Bound by Magic

"Yea yea, just don't mess up the crime scene okay." I tell him as he puts on some gloves. I slip mine on and open up my door before I take a breath. I step inside and look around. The air in there was stale by at least it didn't reek of death like it had before.

The air remains tinged with the scent of magic, but only slightly. I look around the apartment as I gingerly pick my way through the chaos. “Were they looking for something?” I ask Lani. Drawers and cupboards hang open. Whoever did this was dead set on finding whatever they wanted. Is there something Lani has that they want? Or do they simply want her?

"I don't think so." I tell him after he asks if they were looking for something. "I don't know what they would be looking for anything. I don't own anything special and I don't stash money here so it wouldn't make sense for them to search through my stuff."
I walk around looking at the mess with a sigh. They had really torn apart my place. So it was either the killer looking through my stuff or the station looking for clues on the killer. Either way it would take forever to clean up once I got back.

Eriks and I both do a sweep of her apartment but find nothing that could be a message—not an obvious one anyway. “Is anything missing?” I ask Lani, returning from the hallway leading to the bedroom. I didn’t enter the room, I only peeked inside. Like the rest of the apartment, the place was turned upside down with no clear motive. The intruder didn’t leave so much as a partial fingerprint. Does that make them seasoned? A rookie killer wouldn’t be as careful as this person. Surely there would’ve been something the killer screwed up. But what?

He asks me if anything is missing. "I don't really know. This place is such a mess it is hard to tell." I say with a sigh as I look around, heading down the hallway to my room. I set around the stuff on the floor and make it over to my night stand.
I check over my jewelry just to make sure nothing was gone. Sure enough everything was there and undisrupted. I step around over to my closet to see if the killer messed with my clothes or anything.
I open the door and freeze as I hear a faint click. In a flash of a second a knife from my kitchen comes flying out. "Ah!" I scream as I try to dodge it but it hits my shoulder. Should have hit me in the heart if I didn't move. "Ezra! Eriks!" I call out in pain. Blood streaming down my arm.

I take off hearing a shrill shriek. Lani screams for me and Eriks. I burst into her room, eyes wide seeing a knife lodged in her shoulder. “Eriks! Find a first aid!” I bark at him, helping Lani sit down so I can inspect the wound. Then I quickly grab a couple shirts off the floor and hold one out to her. “Bite on this. The knife needs to come out. I’ll be quick, but it’s still gonna hurt,” I explain quickly.
With the other shirt in my free hand, I take a deep breath and count to three before swiftly yanking the weapon free. Then I bind her arm tightly to get the bleeding stopped. Well have to worry about bandages later.

Ezra bursts in and looks at me with wide eyes before he barks at Eriks to find the first aid. "Kitchen, cabinet under the toaster over." I pant out as he has be sit down. He grabs a couple of shirts and holds out one to me.
He tells me to bite on it so he can get the knife out but he'll be quick about it. I nod and take a breath as he counts to three and swiftly yanks it free. I scream a little and pant as he tightly bind my arm.
"Damn that hurt." I pant softly. The knife was the freaking bread knife. So those serrated edges were hell coming out. I grip Ezra's arm softly. "Tell Eriks to be careful. I think the killer set traps."

I curse under my breath. “Sorry.” A fucking bread knife? Really? What the fuck? Just then Eriks comes in with a first aid kit. He sets it on the bed and throws it open. Once the bleeding stops I uncover the wound and get to work with it, all my previous experience coming up front and center. Eriks hands me everything I need when I ask for it and in almost no time I’ve got it disinfected, stitched, and bandaged.

Ezra curses under his breath and says sorry. "It's alright. Not the greatest feeling in the world but I survived getting shot as a rookie. I can handled this." I tell him with a little smile.
I sit there quietly as he works. Eriks handing him things to patch me up with. I won't lie hurt like a bitch to get all patched up but at least I wouldn't bleed out.
"Thanks." I say with a nod to them both and look over at my closet. A rig was set up to fling the knife in there. On the door was painted in red. Watch what you touch.
"Damn it, he's taunting me." I growl pissed that he had time to freaking booby trap my own apartment.

“Did you find anything else, Eriks?” I ask him as I close the kit and straighten up. He nods.
“Another knife trap. It was triggered when I picked up the first aid. But I ducked fast enough that it just nicked my ear,” he explains and shows me his ear. I frown and point for him to sit down so I can at least blot his ear. “But other than that, i didn’t find anything. Then again, it’s not like i was looking for traps either.”
He shrugs as I disinfect him and bandage him up. “Guess the killer doesn’t want you to heal,” I mumble under my breath shaking my head.

Ezra asks Eriks if he found anything else and he nods saying he found another knife trap but he ducked fast enough to just get a nick on his ear. He says other than that he didn't find anything else but then again he wasn't looking for traps.
Ezra patches up his ear and mumbles he guesses the killer doesn't want me to heal. I scoff a little and frown.
"I think he rather have my head on a platter but I digress. Either way I think we are done looking for clues here and we should tell the captain in case they come back looking for stuff. I don't want anyone else to get hurt." I say as I get up. My shoulder throbbing.

Eriks starts for the door reluctantly, leaving me and Lani to follow. I stay at her side in case she needs help with her shoulder but meanwhile I’m already on the phone trying to call the chief. She’ll probably have our heads for checking out the apartment but god damn it sitting around like this is making me anxious!

Eriks heads out the door reluctantly. Ezra sticks close to me as he calls up the captain. I lean against him a little as I walk out with him. I lock back up my apartment and head back towards his. I didn't like this one bit. The killer was playing with me and I didn't like that one bit.

I’ve barely explained anything when the chief starts screaming at me over the phone about not following orders and in doing so risked both Eriks and Lani. “Well there’s a certain point where we can’t just sit on our asses waiting for shit to happen! If you didn’t want us going through on our own, give us something to do!” I snap before hanging up without letting her respond.

Ezra snaps at the captain about not giving us something to do and we weren't just going to sit on our asses. He hangs up after that and I sigh knowing we were going to be in trouble for that. I'm just glad we figured things out before someone else got hurt or worse.
I squeeze his leg softly and give him a little smile. "I take it she wasn't happy." I say as we head back into his apartment.

I shake my head as Lani gently squeezes my leg. I lean into her good shoulder and wrap an arm around her waist. “Yeah—not happy in the slightest. She’ll give us hell when we go back but what does she expect when she doesn’t give us anything to do?” I sigh into her shoulder.

He leans against my good shoulder and wraps an arm around my waist. He tells me she isn't happy in the slightest and she give us hell when we get back. He sighs into my shoulder and I stroke his hair softly. I rest my head against his for a moment and sigh.
"I know I don't like it either but there isn't much we can do. The killer is taunting us. We are only going to get him when he wants to be caught."

“Unless the bastard is getting inside help,” I murmur, honestly considering the option in spite of how far fetched it seems. Lifting my head off her shoulder I ask her quietly, “What do you think, Lani? As unlikely as it is, it’s still possible that he’s getting help from someone at the station. That would explain his expertise cleaning up his messes...”

He murmurs unless the killer is getting inside help. He lifts his head up off my shoulder. He asks me what I think and it is unlikely but it was still possible he was getting help from the station.
"It's possible. I mean he got into my office in the station full of officers. He shouldn't have been able to do that." I tell him.

I rub a hand down her back as we step back into my apartment. “Have we looked at the security footage yet?” I don’t remember looking at the tapes from that day in the office. Did we check? I scratch my head trying to remember but coming up blank. “I think we should go down,” I sigh.

He rubs a hand down my back as we head inside his apartment. He asks me if we looked at the security footage yet. He sighs and says he thinks we should go down.
"I didn't have a chance to. The captain sent me home after I saw my office." I tell him and sigh. "I think we should too."

I grab my keys off the table and my jacket. “Let’s Go then. Come on, Eriks. We’ve got work to do!” I call to him as he fills up a travel mug with coffee. He gulps it down as he quickly follows us out the door.

He grabs his keys and jacket, calling out to Eriks who was filling up a travel mug of coffee. He heads out with us and follow the guys down. I'm a little wobbly and my shoulder is throbbing but I manage. I wanted to get to the bottom of this.

We get into the station in a surprisingly quick time. We head into the security office and he starts to look through the tapes. "It was Thursday about seven in the morning when I came in." I tell him as I plop down in a chair. My shoulder throbbing worse then before.
"Does something feel off to you? The station seemed way too quiet when we came in." I tell him.

I nod. “It’s making me nervous,” I mutter under my breath, trying not to focus on the heavy silence. Eriks hovers by the door—I can only assume trying to see someone. The hairs on the back of my prickle but I try to ignore it as I pop in the tape from Thursday.

He nods and mutters it is making him nervous. Eriks hovers at the door as kind of a look out, while Ezra pops in the tape. I scoot over so I can watch it with him. My body on high alert. Something was wrong here. I could just feel it.

I grit my teeth watching the tape. Where the fuck was everybody?? Most of the morning a few people come and go—when no ones around a figure dressed head to toe in dark colors comes through. They have a good up and no mask. They know where the cameras are; they keep their head down. The figure has a lean body, on the tall side. Looks a bit more masculine though. My fingers clench so tightly my knuckles turn white. Who is he?!

There is a figure dressed in dark colors in the video but we can't see their face. They knew where the cameras were and avoided showing us their face. I sigh thinking that wasn't helpful at all. The most I could tell was maybe it was a guy given the build and height but that was what we expected all along.
"Well that wasn't much help." I say with a sigh as I rest my head against his shoulder for a second.

I growl in frustration. My arm slides about Lani’s waist as I take out the tape and put the most recent one in. Maybe there’ll be a hint as to where everyone went. (This might be far fetched by I’m kind of imagining at least a portion of the officers/detectives are in on this plot against Lani because of the guy who killed her parents... but Eriks Not in on it :P Thoughts?)

He growls in frustration and wraps his arm around my waist. I close my eyes a little and I lean against him. His touch soothing my pain as he pops out the tape and put another one in.
(I like that idea a lot! Maybe they could be like his followers or something and want him to get control of Lani's powers.

However! Eriks gets stuck in the middle because he wasn’t accounted for in the plans
I’m also thinking that they’re just being led on a wild goose chase into a trap where the guy finally confronts Lani but I’m not entirely sure how to go about that I’m just tossing ideas)
Ezra
I finally find the point before everyone left. My brows furrow, and I pull out my phone. Huh. “They left just after I called the chief,” I tell her. What is going on?
Then Eriks comes back with a handful of papers. “Hey guys. You might want to see this. It was in the chiefs desk,” he says.
I arch a brow. He shrugs. “It doesn’t take a genius to pick a lock.” He holds out the papers to us.

Lani
He tells me that they all left right after he called the captain. "Someone is pulling the strings here." I mumble and open my eyes as Eriks come back. He tells us we might want to see this and holds out some papers that where on the captain's desk.
I roll my eyes as Eriks tells Ezra it doesn't take a genius to pick a lock. "No just a guy with too much free time and youtube." I say and look back at the papers. "What are they?" I ask reaching out to grab one.

I do want to include his mother in that for sure—maybe when he taps into his magic his emotions get out of hand, making his magic uncontrollable so she has to step in)
Ezra
“Correspondence. Hand written letters to the chief. But there weren’t any envelopes with addresses or anything. Whoever wrote them must’ve been able to get to her directly or even have a messenger,” Eriks explains as I take the letters from him.
All of them were written in a chicken scratch kind of cursive. Barely legible. I can make out a couple words here and there but nothing solid. I hold them out to Lani. “Can you make anything of that?”

Lani
He tells me they are correspondences written to the captain. Just letters with no envelopes and they were all written with pretty bad hand writing. Ezra holds one out to me and asks if I can make anything out.
"I can do you one better. I can make it readable." I tell them and close my eyes focusing. I raise my one hand over the letters and wave it across them. They glow and the letters seem to float off the paper before they become solid text.
"Ta-da." I say panting a little. That shouldn't taken much magic to cast but I felt drained.

Ezra
I frown watching her work her magic on the letter. “Don’t push yourself,” I whisper in her ear. My hand strokes her back as I hold her steady. She’s already injured—trying to use her magic on top of that isn’t doing her any favors. I look over the letters. I scratch my jaw. Something about “taking the bait” and some meeting place. I stiffen when Lani’s name comes up, my fist clenched on my lap. I get down to the bottom of the letter but there’s no signature, no anything.

Lani
He whispers for me not to push myself. "It's okay. Just a little tired from my injury. He looks at the letter and I can make out a few things. My name is one of them. He clenches his fist and I rest against.
"So does this mean the captian is in on it or did she find this?" I say trying to figure it out.

Ezra
“Well it’s be suspicious of her for her to just have found it. It’s be more so if she’s in on it but a hell of a lot more plausible,” I say, trying to look for dates, times, or anything. “Was there anything else with these in her desk?” I ask Eriks.
Another no. He shakes his head in disappointment. “Nothing. I did try to boot up her computer but it’s password locked and I didn’t want to risk her getting notified,” he answers.

Lani
He agrees it is suspicious even more so if she is on it. He asks Eriks if there is anything more. Eriks shakes his head and tells him there was nothing but he tried to boot up her computer.
"I could try to pull from the memories on the keyboard." I tell them starting to get up to go take a look. I sway and tumble a little. The world seems to spin as I start to collapse to the ground.
Glowing lines descend down my arm from the stub wound on my shoulder. Damn it the knife must have been poisoned for magic users. It was draining my magical energy and hindering my ability to regain it.

“Lani. Stop.” It comes out more like a growl than actual words. I catch her before she can hit the floor and help her into a desk chair. Eriks’ brows furrow with worry. Then I go ahead and take a seat at the chief’s desk. Popping my finger joints I boot up the computer and try a couple tricks to unlock her account.

Ezra growls for me to stop before he catches me in his arms. I pant as he helps me into a desk chair. Eriks looks at me worried. "I'm fine. I just need a minute." I tell them, leaning back against the chair.
Ezra works away on the computer trying to get open the captain's computer. I close my eyes taking a breath as focus on working past the poison.

My first instinct screams for me to take Lani Home. It takes me only a moment to get in the chiefs account. From there I pass the task over to Eriks so I can check on Lani’s wound. I move the bandage trying to get a look. She kind of slumps in the chair. I lift her face and check her eyes, noticing small indicators that she’s not well. “Don’t you dare say you’re fine,” I say as I check her over. “Is it from the knife?”

He comes over and moves my bandage a little. I wince slightly and then I feel his fingers lift up my face as he checks my eyes. He says not to dare say I'm fine and asks if it is from the knife.
"I think so. There must have been magic user poison coated on it." I say showing him my arm and the glowing cracked lines at had spread to my elbow. "It's draining my magic. Until I work it out of my system I'll be majorly weaken. To use any magic I would have to pull from my reserves and that means using my life form. Not something I want to do but I will if things grow dire."

I touch her arm gingerly, my magic flowing freely into hers—without so much as a thought. I don’t know if it’ll help but my magic spills over into hers trying to keep her at least stable for now. (Also you can control Eriks too:) I’m not sure what he should find on the computer XD)

He touches my arm softly and I feel his magic flow into my body. He was in a way feeding me magic to keep myself stable enough. I push him away after a minute or so.
"No more. You need your energy. If someone attacks at least one of us should be able to fight back." I tell him. I was a little bit better but still pretty off thanks to the poison.
(Hmm depends do you want the captain to be in on it???)

Ezra
I sigh. “Please don’t argue with me. Not all fights are fought using magic.” Taking her hand I squeeze it gently then turn to look over Eriks shoulder while he sorts through the chief’s documents. So far, nothing out of the ordinary.

Lani
He sighs and tells me not to argue with him, that not all fights are fought using magic. "This one will be, trust me. Even if it is not magic can give you an advantage." I say softly as he squeezes my hand and looks over Erik's shoulder.
I rest my head against Ezra's shoulder. I hoped the captain wasn't in on it but at the moment it really wasn't looking good.

Ezra
Eriks scrolls through email after email before I grab the mouse. “Stop! That one!” He moves over as i take control again. My eyes skim the paragraphs detailing Lani’s day-to-day whereabouts and mine. I grit my teeth angrily. She’s been tailing us. And she knows we’re bonded.
Fuck.

He grabs the mouse from Eriks and says to stop and look at that one. He glances over an email. I glance over his shoulder at it as he grits his teeth. It was an email detailing my whereabouts and Ezra's. She knew where we had gone and that we were bonded.
"Damn... she's in on it." I mumble pissed. "Can we track who she sent it to?" I ask and glance over at the doorway as I hear a door slam close. "Scratch that we need to get out of here."
“Don’t worry I’m not gonna touch anything if it’s not necessary. I’m not a barbarian, I’m just twitchy,” Eriks explains himself as he snaps on a pair of the blue latex. I slide some on as well before i step aside so Lani can unlock the door.
