When I'm not writing, I'm psychologizing (really, I even get a paycheck for it). Sometimes I do both at the same time. The results are unpredictable.

Currently there are three books slated for release (Reliquary on June 14th, Splinter on August 2nd, and Mosaic on November 15th), but I do not consider that the end of the story. Jim is definitely a character whose fate I left somewhat vague, but I will tell you how I've always thought about it:

SPOILER AHEAD: At the end of Fractured, I felt that Jim wasn't yet finished with his journey toward redemption, and that it would be too easy to give him a happily ever after at that point--and if you've read the short story about him in Stories from the Shadowlands, you can probably see why. So after his death at the end of Fractured, he would have needed to do his time in the Blinding City, and he would have ultimately succeeded using some of the inner resources he'd gained during the time he spent in the land of the living. Ultimately, I do think he would have ended up back in the Countryside, but with more of a sense of peace and contentment for having experienced all the things he had.

I hope that answers your question!(less)

CHAOS is out: The end of Guards of the Shadowlands

Today, my 5th novel is out. Chaos is the third and final book in the Guards of the Shadowlands series.

This is bittersweet for me. It was hard to say goodbye to these characters, but I'm proud of their journeys and I hope this final book resonates with readers in the same way the first two did. Here's the blurb, which is somewhat spoilery about the end of Fractured:

“Some people can’t keep fighting. Some people want to escape. Some people are not ready—are not able—to find a way to deal with what’s in front of them. Sometimes there’s no one to help them. Sometimes they don’t know how to ask for help. Sometimes it feels like there’s no choice but to end it. No other way out. And sometimes it’s impossible to see past that.”

“He kissed me gently. 'Lieutenant Malachi Sokol, reporting for duty, Captain.'
'What?'
'I've been assigned to your field unit,' he whispered as he nuzzled my neck. Oh, man. Heaven. Help. Me. 'I'm afraid I'm already being shockingly insubordinate.”
