Shauna Oh the irony of complaining that teenagers are people and have a right to their opinions. What exactly do you think Anne Frank was?

Laura Herzlos Esther, I know that the "stay away" wasn't meant as "piss off". But it was like saying a bullied kid not to go to that park anymore, because the mean kids will always be there. True as it may be, it's not a solution.

I would love you to elaborate a reductio ad absurdum with a rant, especially considering that I haven't made any hypothesis. Since this is still a thread about a book, I would strongly recommend that you do that someplace else.

Laura Herzlos Shauna wrote: "Oh the irony of complaining that teenagers are people and have a right to their opinions. What exactly do you think Anne Frank was?"

And what does that anything to do with it? Did anyone insult Anne here? Did anyone say Anne Frank was a fake or a bot? Did anyone call her a bratty kid in this thread?

No, Laura, that's only sound, practical advice from over a decade of running a large dog board (breaking up a real dog fight is a piece of cake compared to that sometimes) — and being on other boards, and having a grasp of human nature.

I don't like it, but that's how it is. Not everyone plays well with others. You can either set yourself up to be able to enjoy participating in something and let the nasties roll off your back (and nothing irritates them more than being ignored) or you can get your feelings hurt by jackasses who shouldn't matter.

And if you follow #1, it gives the jackasses less to work with and also negates the Troll label. Jaya's obviously not trolling, she just needed to consider her words more carefully so as not to appear that she was.

Whether Jaya is a kid or not, she definitely needs someone to offer her information that she can use in her own best interest, here and elsewhere she might go.

Think of that list as an internet version of gun safety rules. (Yeah, I know I'm gonna get flak for using the gun safety metaphor, but it's apt — aim carefully and be sure of your target before you shoot off your mouth, and try not to shoot yourself in the foot.)

Elisa Santos Jaya i, for one, am happy that you re-phrased your thoughts in a more understandable way, but still maintaining your opinions.

Mary I know bullying and cyberbullying are quite the buzzwords these days, but these threads are not guilty of bullying, not by a long shot. I think it diminishes the real instances of bullying when every disagreement or difference of opinion is labeled as bullying.

I have to ask Jaya a question though, why did you start this thread?
You had obviously read at least some of what was being said on Anamika's thread because you commented there. Then you purposely started your own thread using almost the same wording? You have since changed your wording and given intelligent answers to questions regarding your opinion, but why start this thread at all? You had to know some of Anamika's commenters would also bring their opinions to your thread? You cannot be surprised at the level of passion people have shown for this topic.

Anamika, you are purposely vague. You know it causes frustration and even anger towards you. In the time I first saw your thread I have...Spent a week in Colorado and climbed Pikes Peak, spent 3 days climbing Mt. Whitney, took care of my niece and nephew for a week, organized my classroom, cleaned, cooked, shopped, written on other posts, read 4 books and basically lived a very full life. And yet somehow found the time to respond to your posts here, in more than one sentence. I would guess so many others on this site have equally full and busy lives, so when you say you are too busy, we scoff a little and think you are being purposely evasive.

Dusty Bibliophile Jaya, I can appreciate changing the thread title so it doesn't generate the instant emotional passion that has been displayed. But isn't "just didn't find it as intresting or intriguing, but her writing structure was good and the idea of her story lasting till this day is remarkable." a bit much?

Dusty Bibliophile Jaya wrote: "Dusty Bibliophile wrote: "Why change the thread title, Jaya? I see you added "a little" to the end of the title."<

I don't think you can delete threads once they've been created. One of the things I've learned is just assume that once you post something to the world wild webs that it's going to exist forever.

Maybe asking a gr mod to lock the thread would suffice to achieve the purpose you are after.

Laura Herzlos Mary, I don't even remember if you, personally, were aggressive, insulting or whatever, but others have (including Godwin's law). I see that Jaya decided to change her wording and part of her opinion before it got uglier. So probably you're right to say that there wasn't any actual bullying in this thread, but there certainly was "much less elegant" stuff on the other.

As I keep saying, there are many civilized ways of expressing disagreements, differences of opinion, passion and even frustration. I'm glad to see that things have calmed down, in any case.

Paul Martin but there certainly was "much less elegant" stuff on the other.

And jolly good that is. Life isn't elegant, for most of us.

Tytti You can delete a thread you have made in a group. I would guess it works the same way here, too.

And yes, if you think disagreeing with you and writing negative comments/opinions is bullying, then you better stay out of the internet. That also does make you sound like a spoiled brat.

Hey, don't underestimate this Jaya person (or if it's a 'Bot, whoever deployed it).

At first I thought it was just thread mitosis, but the other thread experienced Godwin implosion soon after this one was created! Friguratively speaking, Jaya (inadvertently?) created a quantum well into which the occupants of the frozen thread were able to transition instantly! It's almost as if s/he/it *sensed* that the Godwin threshold had been reached, and created an "escape hatch"... (Or Something, and Stuff Like That.)

Laura Herzlos Tytti wrote: "if you think disagreeing with you and writing negative comments/opinions is bullying, then you better stay out of the internet"

If you're unable to recognize the difference between a negative opinion and an insult, nothing can be done for you.

Tytti Laura wrote: "If you're unable to recognize the difference between a negative opinion and an insult, nothing can be done for you."

Well, IMO you are the one doing most of the insulting. Besides, likening this thread to cyberbullying is almost an insult to the real victims of cyberbullies. If you say something stupid, you can except to be call out for it.

Laura Herzlos Tytti wrote: "Well, IMO you are the one doing most of the insulting."

You are hilarious. Show me an insult I wrote, I dare you. Hey, we can exchange if you want.

Tytti wrote: "If you say something stupid, you can except to be call out for it."

You can except so much.

Tytti I don't bother reading your rants, they are unnecessarily aggressive and don't add anything to the discussion. You seem to have something against people who don't care to sugarcoat their opinions.

"A bunch of self-righteous adults", like those who start policing a thread and decide what can be said according to their own rules?

Laura Herzlos Tytti wrote: ""A bunch of self-righteous adults", like those who start policing a thread and decide what can be said according to their own rules?"

Exactly, those. Just like you. Because nobody can say that they dislike/hate/whatever this book, according to your own rules.

Tytti Laura wrote: "Because nobody can say that they dislike/hate/whatever this book, according to your own rules."

No, they can. I just think it's stupid if they can't argue it convincingly. And most arguments won't hold water because this isn't a fictional novel. But according to you, I have no right to call those arguments stupid.

Tytti Anamika wrote: "There are times when people cannot express themselves properly.I think it is stupid when people take advantage of that and lash out."

Maybe it's time they learn to do that then, especially if English is your native language. We used to learn that in school.

Laura Herzlos Tytti wrote: " But according to you, I have no right to call those arguments stupid. "

I never said that. In fact, I said the exact opposite. I also have the right of expressing what I think of what you say. And we have both used our rights, very much.

Tytti Anamika wrote: "It isn't the language that's the problem. It's something else."

And here we go again. Well if you can't express yourself properly, maybe you should stay quiet and rewrite your piece as long as it's necessary to express yourself properly.

message 73: by Tytti (last edited Jul 27, 2014 06:06AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Tytti I see no reason to "express an opinion" when in fact it's not even your opinion that you want to express but something else. This isn't school or work, no one has ask you for your opinion in the first place.

Renee E 'You should learn not to make personal remarks,' Alice said with some severity; 'it's very rude.'

The Hatter opened his eyes very wide on hearing this; but all he said was, 'Why is a raven like a writing-desk?'

'Come, we shall have some fun now!' thought Alice. 'I'm glad they've begun asking riddles. — I believe I can guess that,' she added aloud.

'Do you mean that you think you can find out the answer to it?' said the March Hare.

'Exactly so,' said Alice.

'Then you should say what you mean,' the March Hare went on.

'I do,' Alice hastily replied; 'at least — at least I mean what I say — that's the same thing, you know.'

'Not the same thing a bit!' said the Hatter. 'You might just as well say that "I see what I eat" is the same thing as "I eat what I see"!'

'You might just as well say,' added the March Hare, 'that "I like what I get" is the same thing as "I get what I like"!'

'You might just as well say,' added the Dormouse, who seemed to be talking in his sleep, 'that "I breathe when I sleep" is the same thing as "I sleep when I breathe"!'

'It is the same thing with you,' said the Hatter, and here the conversation dropped, and the party sat silent for a minute, while Alice thought over all she could remember about ravens and writing-desks, which wasn't much.

Thank you, Lewis Carroll. I've often said that I've never found myself in a situation where something from Wonderland or Through the Looking Glass did not apply.

Kelsey Hanson I feel like it's worth mentioning that this is not a "book" that was intended for publish, but someone's diary. That being said it has all the thoughts of a teenage girl which are not always groundbreaking. Most people don't read this book because it's a good story with lots of action but to remember an exceptionally dark period of history and connect historical facts to a human element.

Petergiaquinta And thank you, Renee...this is the perfect moment to let the thread die a merciful death so Jaya and Anamika can continue their little tea party without intrusion from rational, thoughtful interlopers.

Sara Testarossa I don't know why I keep coming back to these threads. Morbid curiosity, I guess. It would be lovely if people would stop being rude to each other though. But given it's the internet, that's not extremely likely to happen. Sigh.

WAIDaminnit... Just because I obliquely and indirectly alluded to the possibility that "Jaya" might be a 'Bot? Why couldn't that actually be a *compliment", to the programmer??

Remember when someone said that it was so annoying that I kept repeating the same thing over and over? Your "witty" comments about bots and programmers may easily march through the same road, you know. :D

Damn... you know, you're right (I HATE when that happens). I probably can't get any more traction with that (although you'd THINK they'd at LEAST be worried about the NSA angle...).

But, that notwithsatanding, I was *merely* trying to find out why the Amanita thought I'd insulted somebody. Oh well...

Laura Herzlos Hum... because you did.

Duane Laura wrote: "Hum... because you did."

Huh? I did because I did?

Laura Herzlos Duane wrote: "I was *merely* trying to find out why the Amanita thought I'd insulted somebody. "

Laura wrote: "Hum... because you did." (and you know it)

I see that you're trying to be witty and funny with your "oh, whoever programmed this bot is awesome" and your intentional misspelling of her name (because you strike me as smart enough to be able to read). That, or you're just trying to get attention. Or both. My comment (I wouldn't call it an accusation, because that's not a crime) was that some jokes become dull after you repeat them too much.

Duane Anamika wrote: "It's A-N-A-M-I-K-A!Besides I didn't specify that it was your comment that was insulting. It wasn't directed to you."

well, your post turned up right under mine so I thought a knee-jerk reaction was in order, but apparently not... oh well... better luck next time

Laura wrote: "I see that you're trying to be witty and ..."

This is hopeless... I can see that my ADMITTEDLY overused attempts at what APPEARS to be humor, have gotten hopelessly convoluted with my FRUITLESS attempts at scurrilous evasive Talmudic reasoning, thereby rendering the latter inaccessable for teenage consumption. Further "oh well"... << grumble... Fume... >>

The Anamika.exe (thanks 4 that 1 Paul!) has spawned another process (sorry Laura, it's like eating peanuts; I don't know how to quit once I get started) over here doing more "Research" on "Tequila Mockingbird", if anyone cares (It's the "thread.Like" method instead of the "thread.Hate" this time) (Last one in is a lame-ass threadnik!)
