Bound by Magic

We don’t even get to the end of the block when I ask the driver to stop. In the rear view, Lani just stands at the bus stop. I sigh. It’ll be another hour at least for the next one. And we’re both going to the same building. Throwing open the car door I lean out and wave her over. “Come on, Cinderella! Let’s get Home before midnight!” I tease tiredly.

I notice his car and the door open. He calls out to me, waving telling me to come on, let's get home before midnight. I roll my eyes and laugh as I walk over.
I plop down in the car and buckle up. "I'm paying for half, no arguing." I tell him flat out as we head back towards our apartment building. "Thanks for stopping." I add softly.

“Fine. Im too tired to argue anyway,” I grumble as I lean against the window. The cab driver resumes his short route to our building. It doesn’t take us long with minimal traffic and getting the green light. Once we stop in front of the building I stumble out of the cab and pay my half of the fare. I hold the door open for Lani and rub my pounding head.

He grumbles it is fine and he is too tired to argue anyway. He leans against the window as we ride to the apartment building. We get there and he stumbles out before paying for half. I pay the other half and walk in with him.
"Want some advil or something?" I ask we ride the elevator up to our floor.

“No, don’t worry about me. I’ve got something stronger at my place.” I hope into the elevator and wait for her until I hit the button for our floor. Once she’s in the doors shut and the were lifted up a few floors

He tells me he is fine and has something stronger at his place. "Alright." I say with a nod and lean against the rail as the elevator moves up. I wait until it dings and opens to let us out.
"Guess I'll see you tomorrow." I say stopping in front of my apartment.

“Before you go, you want to come in for a drink?” I invite as I unlock my door and shoulder it open. I perk outside to see if she’s coming or not.

He invites me in for a drink and I debate on it for a moment before he peeks out to look if I was coming or not. "Sure." I say and walk over. I lose the door behind me and drop my glamour since I was down if the alter ego for now.
"Whatcha got to drink, rookie?" I ask him with a small smile.

“Enough to make a pirate cry,” I chuckle and open up the small bar in my kitchenette, pulling out some white wine for myself. “I don’t know what you like so just pick something out while I grab some glasses.”

He chuckles saying enough to make a pirate cry. I chuckle a little myself and he opens up a small bar where he grabs some white wine from. He tells me to grab whatever for myself.
"Thanks." I say as I walk over and look through what he has. I end up picking some whiskey. I wasn't a big drink but when I did I could handle my liquor well.

I toss back my glass of wine in two gulps, but quickly switch to the whisky with Lani. I fill my glass and take a seat at the small table. My headache finally begins to subside and my magic calms. Hallelujah.

He tosses back his glass of wine and then starts to drink the whiskey with me. I throw back my glass and sigh a little. He seems to relax a little. Guess the alcohol helps.

“Do How’d you get into this line of work?” I ask, meeting her gaze. “Earlier I answered your question for me, care to exchange?”

He asks me about how I got into this line of work since I asked him earlier day. I chuckle rolling my eyes and throw back another glass of whiskey. "I don't know if I should. You seem pretty stand offish when I asked you. Plus you never told me why." I say looking at him.
I sigh and pour myself another drink. "But I'll play nice this time." I say and pause. "My parents were killed by a major magic user... I was maybe four or five at the time. I'm also the only living witness to it but they never found who did it. So I got into this line of work to catch my parent's killer one day but also to try and stop others from having to feel the pain that I did."
I chuckle and swallow a gulp of whiskey. "Probably more of a depressing answer then you were expecting."

I crack a weak smile and shake my head. “Is there any other kind of answer? My career has been relatively short so far but I haven’t heard of one reason that isn’t joyful,” I tell her as I pour another glass for us.

He cracks a weak smile and shakes his head saying is there any other kind of answer. "Sure one of those noble souls who get into it to make the world a better place and protect people." I say with a little chuckle. I gladly accept the refill of my glass even if I was already working on putting down my fourth glass.

“If I ever hear someone say that I will smack them and call bullshit. Plenty of people just stand on the sidelines as crime happens doing nothing—I doubt someone out there suddenly developed a conscience,” I sigh like the pessimist I am.

I chuckle as he says he will smack anyone who says that and call bullshit on it. "Well aren't you just a ray of sunshine." I tease as I throw back my drink and set the glass down on the table. "Can't say I disagree though."

Acknowledging the agreement with a nod I set my empty glass down and sit back in my chair. A glance at the clock says it’s just after midnight. I smile lazily. “An interesting end to an interesting day,” I murmur.

He nods and sets down his glass as well. He sits back in his chair and glances at the clock. It read just past midnight. He smiles lazily looking more mellow then he had all day. He murmurs interesting end to an interesting day.
I chuckle. "This is most Tuesday nights for me but if you say so." I tease in a playful tone. I sigh and get up. "Well I should get going. I'm sure you want to get to sleep and we both have work to do tomorrow."

I nod. “Yeah. I better get to bed, myself. I’ll walk you out,” i say, taking our glasses and setting them in the sink. Then I lead her to the door and lead against the frame. “I guess I’ll see see you tomorrow. Yeah?”

He nods and says he better get to bed, that he would walk me out. He grabs our glasses and sets them in the sink. He leads me to the door and leans against the door frame. He tells me he'll guess he'll see me tomorrow.
"Yeah, see you tomorrow." I say with a nod before I head out of his apartment to walk down the hallway to mine.

“Goodnight,” I call after her before the door closes. With a relaxed sigh I set the whiskey back in the cabinet and strip down to my boxers. Then I trudge into my room and crawl in under my sheets, falling into the deepest sleep of my life.

He calls out goodnight and I chuckle a little. He wasn't that bad when he wasn't hating me and magic. Doubt it will still like that for long. I head back to my apartment and shower before I get dressed in my pajamas. I slip into my bed and curl up as I fall asleep.
I wake up the next morning with a start. Nightmares of my parents' deaths plaguing my mind. I take a deep breath and rub my eyes as I get up out of bed.

Oddly enough I wake up the next morning feeling better than I ever had before. If I’m not lying to myself, I could only figure it was cause of the pent up magic I used last night on that drunk. I run a hand through my disheveled hair before sliding out of bed for a quick shower.
(Did you have any specific ideas going from here? I’m just wondering)

Lani
I get dressed and make myself some breakfast. I'd eat up and then head down to get some coffee for myself. Maybe I'll be nice and grab the rookie some. Then again he might just get prissy and think I'm stalking him again.
I sigh. Why was he such a pain. I mean he had to feel our connection too. I couldn't just be going crazy and being the only one who felt it.

Ezra
After a nice hot shower and a quick breakfast of toast with jelly I head downstairs to the parking garage to grab my bike. Slipping my helmet on I start off for the station. I consider stopping by the coffee shop but decide against it. How about that? I’m in too good of a mood to need coffee. Wow.

Lani
I finish up breakfast and make my way down to the coffee shop. I suffer through the line and get myself a coffee. I decide to play nice and get one for the rookie as a peace offering.
I take my car to the station. I would have taken it yesterday when the rookie offered me a ride but it was in the shop to be fixed. My brakes had been acting up. Luckily they seem to be back to working condition as I park at the station.

Ezra
I walk into the station, flashing my badge as I enter and making a beeline for my cubicle. But I stop dead in my tracks seeing my desk, dropping my bag st my feet. A small card sits on my keyboard. Five simple words scrawled across it: i know you did it. I swallow, staring at it in confusion. What did I do?

I head inside and make my way to my office to drop off my stuff before I walk over to Ezra's cubicle. "Morning rookie. Figured you might want some coffee..." I trail off noticing him standing there with his bags on the floor.
"Everything okay?" I ask seeing he was staring at a card on his keyboard. I couldn't make out what it said but it looks like whatever it was freaked him out.

“Have you seen this?” I ask her in a hushed voice, picking up the note. My eyes flicker around the office space suspiciously as i Hand her the piece of paper. “Any idea what it is?”

I set down his coffee on the desk and look at the note he picks up. His eyes flick around as he hands me the piece of paper and asks me any idea what this is.
"Maybe a prank. Some of the other rookies messing with you?" I say not sure who would send him something like this.

“Doubt it. I’m the only one in this department. And I’ve never even met people in other departments, you and I have been busy with this case,” I whisper, my senses on high alert now. I shudder feeling my magic at my fingertips.

"Okay let's just stay calm about this." I say feeling his magic start to flare. "Look we can have it sent to forensics and check the video feed if that would put you at ease but I don't it is anything."
I rest a hand on his arm. "I mean unless you actually did something and aren't telling me about it. Not that I would judge you like that."

“I don’t know if I’ve done anything, that’s just it,” i reply. She could check the tapes, but a voice in the back of my mind doubts anything would come of it. Turning to face her, I accept her offer of coffee with a nod and take a sip. Shaking my head clear I clear my throat and change the subject. “Other than yourself, is there anyone you know powerful enough to track the magic? I know it’s risky but I feel like that will be our best bet to catching this guy.”

He says he doesn't know if he has done anything and then turns to face me. He takes the coffee I offered him and nods taking a sip. He clears his throat and asks if there is anyone besides me that can track magic.
"Not really. There isn't many major magic uses like me that work the force." I tell him. "Sure it is risky but I can handle it if you think it is our best bet to snag this guy. I mean I want him behind bars as well."

“Okay. Do you think we should revisit the crime scene? If we have any chance of following the print we might as well start there. Will we need anything for it? I’ve never done this either.”

"Yea, going back to the crime scene might be best for picking up the residual magic." I tell him with a nod. "It isn't hard for a major magic user to track magic, it's just draining to do. So snacks might be nice to have to regain some energy."

“I have teriyaki jerky if you’re interested,” I offer on our way out of the office. I follow her to her cruiser and toss my bag on the floor as I slide in the passenger seat. “There’s plenty of protein.”

"Eh not my favorite but beggars can't be choses." I say with a shrug and then head to my cruiser. I climb in and start her up once we are both buckled up. I chuckle at his comment and head to the crime scene.

The nearer we draw to the crime scene the more my magic flares. I don’t force it away as much but I try to dim it. The hair on the back of my neck stands up as I get out of the car. “Do you get a strange vibe from this place too or is it just me?”

He asks me if I get a strange vibe from this place or if it was just him. "No... it feels off." I say feeling a shiver pass up my spine. We head back into crime scene. I take a breath trying to calm my mind to focus on using my magic to track the magic here.
I close my eyes and try to reach out to the magic in the room. It takes effort to find it and take to track who it is off.

I feel his magic flare up and then quickly sputters back out. He fidgets anxiously, saying no pressure but this place was getting to him. "Working on it." I tell him trying to focus. I reach out more trying to track it down.
I pant falling to my knees as I finally find a trace of it. A drop of blood rolls down from my nose. "It's your magic. Dammit." I pant looking at him. "The magic here is yours."

He pales and says what as he drops to his knees besides me. He tilts my head up and wipes away the blood with a tissue. He says that he was never here before and he never used his magic before last night.
"Calm down, rookie. Someone could have stole magic from you. If you didn't use your magic in a long time then you were most likely a well of magic just waiting to be tapped into. The killer probably stole a little to hid his own magic trace." I tell him trying to catch my breath.

He relaxes a little, helping me to my feet and asks me where do we go from here. His phone buzzes and he takes the call. He tells me that they found another body.
"Looks like we are going to go see a body." I say leaning against him. "We can talk more about this whole magic thing later."
He grunts easier said then done and the cab pulls up. He slowly gets in and gives the driver the address before he close the door and nods to me. He tells me he guesses he'll see me tomorrow and says good night.
"Yeah, good night." I say with a nod and wait for the bus. I mean it is not like I expected him to offer to let me ride along even if we were going to the same place. I doubt he would want to be that close to me for that long.
