R16: Team #8 ~ Chapter Chicks

Can't blame you about the Scarlet Letter. What made it worse was having to discuss it in class.
I LOVE Ready Player One. I just recently reread it. I can't wait to see the movie in a couple of weeks.

I love Nalini too. Can’t say I’m real excited by this new series she’s got going with the other changelings, but I’m still hanging in there and hoping they get better. But I might pass on

Shelf #2 - Immortals

Rating: ★★★
Completed: 3/18
Final Thoughts:
This one was pretty decent though it felt kind of basic. I guessed who the traitor was pretty early on. It's never the most obvious so I wasn't fooled. I will definitely checking out the rest of the series. Especially Moros' book. His character was the most interesting to me.

Week 2: Immortals
Book: One Foot in the Grave
Author: Jeaniene Frost
Date Finished: 3/19/18
Rating: ★★★★
How it fits: Shelved 12x; 357 pgs
Review: Even though I enjoyed the first book, I probably would not have picked up the second book so soon if I hadn't run into my friend, Samantha, last weekend. It's nothing personal, I just have so many series going right now that I really didn't want to add another just yet. But, her gushing about Cat & Bones after all the times she's listened to me gush about books, I knew I had to read it sooner rather than later.
This installment was fast-paced, full of revelations, and lots of fun. I can see why Samantha (and just about everyone else) loves this series.

THE BANGLES BOOK TAG

7. Following – What book deserves more love?

1. Eternal Flame – What book will you never lose passion for?
I re-read The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry on the regular ... it's my go-to book when I'm feeling down, when I need advice about love or when I just need a little bit of hope. It's been my #1 book of all time for like 25 years.

2. Manic Monday – What book helped you zone out when life was manic?
Hands down, the best series for escapism is the Immortals After Dark by Kresley Cole.

3. Walk like an Egyptian – What book took you to a country you have never visited?
The Beat and the Pulse series by Amity Cross takes place in Austrailia. So good ... so steamy. Yum. Who knew I was interested in MMA??

4. In your room- What book or series is you guilty pleasure?
Sinners on Tour by Olivia Cunning made me blush almost the whole way through. Holy moly!

5. Hero takes a fall – Which hero do you wish didn’t succeed?
America Singer from The Selection by Kiera Cass. I read the 1st 3 books with my daughter last year and it was miserable. This series was the worst. I just kept wishing that she would fall off a cliff.

6. Hazy shade of winter – Which book puts you in a good mood?
The Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. I just love Oberon!

7. Following – What book deserves more love?
The Fallen Angels Series by J.R. Ward. Devina is probably my favorite villian of all time.

I love Lisa Kleypas and her Wallflower series

England and Scotland for just about any historical I have read.
As far as several countries in one book,

BDB

I think I'm going to have to check out this series w/ Van in it. 2nd time you've mentioned it and I'm totally curious!

Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this one, it was a perfect way to spend a few hours this weekend. I thought the fallen angel Olivia was a great match for Aeron. I loved their banter and the way she stood up to him but still maintained that wonderful innocence and innate kindness that made her who she was. I did think the ending was a bit too easy, but at least the author didn't (view spoiler) I am definitely looking forward to reading more books in the series. Who knows, I might even get caught up on it this year! I can only hope...LOL["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

Yes! The Rook was fantastic, I loved Myfanwy too. At first I was disappointed that Stiletto didn’t continue her story, but I was sucked in pretty quickly anyway. I would definitely recommend giving it another shot. Hope it works better for you the second time around :)

My pick for Part of a Series is Broken Soul (JY #8) by Faith Hunter; shelved 5x, 329 pgs.

Week 3 Part of Series
Book Perfection
Author R.L. Mathewson
Date Read Mar 22
Shelved 10
Rating 5 stars
I love the Bradford men. They are so funny when it comes to their obsession with food. I did love Trevor however he could be a bit of an unknowing jerk. I say it that way because once he is called out on his inconsiderate behavior he does start to adjust it. Throughout most of the book he fights falling for his neighbor. He justifies why he is attracted to her and that he doesn’t want a relationship. At least he figures out he loves Zoe before it’s too late. He does o some extremely funny things in order to get Zoey to realize that he wants her and prevents her from leaving.

Review: Every book is better than the last. I freaking love JY. Soooo, sooooo many things happen in this one and I suspect that there are going to be some serious ramifications. The last 30% is so intense - my stomach was in knots the whole time! I can't imagine that Leo will let Jane's latest transgressions slide. I don't want to give away any spoilers but things we have been waiting for from the beginning come to fruition which was exciting and frustrating and exciting. Also, this is the book, along w/ the short story Off the Grid, that connects us to the Soulwood series. (I just love Nell!) Dark Heir is next & I need to start it right now! I have to know what happens next!

Warm Bodies
Rating: ★★★

Final Thoughts:
I liked it. Mostly. I don't know why but I thought it was going to be funnier than it actually was. I wasn't a big fan of Perry's presence in the last third of the book. Once his brain was gone so should he have been. All his memories and pop ups seemed to have taken over the last portion. But other than that it was pretty good

Wasn't this one made in to a movie? I seem to remember seeing a movie by this name.

Yes! My memory is not completely full of holes then LOL. As I recall, the movie was pretty cute, for zombies anyway. LOL

Week 3: Part of a Series
Book: Hello Stranger
Author: Lisa Kleypas
Date Finished: 3/23/18

Review:
Lisa Kleypas has an amazing talent, especially for writing wonderful historical romances. In this one, I adored the heroine. She's the only female dr in England, and she's brilliant. She's the perfect match for the dark, but lonely, hero. I loved the depth of their connection and the way they kept each other honest. I can't wait for the next book to come out, I have no doubt it's going to be another 5 star read.

Also, if someone else wants to find a tag for us to do next Tuesday, please feel free.
Now, the questions:
The Labyrinth Book Tag
1. Sarah: A character that found strength without a love interest.
2. Hoggle: A character you weren’t sure whether to love or hate at first.
3. Ludo: A character almost too innocent to be real.
4. Didymus: A clueless character you either love or hate.
5. Jareth: A villain you can’t help but love.
6. Fire Dancers: What secondary character really got on your nerves?
7. The Labyrinth: A book with plot twists you never saw coming.
8. The Bog of Eternal Stench: What trope or writing style that will immediately make you put down a book?
9. The Oubliette: What book or series you will never finish?
10. The 13th Hour: What book kept you up all night or did you read in one day/sitting?
11. Crystal Balls: What book do you wish the main character had a crystal ball so they could avoid miscommunications?
12. You Have No Power Over Me: What book or series didn’t you understand the hype for?
13. Dance Magic Dance: A book that will always make you happy.

1. Sarah: A character that found strength without a love interest.
I had a bunch of ideas pop into my head and then I realized that they were all middle-grade book characters. I wanted to pick one that's more in line w/ this group so, I'm going with Meg from The Others Series by Anne Bishop. She is definitely not interested in love at the beginning of the series but she does find the strength and will to survive after escaping the compound.

2. Hoggle: A character you weren’t sure whether to love or hate at first.
Rick LaFleur in Jane Yellowrock - I could tell that I was supposed to love him but I just thought he was a douchebag. On the flipside, I like him just fine in the Soulwood series. He makes a good and competent boss. Just not a fan of him as relationship material and I felt that way about him long before JY book 7.

3. Ludo: A character almost too innocent to be real.
Simi fom the Chronicles of Nick & The Dark Hunter Universe by Sherrilyn Kenyon. All she needs is a bottle of bbq sauce to be happy.

4. Didymus: A clueless character you either love or hate.
♥♥ Oberon ♥♥ from The Iron Druid Chronicles is so sweetly clueless. It doesn't matter if he's running for his life, as long as he has sausages he's completely content. Throwing in an occasional poodle sure doesn't hurt either.

5. Jareth: A villain you can’t help but love.
Mr. Wednesday from American Gods. He's so crooked but I just love him!

6. Fire Dancers: What secondary character really got on your nerves?
Hands down, Donavan Caine from Elemental Assassin. He is literally the worst.

7. The Labyrinth: A book with plot twists you never saw coming.
I know that it's totally overhyped now but when I read Gone Girl for the first time I was totally freaking out. I can remember listening to the audiobook at work, gasping and totally stressing out over what was going on in the story. There were four of us reading/listening together and I would have to log out of my workstation to talk to one of the other girls because I just couldn't believe what was happening. I don't think I've read anything since that has affected me while I was reading it as strongly as this one did.

8. The Bog of Eternal Stench: What trope or writing style that will immediately make you put down a book?
I really hate when women are bitchy in books. I'm not talking about snark & sass - I love the sarcastic sense of humor that so many heroines seem to have. To me, bitchy is intentionally malicious. It's just unnecessessary. I'm looking at you, Big Little Lies.

9. The Oubliette: What book or series you will never finish?
My baby sister is ging to kill me for saying this but anything Cassandra Clare/Shadow Hunter related is totally off the table for me. I really enjoyed the time I spent reading this series with my sister but nope. Not gonna finish that.

10. The 13th Hour: What book kept you up all night or did you read in one day/sitting?
Most recently was Broken Soul (JY#8).

11. Crystal Balls: What book do you wish the main character had a crystal ball so they could avoid miscommunications?
Definitely Chess from Downside Ghosts. She's such a mess but I love her anyway.

12. You Have No Power Over Me: What book or series didn’t you understand the hype for?
This one has been a long standing head scratcher for me ... On the Road by Jack Keroac. I have DNF'd this book probably 15x b/c I hate it. I know I should have read it in my teens when maybe it could have meant something about being young, wild, and free to me but I read it too late and I've experienced too much to ever be okay with the behavior/attitudes in this book.

13. Dance Magic Dance: A book that will always make you happy.
Like a hole in the Head by Jen Branbury. It was the first time that I had ever read something so crazy and just for the sheer adventure.

She really is. I had no idea about the original inspiration for Garrett until I read the afterword that Lisa included. Pretty amazing.
