the readathon can count for. Hopefully this is all okay, but just let me know if anyone has questions. :-)

Started before the read-a-thon, at least 25% remaining or less than 75% complete:
- Read for 2 Straight Hours (1 Per Member; Limit of 10 Hours)
- Finish 3 Books Started Before the Read-a-Thon (1 per Member;
- Read 4,000 pages (600 per Member)
- Listen to 20 Hours of Audiobooks (5 Hours per Member)

Started during the read-a-thon:
- All tasks, depending on format (short story, graphic novel, audiobook, etc.)

If you max out your personal audio limit (5 hours) then you can begin counting your hours as "pages" for the page task.

Also, each team can earn a maximum of five guesses from reading poems. This is just to make sure people who read lots of poetry don’t finish the board in super quick time and leave no guesses for people working on longer tasks.

message 60: by Marina (new)

Marina | 1312 comments I'm going to us my first guess and try F2.

My update for the last two days:
- I've read just about 630 pages
- I've participated in these games: Kick-Off, Getting to Know, Bookish A-Z, Recommendations

I'm reading Ukuelig now and will probably finish it tomorrow. I've seen the movie so it feels like an easy read though it's 640 pages long.
I've also started Huset ved Riverton but I'm only 50 pages in. I don't know why I've chosen such long books for the read-a-thon.
I have Foul Play ready as an audiobook for the next days at work. It's just under 5 hours long so I should be able to finish that one as well.

message 61: by Rachelnyc (new)

Rachelnyc | 943 comments Thanks so much for the clarification Bryony!

I guess I'll go ahead and get things started by using one of my guesses with E5,

message 62: by Bryony (new)

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments Wow that’s a great start to the readathon Marina, over 600 pages already!

F2 and E5 are both misses, sorry. :-(

I haven't been doing much else today 😁

message 64: by Kathy Jo (new)

Kathy Jo (kjsotr) | 304 comments I will use one guess for B5

message 65: by Jody (last edited Mar 25, 2018 12:51PM) (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Hello team!

I've just finished A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier. It could count for:

Title Tasks
- Read a Book with an Article in the Title (a, an, the)
- Read a Book with a Long Title (6+words)

Genre Tasks
- Read a Non-Fiction Book

Author Tasks
- 2 Books by a POC ⚡

Setting/Character Tasks
- Read a Book with a Child Main Character

Publishing Tasks
- Read a Book Published More than 10 Years Ago

Cover Tasks
- Read the Rainbow (1 Book for Each Color - Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple/Violet) ⚡

Award/Rating Tasks
- Finish a Book with an Average GR Rating of Between 4 and 4.3

I'll let the group decide where to stick it!

I also read a poem to my Spider tonight, an Emily Dickinson one, from my poem a day book ... it was from my birthday back in January, I'm a bit behind ...

Do I get two guesses? One for the book and one for the poem?

message 66: by Hilde (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments Hello! Here is my evening update;

- Read one novella from Alice Munros beste (Walker Brothers Cowboy)
- Started Persepolis
- Read two poems from this free book that I had on kindle Einstein's Cat (But I am not sure if we have used all of our 5 for the poems?). This is free on kindle if anyone is interested

- Audio hours total so far: 4,5 hours
- Page count: 53

message 67: by Hilde (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments For the book recommendation, here are three of my favourites:
Stoner, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and The Wall.

For all these 3, there wasn't really much going on, but there was something about the mood that just got to me. Beautiful books.

I will add this to the "game" thread as well, so it can be checked of for that.

Have a nice reading Sunday everyone:) I am off to bed soon, after a lovely spring day here (on of the first where you could feel the warmth from the sun).

message 68: by Bryony (new)

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments B5 is a miss too Kathy Jo, sorry!

Jody, that’s two guesses for you (for the book and the poem).

Hilde, that’s one guess for you (for the poem).

message 69: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Stoner is a-MAZ-ing. I totally agree, it feels like nothing happens (same with A Tree Grows in Brooklyn), but it does. I was left with such a melancholy ache after I finished it. I'm going to put that third one on my list - thanks Hilde!! Actually, Hilde, have you read Giovanni's Room? I think you might like it.

message 70: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I'll guess C8 and J3.

Thanks Bryony!

Now ... off to pick a book for Week 13. A 'secret' book. Hmm.

message 71: by Hilde (last edited Mar 25, 2018 01:51PM) (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments Yes, that is the word, I was definetly filled with a melancholy ache after finishing these! If you liked those two, I am pretty sure you will enjoy The Wall as well.

And thanks for the tip for Giovanni's Room. I actually got that recommended from several people, but have yet to read it, so I will add it to my list! :) Edit: It was already on my wishlist, so now I just need to get to it.

Bryony, thanks! I will wait to use my guess until I've seen if Jody got a hit or miss on her guesses.

message 72: by Bryony (new)

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments Jody, C8 is a hit. Yay! Our first one. But J3 is a miss.

Also, which poem a day book are you reading, and would you recommend it? My family have A Poem for Every Night of the Year and I’d been thinking of buying A Poem for Every Day of the Year for our collection too.

message 73: by Hilde (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments Great! I'm gonna go with D8 then for my guess.

message 74: by Jill (new)

Jill | 725 comments I finshed The Fact of a Body: A Murder and a Memoir. It can fit:
A book with a long title
A nonfiction book
A book set in the country you live in

I have read a total of 324 pages so far. I have also participated in the fourth game (recommend a book).
Next up for me is Bossypants.

Look like the Blue Team is making great progress!

message 75: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments A Poem for Every Day of the Year is the one I'm reading! It was a gift from my ex-husband and the Spider for Christmas. I am not the biggest poetry fan (as you can tell, I have been stuck on the 19th of January), but I'm going to catch up and start reading them with her - she really loved the poem tonight.

message 76: by Bryony (new)

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments D8 is a miss Hilde, sorry!

Jill, that’s one guess earned for the book you’ve completed.

That’s lovely that you’re both enjoying the poems Jody. I’m not much of a poetry reader either but I do really like the idea of a poem for each day (or night) of the year so I’ve been trying to make time for it.

message 77: by Rachelnyc (new)

Rachelnyc | 943 comments I'll use my second guess for C7.

Has everyone offered a recommendation yet? That is an easy way to get a team guess once everyone has done so.

I recommended The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah. There is domestic violence, which is of course disturbing, but the relationships all feel so real and the Alaska setting is incredible.

message 78: by Jill (new)

Jill | 725 comments I am going to guess J11

message 79: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3282 comments Here's my progress for today:

- Finished Dumplin', which I read for 2 hours straight
- Read Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse to count toward the individual Bingo
- To date, I've read a total of 412 pages

I'm sure Dumplin' can count for multiple tasks, so I'll leave it up to the group to decide where it best fits. Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse was finished in one sitting, and has a colour in the title.

I've also made a few recommendations in the Recommend a Good One thread yesterday.

message 80: by Erica (last edited Mar 25, 2018 10:02PM) (new)

Erica | 555 comments I finished Strange Weather for the ATY challenge but I had already started it before the readathon started.

Page total: 358

I've also read some picture books The Animal BoogieWalking Through the Jungle that could count for
- picture book
read in one sitting

And I've
- read for 2 hours straight.
- recommended a book
- participated in all games so far

Started An American Marriage last night

message 81: by Marina (new)

Marina | 1312 comments Goodmorning team!
You've been busy while I've been sleeping :-D

I haven't made a recommandation yet... I think I'll recommend A Little Life. That book tore me to pieces but I loved it. It's depressing but still amazing!

message 82: by Marina (new)

Marina | 1312 comments Rachelnyc wrote: "I recommended The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah. There is domestic violence, which is of course disturbing, but the relationships all feel so real and the Alaska setting is incredible."

I love Kristin Hannah's books. I think I already have this one on my TBR but maybe I should try and find time for it soon!

message 83: by Tracy (last edited Mar 26, 2018 04:36AM) (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments OMG .... this weekend was a mess guys :-(

I will figure out my sad page count so far when I get home....its not much maybe only 100-150 pages so far....

I need to get us some guesses so I will work on something at work today, probably The Hate U Give, because it will be quick, and then tonight I plan on reading a middle grade and a picture book and can get in maybe a poem if we haven't used them up by then.....

or a short story, same

the two books I was going to read were books I started for the ATY challenge BEFORE the read a thon started, so I'm not sure its the best strategy to keep spending time on those right now......what do you all think? I can always put them off until after.

I'm feeling bad I haven't gotten anything done :-(

message 84: by Tracy (last edited Mar 26, 2018 04:38AM) (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Bryony, message #32.....I did the games can you check them off, you can add one for Give a book recommendation game also (message #2 in the game thread) , thats done :-)

message 85: by Bryony (new)

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments Rachelnyc, C7 is a hit.

Jill, J11 is a miss, sorry!

message 86: by Bryony (new)

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments Rachel, you have two guesses, one for Dumplin' and one for finishing a book in one sitting.

message 87: by Bryony (new)

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments Erica, that’s three guesses for you (read a book in one sitting, read for two hours straight, read a picture book).

message 88: by Bryony (new)

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments Sorry Tracy, I’ve updated the post with the games you’ve completed now.

Don’t feel bad at all, the readathon is meant to be fun, not to make anyone feel guilty if they haven’t read as much as they were hoping to. I just finished The Hate U Give and really liked it. I hope you’re enjoying it too.

message 89: by Kathy Jo (new)

Kathy Jo (kjsotr) | 304 comments I'm going to guess C6.

Didn't make much progress yesterday, but I will update later.

message 90: by Hilde (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments Tracy wrote: "OMG .... this weekend was a mess guys :-(

Tracy, I have 30 minutes left for an audio that I started before the read-a-thon, so if you want to finish yours we can combine these for the '3 books started before the read-a-thon' 😊

The Hate U Give was great btw, enjoy!

message 91: by Hilde (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments Bryony, I read two poems yesterday, so if one person is allowed to have more than one, we can check one more off :)

message 92: by Erica (new)

Erica | 555 comments I’ll take one guess for now- C9

Also, I know I can’t count Strange Weather since I started it before the readathon, but it’s made up of novellas, 3 of which I read after Saturday so can I put one toward the novella/short story task?

I also read a poem today, the first poem from Life on Mars

message 93: by Rachelnyc (new)

Rachelnyc | 943 comments I finished A Man Called Ove and it fits the Book with an Article in the Title category.

Updated page count: 443

I am going to start Bonfire later today and I also picked up I Am America at my used bookstore and I will start that since it should be fairly quick.

Marina, I hope you like The Great Alone!

message 94: by Marina (last edited Mar 26, 2018 06:56AM) (new)

Marina | 1312 comments I finished Foul Play by Steffie Hall today. I listened to the audiobook so you can put me down for 5 hours.
Do I earn a guess for finishing a book started during the read-a-thon?
It could count as a romance, average below 3,5 or a book published more than 10 years ago. And it's written by a woman and maybe we can use it for the orange cover?

Bryony, you'll let me know if I need to make a guess, right? :-)

message 95: by Rachelnyc (new)

Rachelnyc | 943 comments Oh, forgot to mention, A Man Called Ove was for the ATY challenge as well.

message 96: by Hilde (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments Just finished Liv andre har levd, and with that maxed out my 5 hours of audio. It will also work for a book that was started before the read-a-thon.

message 97: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Read a picture book can’t link it I’m on the app: After the Fall : How Humpty Dumpty Got Himself Back Together Again

Read a short story/ novella: We Should all be Feminists.

Will update page count when I get home

Starting The Hate U Give .... Can’t wait to read it 😊

message 98: by Kathy Jo (new)

Kathy Jo (kjsotr) | 304 comments Finished The Heavenly Man
-Blue cover
- 5 hours audio
- for ATY challenge
- could be used for article in title
- if POC means "non white person", counts as Chinese man.

message 99: by Marina (new)

Marina | 1312 comments Tracy wrote: "Starting The Hate U Give .... Can’t wait to read it"

Enjoy 😊 I listened to the audiobook and couldn't put it down so finished it in a day.

message 100: by Marina (new)

Marina | 1312 comments This evening I finished Ukuelig, so I've finished 2 books started during the read-a-thon.
It can also count towards:
- A book for the ATY challenge (narrative non-fiction)
- Historical
- Female author

I'm guessing I have earned a few guesses today, but I'm still not sure how many, so just let me know 😊
