Bound by Magic
EzraI open the door for a trembling Lani. Pulling her inside by the hand I shut the door and hug her tightly. She’s whiter than a sheet! “What’s the matter? What happened?” I question protectively, holding her securely in a hug.
LaniHe opens the door and pulls me inside, shutting the door behind us. He hugs me to him tightly and I clutch his shirt as he asks me what was the matter. I tremble in her arms, clinging to him a little.
"I went back to the station and everyone was standing around my office. There was pictures of the bodies from our case all over the walls. At the heart of it... there was pictures of my parents the night they were murdered." I say my voice shaking.
"They wrote I'm next." I tell him.
Ezra“Oh, no you aren’t,” I tell her. “They won’t get within ten feet of you.” I squeeze her waist and cup the back of her head, stroking her hair until she settles down enough for me to give her some water.
Just then Eriks comes over with a giant plate of gooey pepperoni pizza. “Here, Clare. There’s plenty left still. Rookie here was too worried to eat,” he says. I glare at him.
LaniHe tells me no I'm not and that they won't get within ten feet of me. He squeezes me softly and cups the back of my head, stroking my hair. I take a few breathes calming down a little and he gives me a little water to drink.
Eriks comes over with a gain plate of pepperoni pizza and offers it to me. He tells me there is plenty left still since Ezra was too worried to eat.
"Thank you." I say softly with a nod taking the plate. I shift out of Ezra's arms to go sit down and then dig into some of the pizza. I sip some more water as I calm down a bit more.
EzraI let her go and grab myself a couple slices as well and fill up a cup of coke. I pour Eriks some too and settle down with him and Lani in the living room, all of us feeling a little on edge but trying to relax. Taking up the remote Eriks settles on The Simpsons. “Have you guys ever seen the funniest cartoon family in TV history?” He smirks.
LaniHe goes and grabs a few slices for himself. He grabs a glass of coke and pours Eriks some too. He settles down with us in the living room. I lean against him a little as I eat my pizza.
I roll my eyes as I look at Eriks. "I don't have a lot of time to watch tv. Cases to solve and all that." I tell him.
Ezra“Well, you’ve got time now. Relax a bit and stay a while. It’ll be like one of those sleepovers the popular kids in school bragged about,” Eriks snorts sarcastically. I throw a pillow at him and hold Lani close.

I roll my eyes and chuckle a little as Ezra throws a pillow at him. He holds me a little closer and I relax against him, soothed by his touch.
"I'm sorry about earlier with your brother. I never would have let you be killed by him but I didn't want him to think he could hold that over me or you." I whisper softly.
Ezra“Don’t apologize,” I whisper to her, my arm tightening around her. I hide my face in her neck with my cheek pressed to her shoulder. “I knew he wouldn’t have done anything. But I didn’t want to risk it—especially when it comes to you.”
LaniHe whispers don't apologize and tightens his arm around me. He buries his face against my neck, his cheek pressed against my shoulder. He whispers he knew his brother won't have done anything but he didn't want to risk it, not when it comes to me.
"Thank you." I whisper softly resting my head against his and my hand over his.
EzraShe rests her hand over mine. My fingers twine loosely with hers as I hold her, my eyes growing heavy. I don’t realize I’m falling asleep until my eyes close once, twice. By the third time I give up trying to keep my eyes open and let go.
LaniHis fingers intertwine with mine and his eyes start to droop as he falls asleep. I chuckle softly and kiss his head softly. I glance over and see Eriks watching us.
"Not a word." I whisper to him and he holds his hands up in surrender. I use my magic to get Ezra to his bed and tucked in. I tell Eriks I'm crashing too and he calls out night.
I get changed out of my work clothes into some of Ezra's he had laid out for me. Finally I yawn and curl up against him under the blankets. Feeling safe for now.
EzraI wake up to a soft thumping. My eyes flick open and it takes a minute to register my room. My room? Didn’t I fall asleep on the couch? The thumping continues into my left ear and I lift my head. I blush. I had been resting against Lani’s chest. Sitting up I rub my eyes. A loud vrrrrr makes me jump but I snatch my phone up off my nightstand and answer. Before I can get a word out the chief’s voice comes on to tell me and Lani not to come in. They’re still processing everything from Lani’s office.
LaniI mumble in my sleep hearing some noise and roll over snuggling back under the blankets. I hear Ezra talking to someone and I yawn rolling back over as he hangs up. "Everything okay?" I ask sleepily.
EzraI nod as I lay back down. “Chief said to stay in. They’re still working on processing your office,” I yawn as I stretch out beneath the blankets, turning my face into the pillow. “By the way, how did I end up in bed?”
LaniHe nods and lays back down. He tells me the chief said to stay in since they are still working on my office. I wince remembering my nasty surprise yesterday night.
He yawns and stretches out as he asks me how he ended up in bed. "Well you fell asleep on the couch still holding me. So I used a little magic to help move you here and tuck you in. I figured you would be more comfortable here then out there with Eriks."
Ezra“Oh. Thanks.” I smile at her. But seeing a flash of worry in her eyes I place a hand on her arm and squeeze it gently. “Don’t worry,” I promise. “No one will get you here.”
LaniHe thanks me and rests a hand on my arm and squeezes it gently telling me not to worry and that no one was going to get me here. "I know. Thank you." I say softly.
EzraI flash a soft smile before I slide out of bed, a little relieved to know she didn’t go as far as to change me. “I’m gonna take a shower. I’ll make sure to leave you some hot water,” I tell her as I sling a towel over my shoulder.
LaniHe flashes a soft smile and slides out of bed. He tells me he is going to shower and make sure to leave me some hot water. He slings a towel over his shoulder.
"Sounds good to me. I think I'm going to go snack on pizza and make some coffee." I tell him. I rest a hand on his shoulder as I walk pass him and lean up on my toes to kiss his cheek.
"Thanks again for letting me say here and for helping me. I really owe you."
Ezra“You don’t owe me anything,” I tell her, touching my cheek where she had kissed me. I blush before shutting myself in the bathroom for a nice hot shower.
Eriks
I smirk when Clare comes out with a big smile on her face. For once since the shit hit the fan she looks well rested. “You’re looking better today. Have a fun night?” I tease.
LaniHe tells me I don't owe him anything but I do. He had taken me in when I was at my lowest. He was looking out for me and was trying to accept this bond between our magic. It was for more then I could ever ask of him to do.
I head out into the living room and see Eriks is alive. She teases me about looking better today and if I had a fun night. "Oh shut it. We didn't do anything." I tell him punching his shoulder a little.
I head over to the kitchen and warm up some pizza after I get the coffee going.
Eriks“That’s impressive,” I chuckle. “How long has it been since he came? A few months? Good grief you two stare at each other enough, why don’t you just take a lesson from The Little Mermaid and kiss already?”
I smirk. “Don’t give me that look! My daughter is obsessed with Ursula,” I tell her as she brews some coffee, a piece of pizza held between her teeth.
LaniI roll my eyes as he chuckles that is impressive and that it has been a months since Ezra got here and we stare at each other enough. He adds to take a lesson from the Little Mermaid and just kiss already.
I give him a really look and he smirks telling me not to give him that look and his daughter is obsessed with Ursula. I take a bite of the pizza and swallow.
"First off terrible role model and second it is way more complicated then us just kissing." I tell him. "I'm sure you have hear of the match. When two magic user's magic matches to one and other. They form a bond through the magic." I sigh.
"I don't want to force anything."
EriksI get to my feet when Clare says that. “Lani, you’re not forcing anything. The bond was already set when the two of you were born. It’s only a matter of time before it’s solidified,” I explain to her with my arms crossed over my chest. “And just so you know, my daughter loves the power Ursula has; she’s a more empowering role model for a girl of three than some prissy little princess pining for lost love. Don’t you think?”
LaniHe gets to his feet and tells me that I'm not forcing anything and the bond was already set when we were born. It was only a matter of time that it solidified. He crosses his arms as he adds Ursula is a better role model then a prissy princess.
"Well I can't argue with that. I never was a fan of princess." I tell him with a little chuckle and sigh. "He grew up in a house that abused him for having magic. He still is afraid to tap into his magic. It doesn't feel right to drag him into my world."
"Besides I have a killer after me. I don't want to risk Ezra getting tangled up in that anymore then he has." I say grabbing a mug of coffee.
Eriks“For one, he was dragged into this when his magic showed up and the chief tried arresting him. There’s no way out of the thicket now until we get to the bottom of it,” I correct her. “Secondly, he’s already a part of the magical world. But if you’re worried about it, how about you try different tactics? He said his father’s mortal right? Why don’t you try contacting his mother? No doubt she’s magic, maybe she can help him come out of his shell a bit.”
LaniHe tells me Ezra was already dragged into this when his magic showed up and the chief tried to arrest him. So there was no way out of this until we get to the bottom of this case. Second that maybe I could try a different tactic and see if I can contact his mother.
I bite my lip a little. "I don't know... what if they aren't on good terms. I don't want to dig up old wounds for him." I say with a sigh.
Eriks“Would you like to bet that he’s never known her? If his father is against magic them he must’ve made her go sometime... chances are that he forced her to keep her distance,” I guess. Makes me wonder if his father got custody of him and didn’t bother to change it when Ezra started using magic.
Lani"Maybe, I'll think about it. I don't want to meddle too much in his personal life." I tell Eriks. I don't want to do anything to meddle after Ezra had already done so much to help me with everything right now.
"Anyway not a word to Ezra or I swear I'll kick you butt in training." I tell him as I hear the bedroom door starting to open.
Ezra“Who’s kicking Whose butt?” I ask as I leave my bedroom, pulling a form fitting t shirt on over my head. Then I step into the kitchen and pop a couple slices of pizza in the toaster oven. When I look at the pair Eriks looks away at the tv and Lani doesn’t say anything either.
Lani"No one." I tell him as he comes out of his bedroom. He comes into the kitchen and pops some pizza in the oven. He looks at us and Eriks looks away towards the tv. I am quiet for a minute or two before I ask him something.
"So what do you want to do today? I mean we are kind of stuck with nothing to do since I can't go into work and all the stuff for the case was in my office. Plus we don't have any leads again."
Ezra“Maybe we should just take the day to recoup. This thing has been crazy for all of us—I know we relaxed a bit yesterday but maybe just one day taking a step back will help us find something,” I suggest, getting the feeling that things will get much more involved before it’s over.
LaniHe tells me that maybe we should have a day to recoup and things have been crazy for us so maybe stepping back will help us find something.
I shrug a little, sipping my coffee. "Sounds good to me." I tell him. I honestly wasn't in the mood to run into any more awful surprises.
EzraWhen my pizza is heated up I take it out and grab a plate. Then I pour myself some coffee with cream and sugar. “Well if we’re just cooling down today I’m going to head home and grab a change of clothes,” Eriks says with a sigh going to the door. “I’ll be back in a half hour. Hopefully you two will survive that long without me.”
LaniEriks says since we are going to be cooling down today then he is going to go home and get some clothes.
"Yea, yea. We'll be fine. Now go on." I tell him shooing him out as he heads to the door. I sip my coffee and think that maybe later it would be a good idea to get some new clothes to wear since my apartment was still a crime scene.
Ezra“If you want I could take you out so you can get some clothes. Not that I don’t enjoy seeing you wear mine, but I’m sure you’d like wearing something that fits,” I suggest with a smile in between bites of pizza and sips of coffee.
LaniHe offers to take me out to get some clothes. Not that he doesn't enjoy seeing me in his clothes. I blush a little and nod. "Yea that would be great. I have no clue how long they are going to keep my apartment on lock down but I really need to get some things." I say with a little smile.
Ezra“All right, then. Let’s go.” I smile eagerly and snatch up my keys from the counter as well as my wallet. “I’ll just let Eriks know, before he throws a tantrum.” I smirk at her before I speed dial the detective and update him quickly before he can object as we leave the apartment.
LaniHe smiles eagerly and says let's go as he snatches up this keys. He tells me he'll let Eriks know before he throws a fit. He calls him up and lets him know.
I chuckle as he head out of there as he finishes updating Eriks. "Just a quick shopping run. I'm looking to just grab some basic stuff until I can get back to my apartment." I tell him as we ride the elevator down.
EzraI shake my head after getting off the phone with Eriks. “He’s giving us an hour and a half before we need to come back,” I report with a smile, hitting the button for the first floor. “He Just doesn’t want to get into it with the Chief for not watching me.”
LaniHe shakes his head and tells me Eriks is giving us an hour and a half before we have to be back. He tells me with a smile as he hits the button for the first floor.
"He knows I'll won't run away with you or anything crazy. Besides I think she would understand me wanting to get out to go shopping without Eriks around. Don't need him watching me pick out panties and bras." I say with a laugh.
EzraI chuckle as the elevator brings us to the first floor and let’s out. “I take it you’re driving this time?” I grin. I don’t mind this time—this time we aren’t in a rush. “So where are we going?” I ask as I follow her to her car and pop in the passenger seat.
LaniHe chuckles and we get out as he grins and says that he takes it I'm driving. "Yea." I say with a little laugh and head to my car. He asks me where we are going.
"I figure the mall would be a good one stop shop for everything I need to get." I tell him as I hop in my car and buckle up before I pull out of the parking garage.
Ezra“Sounds like a Plan. However, please don’t tell me you’re one of those people who can spend an entire day just looking for a shirt and pants. I’m pretty go-with-the-flow but even I have my limits.”
LaniI chuckle looking at him. "Nah, I'm more of a quick shopper." I tell him as I drive to the mall. "Probably take me an half hour tops to get everything I need. So we can stop and run any other errands you want to do."
Ezra“Good idea,” I agree and pull up my phone, making a quick shopping list for myself. I don’t necessarily need to run around the mall but hey, I might as well take advantage of the opportunity. While I finish up my list we pull into the mall lot, on the side with a Sears. I whistle low. “As Good As their parking is, it’s just sad to see an empty lot.”
LaniHe tells me that is a good idea and I pull into the parking lot. He whistles seeing the nearly open parking lot at Sears. "Well this one is going out of business." I tell him as I get out of my car with him.
"So where do you want to start? With my stuff or yours?" I ask since I saw him putting together a shopping list while I was driving.
Ezra“Let’s start with your stuff,” i Tell her as i slide out of the car and slip my phone back into my pocket. “That way if Eriks gets fussy well at least have everything you need.” I smirk.
I make it back to our apartment building and head up to his apartment. I knock on the door once I get there and wait for him to let me in. My hands trembling slightly in fear. The killer made his or her move. They would be coming for me now.
