Bookwyrm Ouroboros Ezra
I mumble a curse before my fingers start flying across the keyboard, logging out of everything quickly. As always, eriks’ Hand rests on his gun in the holster at his waist. For once I don’t fight him on it and just help Lani to her feet, being sure to keep her close to me, almost nudging her behind me.

He mumbles a curse and logs the computer out of everything as Eriks' hand rest on his gun. Ezra helps me up and keeps me close and nudges me slightly behind him. I clutch the back of his shirt.

"We need to go. I can try and cloak us so we can get out of here." I tell him. It would burn magic I didn't have but we needed to get out of here before anyone saw us.

Bookwyrm Ouroboros Ezra
“Don’t even think about it,” I argue protectively and nudge her backwards into an empty office. Eriks follows close behind and kills the light before silently closing the door. I peek through the blinds to see who the intruder is. My jaw clenched seeing the chief come in, followed by a squad of five or six. All wearing freaking riot gear. Through the slits I see the chief scoop up her phone and speed dials someone.

A deep voice answers with a snappy tone. “They’re on to us,” the chief says. “I don’t think we should wait anymore. If we don’t she’ll slip away from you just like before.”

He argues not to even think about it and nudges me backward into an empty office. Eriks closes the door behind us and cuts the lights. Ezra peeks through the blinds and I lean against him slightly as I hear the captain talking to someone.

They knew that we were onto them. They were planning to strike before it was too late. I squeeze his arm softly, worried what would happen if they strike now. I couldn't defend myself against them while I was injured and drained of magic.

Bookwyrm Ouroboros Ezra
I hold her against me, waiting for the chief to leave. The person on the phone growls something incoherent which sets her on edge. “We’ll find her. And that puppy of hers too, no worries there. All I’m saying is that we briefly lost our eyes on them. They couldn’t have gone far—“

She snaps her fingers and makes a sweeping motion with her arm. Quickly I latch the door and try feeling around in the dark for any other ways out. But then Eriks grabs my wrist and gestures to the window. I inspect it for a fire escape or anything we can use to get down, but it looks like there are only partial sections. I bite my lip

He holds me against him as the captain continues to talk to whoever was on the phone. She tells them that they will find me and Ezra. They just lost sight of us for a moment but we could be far. She snaps her fingers and Ezra jumps up to latch the door before the two of them looks for a way out of here.

"We have to get out of here." I whisper in a deadly quiet tone. I didn't want to risk alerting the captain that we where here. "Can we break the window?"

Bookwyrm Ouroboros Ezra
“We need to block the door first. Otherwise we’ll get unwanted attention,” I say softly as I scramble to grab one end of a desk. Eriks grabs the other side without a word and helps me barricade the door with it. Then I point over to the chair then the window. He nods understandingly and lifts it, pulling it back a bit before lunging forward through the window. Glass shatters around us. I keep Lani out of the way. Then Eriks clears out the last bits of glass so we don’t cut ourselves and slips onto the fire escape. He holds out a hand to help Lani out. Suddenly there’s six different voice shouting on the other side of the door. I bite my lip as they start pounding on the door.

He tells me we need to block the door first and scrambles to get stuff to barricade the door. Eriks helps him and then heads over to grab a chair Ezra pointed to. He shatters the window with it and clears away the glass.

I grab his hand as he helps me through. Voices can be hear on the other side of the door and they start pounding on the door. "Ezra, come on." I whisper reaching out for him.

Bookwyrm Ouroboros Ezra
“I’m coming,” I whisper back as I hop through the window. The door creaks as it begins to give. “Go Go Go!” I hiss as the three of us scramble down the fire escape ladders and catwalks. We’re about halfway down when I hear a deafening crack of splitting wood. Fuck! For the last bit, the ladder ends, so Eriks hops down so he can help Lani. I take her good hand and squeeze reassuringly. “Hurry. Eriks will catch you, he’s right there.”

Gemma (gemthebookworm) | 7918 comments Lani

He whispers he is coming and hops through the window to join us on the fire escape. He hisses to go and we hurry down the fire escape. About hallway down we hear wood cracking above us and we reach the end of the fire escape. Eriks leaps down and Ezra takes my good hand telling me that Eriks will catch me.

"You better be right behind me." I tell him seriously and I draw him in for a quick kiss. I let go of his hand and take a breath as I hop down. I sigh in relief as Erik's arms wrap around me and I land in his arms.

Above us I can see the captain and a few others making their way out onto the fire escape. "Hurry." I call to Ezra.

Bookwyrm Ouroboros Ezra
Lani kisses me briefly making me promise I’ll be behind her. I nod and hop down to the ground before they can catch me. “Let’s Go,” i breathe, taking her hand and bolting down the sidewalk. Eriks sprints beside us like a professional runner. I try going towards the parking garage where the car is but quickly spin on my heels seeing a couple patrol cars.

He hops down before they can catch him and says let's go as he grabs my hand. We bolt down the sidewalk. Eriks running behind us as we head to the parking garage. Ezra jerks to a stop and turns on his heels as he see a couple of patrol cars.

"We need to get to my car or a car at this point. We can't out run them on foot if they have cars." I tell him.

Bookwyrm Ouroboros Ezra
I chew the inside of my cheek as I try thinking while we run. Then a taxi dropping off a passenger catches my eye across the street. “Over there!” I take off across the road and catch the cabbie before he leaves, helping Eriks and Lani in.

message 514: by Gemma (new)

Gemma (gemthebookworm) | 7918 comments Lani

We all run until Ezra spots a cab and he says over there. We all take off that way. He reaches it first flagging down the cabbie before Eriks and I catch up. We all pile into the cab.

"Where to?" He asks us.

"Anywhere just punch it and get away from here." I say panting a little as I buckle up.

Bookwyrm Ouroboros Ezra
I gotta hand it to the guy. He floors it. If we hadn’t buckled in I would’ve been thrown into the front seat. I hold on tight as our driver weaves seamlessly through traffic like a ghost. Looking behind us in the back window I curse seeing two patrol cars in pursuit. Blood roaring in my ears, I lean forward in my seat to give the guy directions. But out of nowhere another cruiser rams my side of the car.

Shards of glass slash across my face. Grabbing Lani I tuck her under me, curling her into my chest. I hold her tightly feeling the car being thrown off the road, rolling until my ears are ringing and pain paralyzes me. The seat belt locked keeping both me and Eriks in place. Something warm drips down my face.

Darkness dots my vision as I struggle to figure our position. I don’t realize we’re upside down until I see uniformed feet approaching the car. My head screams for me to move but my body refuses to listen. My arms lock tightly around Lani. “L-lani,” I huff, fighting to stay awake.

message 516: by Gemma (new)

Gemma (gemthebookworm) | 7918 comments Lani

I scream as another cruiser comes out of nowhere and rams Ezra's side of the car. He curls me into his chest, protecting me as the window shatters and the car is thrown off the road. The car rolls until we land upside down, suspended thanks to the seat belts.

"Ezra!" I say worried as he keeps his arms around me tight and huffs out my name. Blood dripping down his face. "Oh god. Stay with me." I say urgently as his eyes start to flicker closer. I rest my hands on his face trying to use some of my magic to boost his healing. Even if it was just for a second it would help. But I couldn't I was tapped because of the poison.

The door opens and hands reach across to cut me free. I kick and scream weakly as they drag me out of the car. "No! Ezra!" I scream as they haul me up. I start to draw from my reserves not caring how it would hurt me. I had to help Ezra. But I don't get the chance as something pricks me in the arm.

"No... I won't... won't let you." I slur as my vision starts to blur. I slump to the ground as my body grows limp and someone picks me up carrying me away. A single tear rolls down my cheek as the last thing I see is them carrying me away from the cab. Away from an injured Ezra.

Bookwyrm Ouroboros Agathe
Something had gone wrong. Horribly wrong. My stomach churns with nerves. Quickly I teleport myself to where I sense Ezra. My heart shatters seeing the car all twisted up and flipped. Then I look over to see a bunch of officers carrying an unconscious Lani away. My eyes water as I look between the car and Lani.

We’ll find her. I just know it. We’ll find Lani.

I run over to the car and carefully pick my way through the debris. Ezra and another man slump in their seats, held up only by the seatbelts. One by one I carefully release them both, tears staining my cheeks. Both of them have sustained multiple wounds—most of them minor with the exception of a broken arm and a concussion.

Teleporting is back to my small home in an apartment I make haste in helping them both. The man with Ezra has a concussion. Ezra’s broken arm should heal relatively quickly with his magic. Please. Please. Don’t let them hurt Lani.

I smile in a twisted grin as I watch video feed of my minions carrying the girl away from the scene. Finally she was all mine. My fingers tap the desk rapidly as I watch the feed. Soon power beyond anyone's wildest dream would be mine.

Honestly, did the magic council think they could just let a girl with that much power walk around free. Either way it is their loss. I call up the captain I had under my thumb and grin a little wider.

"Is it done?" I asks.

"Yes, sir. We have the girl and the puppy dog is out of commission at the moment. Nothing to worry about from him." She says.

"Perfect. Deliver her to my warehouse as soon as possible." I say before hanging up. Soon my little dove, I'll snap those wings and take your magic for my own.

Bookwyrm Ouroboros Ezra
I jolt awake with a bolt of pain slicing through my arm, which remains wrapped tightly in a cast on my chest. I groan as i force myself up and look around to inspect the unfamiliar terrain. It takes me a full minute to process Lani’s not here. I leap to my feet to get moving only to crumble to my knees. I gasp and grit my teeth.

Somewhere I Here another low groaning. I turn and find Eriks bandages up too, stretched out on another couch. His head lolls around and his eyes flutter. “Eriks? Eriks, can you hear me?” I ask him softly.

His lips move in sort of a mumble but it takes him a while until he’s conscious. “Where are we?”

“I don’t know, but somewhere Lani’s not. We need to go,” I urge him. He nods slowly and tries to push himself up, but he doesn’t get far before he falls back clutching his head.

I groggily wake up with a moan as I try to sit up. I groan as I jerk a little and find myself stuck. Shackles hold my wrists in place and I am trapped to a table. I try to magic the shackles but they deflect it.

"Ah my little dove is awake. How lovely." A gravely voice says from the shadows. I look around trying to make out who it is but they are hidden by the darkness.

"Let me go! You have no idea who you are dealing with." I yell as I struggle.

"Oh I do and believe me I'm going to enjoy draining you dry. Watching the magic flow from your body to mine and then watching the life drain out of your eyes as I kill you."

Bookwyrm Ouroboros Sorry I was gone! I had my grad party today. While fun it was exhausting!!

I meant to ask earlier but did you want Ezra to just get up and go find Lani and confront the killer or is he going to have to suffer through more cat and mouse chases before he finds her?)

message 522: by Gemma (new)

Gemma (gemthebookworm) | 7918 comments (No worries! Hmm I'd say that is up to you since he is your character. I'm done for either way though)

Bookwyrm Ouroboros Oh ok)

Ezra
After the failed attempt of Eriks trying to fit up I have no choice but to let him stay wherever we are to rest. I look for any clues who brought us here. The only thing I find is a neatly written note on the coffee table where I had been. Picking up the note I read it over carefully.

No need to worry about your friend. No harm will come to him, I promise, but if you’re going save Lani, you need to hurry. I will watch over him.

Please, my love. Save her.

~ Mother

I do a double take. My finger traces the word ‘mother’. Swallowing, I set the note down. Looking at Eriks, who’s already fallen back to sleep, i take a big breath and find my shoes. I drape my jacket over the sling cradling my broken arm and make for the door.

All the while, my magic flaring up again and senses on edge already in search of Lani.

The voice leaves me alone, saying he had things to take care of first before he gets to me. Great. I struggle at my shackles for the first bit until I am sure my ankles and wrists are raw from my efforts yet the shackles still stay firmly in place.

I stare up at the ceil, watching the dim light blub above me swing. The grainy light barely casting enough light to light up beyond where I lay. I sigh frustrated and trapped. My magic was a bust thanks to that poison still in my system.

My thoughts turn to Ezra the longer I lay there. Was he alright? He had been bleeding pretty bad when they tore me out of the cab. What about Eriks? I'm sure he was hurt too from that crash. I just hoped they were both okay. That someone had found them and helpped.

Bookwyrm Ouroboros Ezra
Her ... essence? I don’t how to put it. She’s close by, I know it. As faint as she is from the poison, I can still track her from the other side of the city. I don’t waste time calling another cab and having them take me over within a couple blocks of where Lani is being held. My head pounds from all of the sudden movements.

Throwing whatever I owed at the driver I leap out of the car and jogging. I could Lani’s presence more now. It didn’t take long to find out which building she’s in. Her magic gives off something like heat of its own, shining like a beacon in the middle of the dreary, dead streets.

Circling the building a couple times I decide on entering through a busted window—careful not to jostle my arm nor to hurt myself anymore. I move carefully in the darkness as I listen for any voices. My chest tightens hearing Lani’s familiar tone. Moving silently in the shadows I find myself positioned on a catwalk right above a brightly lit stretch of concrete floor. Following the voices through the network of rails and platforms I have to stop myself from making a sound at the sight of Lani. Her wrists and ankles remain bound in heavy shackles like a prison inmate’s. My magic flares responding to her weak energy. I hold my breath when I finally see her captor.

After a while the shadow man comes back, stepping into the light for the first time. I could never forget that face, not as long as I lived. He was my parent's killer. I had been right.

"It's time little dove to give me that magic of yours." He coos as his fingers reach out to stroke my cheek.

"Like hell." I spat at him. His hand strikes me across my cheek so hard I practically see stars.

"I was going to do this nicely but now I don't think you deserve that." He hiss and I see him lift up a purple crystal point. It was thinner on one end like a spike and thicker at the other. A magic syphoning crystal.

He drives it into my shoulder were I had been wounded. I scream in agony as it reopens the wound and then sits firmly in my flesh. It starts to glow as I feel my magic being sucked out of me.

"Soon I will be unstoppable." The killer says with a twisted grin watching as I twitch and squirm in pain. Blood dipping down into the table from my shoulder. But I could feel Ezra. He was close, his magic trying to flare with mine. He was still alive, thank god.

Bookwyrm Ouroboros Ezra
All reason flies out the window hearing Lani’s screams. My muscles bunch like a cat ready to pounce and I leap down from my perch. Magic burns in my veins and a feral snarl tears out of my throat. “Let. Her. Go,” i snap at him. Before he turns I lunge for him, tearing him away from Lani. I slam him down into the floor and punch him across the jaw.

Energy bursts from me like a pulse, but he doesn’t go down easily. His eyes widen and he scrambles beneath me. As if my bones were never broken, I lock my right arm around his neck even as he scratches me face. He fiddled with something, but I don’t realize what it is until it’s too late.

He plunges another purple spike into my back. I howl but that doesn’t stop my assault. Just then the spike, still embedded in my skin, shatters. The bastard’s face pales in a panic.

Red clouds my vision.

Agathe
After tending to Ezra’s friend and returning him to his wife and daughter, I set out to find my son. It didn’t take long—I stumble feeling a surge of energy electrifying the air. Rage fuels the magic at the heart of it all. Ezra. I make haste in following the “aftershocks”.

When I arrive at the warehouse my breath catches in my throat. Everything is barely being held together. I rush to Lani’s side as the crystal saps her magic. While I can’t safely remove it I murmur a spell to give us some more time.

Then I hurry to Ezra and grab his shoulders, stopping him. He fights me. “Ezra, love. Stop. He’s gone. Shh... my love stop. She will be okay. I’ve bought us some time but it won’t last. Let him go. Calm yourself.”

With a gentle touch I stroke his forehead. As if someone’s flipped a switch, he collapses in my arms.

I hear a snarl and Ezra is there snapping at the killer to let me go. The killer starts to turn but Ezra lunges at him, tearing him away fro me. He slams him into the floor and the two start to fight. His magi burst from him and the killer looks at him with terrified eyes.

Ezra's magic was nearly as strong as my own and the killer realized it. He tries to get away but Ezra locks his arm around his neck. The killer tries to scratch at his face and I scream seeing him drive a purple crystal into Ezra's back.

"Ezra!" I cry out as he howls in pain. The crystal seems to glow bright, so bright until it shatters and the killer pales. Holy wow... I didn't think I have ever seen anyone shatter a crystal like that.

He never let's go of the killer though and soon his mother is by my side. She casts a spell and I feel the effects of the crystal lessen some. She hurries to Ezra and tries to get him to stop. He finally lets go of the killer and collapses in his mom's arms as she calms him.

I sigh, glad he was save. My vision starts to blur a little and I feel light headed from the loss of blood and magic. My head lulls to the side as my eyes close.

Bookwyrm Ouroboros Ezra
My eyes fly open and I raise my arm to protect myself. Distant voices try not to shout as hands gently push my arms back down to the bed. I twitch anxiously as my eyes blink trying to adjust to the blinding light. “Ezra,” a gentle voice croons.

My eyes dart to the left to find who spoke. A regal looking woman with dark hair sits by my bed, looking weary. I blink. She doesn’t need to say anything for me to know who she is. “Mother,” i say softly.

Tears fill her eyes. A smile plays across her lips. Then she reaches for my hand, being careful with the iv attached to me. “Where am I? Where Lani?” I demand and push myself up only to slump back against the pillows.

She shushes me and strokes my hair back. “Calm down. She’s alright. You’re both in a hospital and before you go looking for her it’s safe here. The patients and staff are all magic users. Lani had to have surgery to remove the crystal. She’s already out, but she may still be sleeping. She’s right in the next room. Okay? She’s safe. You’re safe. But right now you need rest. You nearly killed yourself releasing all that energy.”

She touches my cheek before leaving to get me some food.

I awaken in a hospital bed. A monitor beeping besides me. I groan softly as I try to sit up and a nurse comes in. She softly guides me to lay back down as she explains what happened after I passed out. That Ezra's mother had me taken here and I had to have surgery to remove the crystal from my shoulder, so my right arm use would be limited right now.

"Ezra Dennan... is he here? Is he okay?" I ask her worried about him. He had come to safe me, he had gotten hurt because of me.

"Yes, ma'am. He is in the room next door. His injuries have been well looked after and he will make a full recovery in no time. I'll talk with his mother about having him wheeled over for a visit soon." She tells me.

"Thank you." I say leaning back against the pillow with a sigh. "Could you tell him I'm awake... that I miss him." I add quietly. The nurse smiles and nods as she head out of my room.

I sigh looking at the ceiling. Was it really over? Was the killer, the man who killed my parent, really gone? I hoped so.

Bookwyrm Ouroboros Ezra
My day is a rush of hourly check ups, exams, visits with my mother, and awkward bathroom solutions. The doctor says i won’t be here too much longer—a few days at the most. I rely on my mother to tell me what exactly happened. I don’t remember much of anything from that night, but whatever I did cost me enough energy that I’m struggling to move any of my limbs.

The doc seems convinced it’ll all return in time with my accelerated healing, so I don’t argue. But I do argue when they won’t let me see Lani. I almost have to pout, but before that a nurse comes in to pass a message from Lani herself. I have to smile.

With a sigh, my mother and a nurse help me into a wheelchair with an iv bag hanging on a pole attached to the back. Mother rolls me to the next room to see her, and I brighten up immediately. Once my chair is at her side, my mother gives us a couple minutes to ourselves.

Seeing her in the flesh, alive, healthier—I’m able to relax. With a shaky hand I slowly reach over to take her hand.

The rest of my day is boring to say the least. Nurses and doctors fussing over me, check ups, exams, talks with a physical therapist for my shoulder. I just wanted to see Ezra but they keep telling me he was busy with his own check ups and exams.

I glance over as I finally hear a wheelchair, rolling into my room. I perk up seeing Ezra there with an iv pole. His mom rolls him over to me and gives a couple of minutes alone.

He reaches for my hand and I reach for his with my good arm. I squeeze so glad he was alive. "Thank you... for coming after me." I say softly feeling tears form. "I was afraid that I wouldn't ever see you again."

Bookwyrm Ouroboros Ezra
I lean in to rest my forehead against hers. “You can’t get rid of me that easily,” I murmur tiredly, pulling away to kiss her forehead. My fingers squeeze hers feebly. Then I lay my head on the edge of her bed and rest my eyes for a moment, all the while my thumb stroking the back of her hand. I don’t say much; I just listen and enjoy the quiet with Lani right beside me. The quiet I’m sure both of us desperately need.

He leans over to rest his forehead against mine and murmurs tiredly that I can't get rid of him so easily. He pulls away to kiss my forehead and I sigh softly as he squeezes my hand softly. He rests his head on the edge of my bed as his eyes close a little. His thumb strokes the back of my hand.

We enjoy the silence as we enjoy being near each other again. My other hand lifts up just enough to rest on his head. It takes effort but I stroke his hair softly, closing my eyes as I relax. We were both alive, that's all that mattered to me.

Bookwyrm Ouroboros Ezra
I think I fall asleep with my head on her bed, but if anyone disturbs us they certainly don’t try to move me. I wake up with Lani’s hand resting on my disheveled head. Rubbing my eyes I yawn and smile seeing my lover resting too. I reach over and touch her cheek. My lips brush her cheek.

A nurse comes in and checks on the both of us. She doesn’t seem to mind our intimacy. She simply does the hourly check up before leaving. I inch closer to Lani and lay my head back down, my eyes fluttering closed again. My body aches still but I’m simply too tired to care. Were both safe. We’re alright.

We sit together for a while until he falls asleep leaning against my bed. I end up falling asleep as well. For once it is peaceful. I feel safe knowing he was by my side. I wake up a bit later when the nurse comes in to check on us and do our hourly check up.

She leaves us alone again and Ezra scoots closer, laying his head back down as his eyes start to close again. "Come lay up here with me. The bed is big enough for us both." I whisper softly not wanting him to sleep in that cramped up chair.

“I would if I could move,” I murmur. “I have nothing left in me to move.” I i nuzzle her hand and kiss her fingers, holding onto her as I lay my head on my arms. “The doc says I’ll be fine in a few days, just need rest is all.” Raising my head slightly I look up to meet her gaze.

“My mother said I was almost gone because of how much energy i gave out. I don’t remember what happened though. All I remember was you screaming...” I squeeze my eyes shut not wanting to remember.

I rest over a little and page the nurse so she could maybe help him up into my bed. He needed to rest too from the sound of it. He tells me about how he was almost gone because he released so much energy.

"You did. It was kind of insane. Your magic was almost as strong as mine." I say softly and draw his hand up to my lips. "You saved me, Ezra. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you."

Bookwyrm Ouroboros Ezra
By the time I’m half asleep again, a nurse comes in to help me into bed beside Lani. I feel a slight tug from the IV bag as the nurse adjusts it at my side. My body slumps in the bed and curls automatically around Her small body. “I love you so much, Lani,” my lips whisper into her ear. I affectionately stroke her hair away from her face and slide my arms around her slim waist.

I check in on Ezra and Lani every now and then. When Lani has him moved into her bed I have to smile. They sleep side by side, curled into each other as if they were one body.

By the fourth day in the hospital—almost a week and a half after everything happened—Ezra is cleared to go home. He’s a little wobbly on his feet but the doctor said simple exercises will help him strengthen him again.

"Love you too, Ezra." I whisper to him as I rest my head against his chest. I start to doze off with him and soon we are both fast asleep.

On our fourth day at the hospital Ezra is cleared to go home. He is still a little weak but the doctor said with a few exercises he'll be back to his old self in no time.

The doctor clears me as well seeing that I had come out of surgery fine and had no lingering complications. I would have to work with a physical therapist for a bit to get my right arm back to normal but besides that I head healed up well.

I snuggle against Ezra's side as we walk down to the car with his mother. She had been here everyday checking on us both. Eriks stopped in as well. His head was doing much better and he was glad to here we were both okay.

Lani and I support each other as we walk with my mother to the car. I help Lani into the back of the car and slide into the front, grunting with the effort. Jesus, i feel like an old man having to move so slowly. Beside me my mother buckles up and pulls out of the lot.

“So, now that you both are free to go, what do you say to a Home cooked dinner? My treat,” she offers with a kind smile. I nod.

“Sounds good to me. Saves me the trouble of ordering takeout,” I reply with a faint smile and look back to to Lani. “What do you say, Lani?”

Ezra nods and says it sounds good to him and smile a little. He looks back at me and asks what I had to say. "Sound lovely to me." I tell them with a smile.

I rest back against the seat as his mother pulls out of the hospital parking lot.

Bookwyrm Ouroboros Ezra
There’s not much chatter in the car. While my mother and I have spent a little time over the past week trying to get to know one another (or rather me getting to know her) there’s still much we haven’t discussed. But those are conversations for another time.

We park right in front of her building and follow her inside. It’s convenient, really. She lives on the first floor with a window to view the street. Her apartment itself isn’t huge but it’s comfortable. Tidy, too.

She floats about the kitchen preparing dinner and refuses my attempts to help. That leaves me only one option: to sit awkwardly on the couch. I fidget in place. Even with Lani here with me this whole thing seems surreal. I never thought I would meet my mother, let alone accompanying her for dinner with my girlfriend.

I'm quiet for most of the ride letting those to chat if they wished. Soon she parks in found of a building and we head inside to her first floor apartment. Thank heavens for that I don't think Ezra or I could make it up stairs right now.

His mom heads over to the kitchen to start cooking and shoos him away as he offers to help. So he plops down on the couch with me. I snuggle up to him and kiss his cheek as he fidgets.

"I'm sure you can help out next time when you are feeling stronger. She most likely just wants to make sure you don't push yourself. You are still healing after all." I tell him softly.

“I suppose so,” I sigh. Leaning into Lani I hug her and kiss her temple as we sit on the couch with mom moving around the kitchen and some sitcom on the tv supplementing background noise.

Looking over I watch my mother stirring something in a crockpot. Whatever it is, it smells delicious. Then my mother fills three bowls, bringing two over for Lani and me. Taking a bowl I thank her and sniff. My stomach growls. Chicken soup. Homemade at that. “I started it last night, when I heard you two could come home. Cooking it for eight hours makes the chicken just fall apart,” she says.

I smile at my mom. She kisses my forehead before going to grab her own bowl. Dipping my spoon into the broth I take a bite. The soup warms me up—not that I’m cold, but in a comforting way.

He sighs and says he supposes so as he hugs me to him and kisses my temple. The tv in the background playing some sitcom as his mother moves around in the kitchen. He watches her as his mom pours some soup in a bowl for us.

She tells us she made it yesterday when she heard we could come home. "It's smells great!" I say with a smile as I blow on my bowl of soup. I take a bite of it and hum softly. It was warm and delicious, comforting in a way.

It remembered me of when my mom would make chicken noodle soup for me when I was sick. I didn't even realize that tears had filled my eyes until one drops into the soup.

Tears stain Lani’s cheeks as she sits staring into her bowl of soup. I move to check on her but Ezra beats me to it, kissing away the tears on her face. I smile at the couple and get myself a glass of water from the kitchen. I bring them water also and get settled in my comfy chair.

Just then my pittie mix Peppermint comes lumbering out of my bedroom, taking her sweet time yawning and stretching from one of her numerous naps. She lopes over to me and licks my hand. I scratch her behind the ears before she goes to greet my son and Lani. I smile. “I forgot to introduce you. This is my puppy Peppermint,” I tell them as the pup wakes up a bit more, sniffing and trying to hop onto their laps.

Ezra draws me to him kissing away my tears. I sniffle and wipe my eyes. "I'm sorry it just reminded me of something my mom would do when I was sick." I tell them softly as his mom gets up to get a drink. She beings back some water for us and I thank.

We eat and drink as a little puppy comes out looking sleepy. She makes her way over to her master and licks her hand before coming over to us.

"Aw she's precious." I coo as she hops up into our laps. I shift my soup onto the table to pet her little head.

Lani mentions her mother caring for her when she was sick. I smile lovingly at her and touch her cheek as little peppermint scrabbles up onto our laps. She immediately takes to Lani, licking her face and wagging her tail. I reach over and scratch her little chin. Her butt wiggles happily. “She’s going to be a bear when she’s full grown,” I chuckle as I size her paws—paws she still has to grow into.

“Yeah, But we still have some time before then,” my mom answers in between spoonfuls of soup. While Lani plays with the fuzzy blue-gray pup I inhale the soup. Ugh—hospital food doesn’t hold a candle to homemade food. I set my empty bowl aside after and play a bit with peppermint, waiting a moment before I ask, “Has anything been done? Since that night?”

My mother hesitates. Setting her bowl down she sits back and fiddles with a strand of hair. “Nothing has been said. Half of the police department has disappeared, along with the Captain of the force, but there wasn’t any reason found yet,” she replies softly, “After you and Lani were taken to the hospital, I stayed to give my statement to the authorities. There was not much to say, however; there wasn’t enough left of the body to identify it.”

I pet the sweet pup for a bit while she licks my face wagging her tail. Ezra and his mom talk about that night and if anything more had happened. His mom tells us most of the police department disappeared along with the captain.

I pass Peppermint over to Ezra as I dig into my soup. "The magic council most likely moved in. They were willing to give me freedom because it was what I wanted but an attempt at my life or to take my magic is enough to get them involved." I tell them.

"I doubt you were hear anything more on the topic. They prefer to stay out of the media and on the air of the unknown. They also prefer to deal with situations on their terms." I explain. I had grown up under the magic council's watch because of my power and the loss of my parents. That's why I had an alter ego I used when I would go taken down rouge magic users.
